Call of Duty: WWII has a solo Campaign and advertised local multiplayer and co-op features, but official sources do not confirm that every mode will launch and work with the internet fully disconnected. Install and update the game while online, then test the exact mode on your platform before relying on it during a trip or outage. Activision’s support page says the game requires a “constant, stable internet connection,” but that page addresses connecting to an online game rather than documenting every offline mode.
What “offline” means in Call of Duty: WWII
Offline can mean three different things: playing alone, playing with people in the same room, or playing with no internet connection at all. These are not interchangeable. A mode listed as local or split-screen describes a way to play together; by itself, that label does not guarantee the game will launch when the console or PC is disconnected.

- Solo play: The Campaign is the natural choice for a single player. The official material reviewed does not make a platform-by-platform guarantee that it works fully disconnected after a fresh install.
- Local play: Xbox advertises local multiplayer and local co-op. Those are same-console capabilities, but the listing does not specify every network prerequisite.
- Online play: Online Multiplayer and online co-op require connectivity. Activision’s connection troubleshooting page is specifically about joining an online game.
Activision Support’s page, updated November 21, 2019, states: “Call of Duty: WWII requires a constant, stable internet connection to play.” Read that wording in the context of its title, “Connecting to a Call of Duty: WWII Game,” and its online connection troubleshooting. It is not a detailed declaration of which individual modes work with all internet access removed: Activision’s connection guidance.
What each mode offers—and what is known about offline use
Campaign
Activision describes the Campaign as following a recruit in the U.S. First Infantry Division, beginning on D-Day and continuing across European battle locations. It is the obvious mode to consider for solo play, but the official sources reviewed do not confirm offline launch behavior for every platform and edition. Treat Campaign availability while fully disconnected as something to verify on your own installation, not a universal guarantee. Activision’s Call of Duty: WWII overview.

Local Multiplayer and split-screen
The Xbox product listing advertises local multiplayer for 2 players and shared/split screen. It separately lists online multiplayer for 2–18 players. These are feature listings, not a full guide to disconnected setup; they do not establish that every local match option, such as bots or a particular ruleset, is available offline. Xbox’s Call of Duty: WWII listing.
Nazi Zombies and co-op
Activision presents Nazi Zombies as a cooperative mode. Xbox lists local co-op for 2–4 players as well as online co-op for 2–4 players. That supports the availability of advertised local co-op on Xbox, but not a guarantee that Zombies will run with the system entirely disconnected across all platforms, editions, and account states. If local Zombies is the reason you want the game, test it before you depend on offline access. Activision’s game overview; Xbox’s feature listing.

- Land in Normandy on D-Day and battle across Europe through iconic locations in history’s most monumental war
- Experience classic Call of Duty combat, the bonds of camaraderie, and the unforgiving nature of war against a global power throwing the world into tyranny
Online Multiplayer and co-op
Online matches and online co-op are network play, not offline alternatives. Xbox distinguishes them from the local features in its listing, and Activision’s connection article covers issues connecting to an online game. Do not infer from the available sources that a console subscription is required for Campaign or local play; the reviewed material does not establish that requirement.
Platform differences that matter
| Platform | What the official listing establishes | What it does not settle |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | Xbox advertises local co-op for 2–4 players, local multiplayer for 2 players, shared/split screen, and online options. | Whether each mode launches and runs with all internet access removed in every setup. |
| PlayStation 4 | Activision lists PlayStation among the supported platforms and provides platform support material. | A complete offline-mode matrix or exact subscription requirements. |
| PC / Steam | Steam lists broadband internet as a minimum requirement and 90 GB of available storage. | Whether an installed Campaign or another mode will launch fully disconnected. A listed requirement should not be treated as proof about every installed mode’s behavior. |
Xbox’s player counts are product capability figures, not a measure of offline reliability. Do not assume Xbox’s advertised local features apply identically to PlayStation or PC. Steam’s Call of Duty: WWII listing; Activision Support.

Prepare and test before going offline
- Install while connected. Download the game and allow installation to finish before trying to launch it. Activision’s support index includes an Installation and Setup Essentials guide; installation completion is a prerequisite, not a guarantee of offline access. Activision Support index.
- Apply available updates. Do this while internet access is available so you are not left needing a download when disconnected.
- Test the intended mode on the actual device. With your console or PC in the offline condition you expect to use, launch the game and enter Campaign, local Multiplayer, or local Zombies as appropriate. A successful online launch does not verify offline behavior.
- Check the specific platform and edition. The official information does not establish that offline behavior is identical across platforms, editions, or account states.
- Do not rely on a feature label alone. “Local” and “split-screen” describe play arrangements, not a universal promise of no-network operation.
If the game crashes
Activision says a Campaign crash should resume from the last save or checkpoint. A crash during Multiplayer or Zombies typically returns the player to the dashboard. This is recovery guidance, not evidence that a mode is available offline. Activision’s Call of Duty: WWII crash guidance.
