Can You Play Cloud Games With a Controller, Keyboard, and Mouse?

Cloud games can work with controllers, keyboard and mouse, or touch controls—but support depends on the service, device, and game. Here’s how to check before you play or buy an accessory.

Yes—but support depends on the cloud gaming service, the device you use to play, and the game itself. Controllers are the safest choice for console-style cloud gaming. Keyboard and mouse work for some games on computers, but support on TVs and phones is more limited. Before buying an accessory, check whether the specific game supports your preferred input on your particular device; being able to use a keyboard to navigate an app does not necessarily mean you can play a game with it.

What input devices work with cloud gaming?

Cloud gaming sends a game from a remote computer or console to your screen, while your inputs travel back to the game. That does not make every connected device compatible. The service, client device, operating system, browser, and individual game can all affect whether a controller, keyboard, mouse, or touch controls work during play.

It helps to separate three kinds of support:

  • App navigation: An input device can move through menus or select a game without being accepted once gameplay starts.
  • Gameplay: The game and service recognize the device as a way to control the character or action.
  • Device compatibility: The device, connection method, operating system, and sometimes browser permissions or drivers allow the input to work correctly.

For example, NVIDIA says a physical keyboard and mouse can navigate GeForce NOW on a TV, but a supported gamepad is required to play games on TVs. That distinction is important: seeing a cursor or entering text in an app is not proof that keyboard-and-mouse gameplay is supported.

How do the major cloud gaming services handle input?

The practical answer varies by service and client. The table summarizes the official guidance for GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Amazon Luna; it does not mean every game on a service supports every listed input.

Service Controller guidance Keyboard-and-mouse guidance Important device or game caveat
GeForce NOW NVIDIA lists supported gamepads for computer platforms, including Microsoft Xbox and Sony DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers. Other gamepads may work, sometimes with drivers or software updates. NVIDIA lists the SHIELD controller for SHIELD TV and has separate controller guidance for Android and iOS. NVIDIA recommends USB gaming mice for computer platforms. On TVs, a physical keyboard and mouse are for app navigation only; gameplay requires a supported gamepad. Check the requirements for the exact client device. Phone play may benefit from a gamepad clip, which NVIDIA recommends for attaching a controller to a phone.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Xbox’s setup instructions say to connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB. Selected games support touch controls. The general getting-started guidance does not establish keyboard-and-mouse gameplay as a service-wide option. Check the particular game and client rather than assuming it works. Cloud play depends on supported regions, devices, games, and subscription eligibility or free-to-play eligibility. Fortnite on mobile does not support mouse and keyboard, including when played through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Amazon Luna Amazon names Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Razer Kishi controllers as compatible examples. Exact controller support varies by device category. Amazon lists mouse and keyboard support for Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. Most Luna games need either a controller or mouse and keyboard; GameNight titles can use a phone as a controller. Controller compatibility differs across Fire TV and tablets, Samsung TVs, LG TVs, computers, and mobile devices. Some browsers require permission for keyboard and mouse input, and third-party controllers may need drivers.

When should you use a controller?

A controller is the most reliable starting point when playing a console-style game through the cloud, especially on a TV. Xbox Cloud Gaming’s current setup guidance calls for a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB, while NVIDIA requires a supported gamepad for GeForce NOW gameplay on TVs. Luna also lists supported controllers across several device categories.

Choose a controller for TV play

For GeForce NOW on a TV, choose a gamepad listed for the specific TV or streaming device rather than relying on a keyboard and mouse. A keyboard and mouse may still be useful for navigating the app, but NVIDIA explicitly distinguishes that from playing games. Xbox and Amazon also organize compatibility by device, so a controller that works with one client should not automatically be assumed to work with another.

Check the connection and exact model

Xbox’s setup instructions describe Bluetooth or USB connections for a compatible controller. NVIDIA lists Xbox and PlayStation controllers among supported computer-platform options and warns that additional gamepads may need drivers or software updates. Amazon gives examples of compatible controller families but cautions that third-party controllers may need drivers and that some features may not be available on other compatible controllers.

Before purchasing, find the compatibility entry for the service and the device you intend to use. If you are playing on a computer, phone, TV, or streaming device, look for the relevant client section; support lists are not interchangeable.

When do keyboard and mouse work?

Keyboard and mouse are a viable option for some cloud games, particularly on computers. Amazon Luna explicitly lists the pair for Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. NVIDIA recommends a USB gaming mouse for computer platforms, though whether a game accepts it is still a game-specific question. A supported computer setup does not imply the same input will work on a TV or phone.

GeForce NOW on a computer versus a TV

On computer platforms, NVIDIA includes USB gaming mice in its requirements and lists supported gamepads separately. On TVs, its rule is unambiguous: “You can only use a physical keyboard and mouse to navigate the app. You must use a supported gamepad to play games on TVs.” If you want mouse-and-keyboard gameplay, do not buy a mouse on the assumption that it will enable play through a TV client.

If a mouse stutters while using GeForce NOW, NVIDIA suggests trying a lower polling rate of 125 Hz. Treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a universal best setting: it is one adjustment to try if the problem occurs, not a required setting for every mouse or game.

Amazon Luna on supported computers

Luna’s compatibility information lists mouse and keyboard for Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. Some browsers may ask for permission to use keyboard and mouse input; Amazon says to allow that permission when Chrome requests it. If input does not work, check browser permissions before concluding that the game or service lacks support.

Do not assume computer support carries over

A keyboard that works with a computer client may only navigate menus on a TV client, and mobile support has its own limits. For example, Epic says mouse and keyboard cannot be used with Fortnite on mobile devices, including when Fortnite is accessed through Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna. This is a rule for Fortnite on mobile—not a blanket statement about every game or every client offered by those services.

Can you play cloud games on a phone?

Sometimes, but phone input support is not simply the same as computer support on a smaller screen. Each service has device-specific compatibility information. NVIDIA lists supported controllers for its Android and iOS clients and recommends a gamepad clip for attaching a controller to a phone. Xbox lists Apple and Android mobile devices among supported device categories and describes compatible-controller setup; selected games instead support touch controls. Luna’s controller compatibility also varies by device category.

For a specific mobile game, check both the service’s phone requirements and the game’s input rules. Fortnite illustrates why: Epic’s stated mobile limitation applies even when the game is streamed through the named cloud services. Do not infer from that one title that all mobile cloud games reject a controller, or that computer keyboard-and-mouse support applies on a phone.

  1. Identify the exact setup. Write down the service, the device you will play on (such as a Windows PC, phone, or TV), and the game. “Cloud gaming” by itself is not specific enough to establish compatibility.
  2. Check the service’s requirements for that device. Read the relevant platform section, not just a general list of supported devices. Look for whether the input is for gameplay or app navigation.
  3. Check the game’s input options. Service-level compatibility does not guarantee that an individual game accepts a controller, keyboard and mouse, or touch controls.
  4. Match the controller and connection. Confirm that the model or controller family is supported for the intended client. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB as directed by Xbox.
  5. Allow requested browser permissions. On Luna, a browser may require permission for keyboard and mouse input. Allow the request when Chrome asks, then test again.
  6. Check drivers or updates if a controller is not recognized. Amazon cautions that some third-party controllers may need drivers; NVIDIA says some additional gamepads may require drivers or software updates.
  7. Test in the game, not only the app. Confirm that the device controls gameplay. Menu navigation alone does not establish in-game support.

What should you buy for your setup?

Choose an accessory only after confirming the service, device, and game support it. A USB gaming mouse is a sensible category to consider for supported computer games: NVIDIA specifically recommends USB gaming mice for GeForce NOW computer platforms, and Luna lists keyboard and mouse for Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. That does not make a mouse useful for GeForce NOW gameplay on a TV, nor does it override a game’s own input restrictions.

A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is the more broadly useful choice for console-style cloud play. Xbox requires a compatible controller in its setup guidance, and NVIDIA and Amazon publish controller compatibility information. Select a model against the precise client you plan to use; a controller is not guaranteed to work across all services and devices just because it works with one.

For handheld GeForce NOW play, NVIDIA recommends a gamepad clip to attach a controller to a phone. It is an optional mounting accessory, not a substitute for checking controller support on the phone client. No specific controller or mouse model is established as tested here.

Common compatibility problems and what to try

  • The keyboard works in menus but not in the game: This may be an app-navigation-only setup, as on GeForce NOW TVs. Check the service’s gameplay requirements and the game’s supported inputs.
  • A controller is not detected: Verify that its model is supported for the exact device, use a connection method supported by the service, and check for any driver or software update requirement.
  • Keyboard and mouse do not work in a browser: Check whether the browser requested input permission. Amazon specifically notes that some browsers require permission; allow the prompt when Chrome asks.
  • A mouse stutters on GeForce NOW: NVIDIA suggests trying a 125 Hz polling rate as a troubleshooting adjustment.
  • Mouse and keyboard fail on mobile Fortnite: Epic says those inputs cannot be used for Fortnite on mobile, including through the named cloud gaming services. Changing the cloud provider does not remove that game-and-device limitation.

Xbox Cloud Gaming has additional eligibility requirements

Input compatibility is only one part of getting into a cloud game. Xbox says availability depends on supported regions, devices, games, and subscription eligibility; its guidance also recognizes free-to-play eligibility. It names Windows PCs, Apple and Android mobile devices, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest headsets as supported device categories. When playing on xbox.com, a supported browser is also part of the setup. Check Xbox’s current requirements for the specific device and game, because the general category list does not establish availability for every location or title.

Bottom line: match the input to the client and game

Use a supported controller as the default for cloud gaming on a TV or when the service’s setup requires one. Consider keyboard and mouse for a supported computer setup, especially where the service lists them for that platform. For phones and other devices, use the client-specific support information and check the game’s own rules. The decisive question is not simply whether a cloud service can recognize an input device; it is whether that device can control the particular game on the device where you plan to play.
