What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. You can play a relaxed zombie-survival session with friends, but the experience depends heavily on the game and its settings. State of Decay 2 offers a clear online co-op loop for two to four players: one person hosts a survivor community while the others join to scavenge, fight hordes and defend the settlement. Project Zomboid also supports multiplayer, but gives the group much more control over the tone, from the punishing Apocalypse preset to the slower, cozier Rising mode. If you are starting a long-running Project Zomboid world, confirm that every player and the server are using the same Build 42 branch and version.
What “cozy zombie survival” means in multiplayer
Cozy zombie survival does not mean that the undead are harmless. It usually means the group can spend more time gathering supplies, decorating a safe base, farming, exploring and talking than reacting to relentless attacks. A good co-op game lets you set the pressure to match the group: new players may want generous loot and slower zombie behavior, while experienced players may prefer scarce resources and permanent consequences.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- How many people can join one session?
- Whose world or survivor community persists between sessions?
- What can a joining player do, and how much control does the host retain?
- Can the group adjust loot, zombies and other survival rules?
- Does the game provide a ready-made co-op loop or require server administration?
On those criteria, State of Decay 2 is the easier recommendation for a group that wants to start playing quickly. Project Zomboid is the stronger choice when the group wants to design its own version of the apocalypse.

State of Decay 2: straightforward two-to-four-player co-op
How many players can join?
The current Xbox product listing for State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition labels online co-op as 2–4 players. The official Undead Labs game page describes four-player co-op in which friends join one another’s communities. In practical terms, one host runs a survivor community and can play with up to three friends.
| Feature | What is established |
|---|---|
| Online group size | 2–4 players on the current Xbox listing; up to four players in the Undead Labs description. |
| Basic structure | Friends join the host’s survivor community. |
| Shared activities | Scavenging resources, fighting hordes and helping stabilize the community when events become chaotic. |
| Host role | The host supplies the community and the active world for that session. |
What you do together
The co-op loop is immediately legible. The host brings friends into an existing survivor community, then the group divides practical jobs: one player searches buildings for food or materials, another carries medical supplies, and others escort the group or clear a route through a horde. The official description specifically frames co-op around scavenging, fighting hordes and steadying the chaos as the settlement comes under pressure.
This structure suits a relaxed evening because nobody has to learn a server configuration before the first supply run. The tension comes from deciding how far to travel, which survivor to risk and whether the team can return before the next crisis—not from configuring dozens of simulation variables.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Enable multiplayer. Confirm multiplayer is turned on in the game’s multiplayer controls before inviting anyone.
- Choose the host. The host loads the survivor community that the group will use for the session.
- Invite or signal for help. The host can send an SOS, while other players can join available communities.
- Assign a practical job. Decide who is carrying supplies, who is driving or scouting and who is responsible for protecting the group.
- Use the specialist entry points when appropriate. The support documentation also lists volunteering for Daybreak or entering Heartland multiplayer, so those modes are separate options from the ordinary community session.
Menu wording can vary by platform and update. If an invitation does not appear, return to the multiplayer controls and verify that the host has enabled multiplayer before sending another request.
World persistence and player agency
The host-community model makes the ownership question simple: the host’s survivor community is the anchor for the session. Joining players help that community, but they are not independently carrying the whole campaign in a separate persistent world. That makes State of Decay 2 easy to organize—everyone knows whose save to load—but the host should be the person who can play regularly and keep the community available.
The exact limits of a visiting player’s long-term progression are a practical consideration rather than a separately stated player-count specification. Treat the host’s community as the group’s shared home, and agree in advance whose save will be used for scheduled sessions.

Is Project Zomboid multiplayer?
Yes. Project Zomboid supports multiplayer through servers, and its Build 42 feature overview describes a more capable server browser. You can show or hide modded, full or empty servers and sort results by ping or player count. That gives a group two ways to play: find a suitable public server or use a server configured for your own friends.

Why it can feel cozier
Project Zomboid exposes more of the survival simulation to the group. The documented modes range from the hard-edged Apocalypse preset to a cozier Rising mode. Loot and zombie behavior can be adjusted, so the host can reduce the pressure without removing the parts that make a shared survival story interesting.
For a relaxed first session, the group might choose Rising, increase the availability of essential supplies and use less aggressive zombie behavior. A group that wants a harsher campaign can move toward Apocalypse, where every supply run and injury carries more weight. The important point is that “cozy” is a configuration choice here, not a fixed genre label.
Finding or joining a server
- Agree on the rules first. Decide whether the group wants a public server, a private friend-only server, mods or an unmodded game.
- Open the server browser. Use its filters to show or hide modded, full and empty servers.
- Sort for the session you want. Sort by player count when you need room for the group, or by ping when responsiveness matters most.
- Match the server configuration. Every player should use the same game branch and compatible mod list as the server.
- Test with a short session. Before investing in a permanent base, have everyone connect, sleep or log out as intended and confirm that the server retains the characters and settings correctly.
The browser’s filters are especially useful for a cozy group: an empty server may offer room for friends, while a full server can prevent a late-arriving player from joining. Sorting by ping helps avoid a technically successful connection that feels unpleasant to play.
Build 42 version awareness
Build 42.20 is listed as a live Project Zomboid release, and the developer says multiplayer and controller improvements will continue during Build 42 support. That means a long-running shared world deserves a version check before you begin.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Confirm whether everyone is on the same Build 42 branch.
- Check the server’s exact version before creating characters and storing supplies.
- Do not assume a branch switch will preserve a world, mods or controller behavior exactly as before.
- When a player cannot connect after an update, compare the server version, client branch and enabled mods before changing gameplay settings.
This is not a reason to avoid multiplayer. It is a scheduling precaution: establish the version at the start of a campaign and recheck it after a major update.
State of Decay 2 or Project Zomboid?
The following comparison combines documented features with editorial judgments about how those features affect a co-op group. Persistence and joining-player agency are useful ways to choose, but they are not additional official player-count specifications.
| Question | State of Decay 2 | Project Zomboid |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op size | Online co-op for 2–4 players; up to four in the official game description. | Multiplayer is supported; the practical group size depends on the selected server. |
| World or community anchor | The host’s survivor community anchors the session. | A server preserves the shared world and its configured rules. |
| Joining-player agency | Friends join the host’s community to help with its activities. | Players operate inside server rules that can be tuned, with more room for self-directed survival tasks. |
| Survival-management depth | Community management, scavenging, combat and defense provide a clear co-op loop. | Loot, zombie behavior and broader server settings can be adjusted across a wider survival simulation. |
| Relaxed-session option | The fixed co-op structure is approachable; the group manages difficulty through play and planning. | Rising mode and adjustable loot and zombie behavior provide an explicit cozier setup. |
| Best starting point | A group that wants to invite friends and begin a shared supply run quickly. | A group willing to choose server settings and maintain a shared world over time. |
Which game is cozier for your group?
Choose State of Decay 2 when simplicity matters
Pick State of Decay 2 if your group wants a defined objective each time it meets: load the host’s community, gather what the settlement needs, survive the trip and return before the situation deteriorates. Its 2–4-player online co-op listing removes uncertainty about the intended party size, and the host-community model keeps the session easy to coordinate.

Pick Project Zomboid if the group wants to decide how scarce supplies are, how active the zombies feel and whether the campaign should be punishing or forgiving. Rising mode is the natural starting point for a cozier tone, while the server browser helps you find a world with the right population and latency. Allow extra setup time for version, branch and mod checks.

Use a two-stage plan for mixed-experience groups
If some players are new to zombie survival games, begin with a low-pressure session rather than committing immediately to a permanent campaign. In State of Decay 2, that means a short hosted community run with clear jobs. In Project Zomboid, it means a Rising-oriented server with conservative settings and a test connection. After everyone understands the controls and the group’s preferred pace, raise the danger or start a longer world.
Practical ways to keep a co-op session relaxed
- Set a shared objective. A first-night food run, a rescue mission or securing one building gives the group direction without forcing a speedrun.
- Split responsibilities. Have one player watch supplies, another handle navigation and another cover the retreat. Clear jobs reduce arguments when the horde arrives.
- Use a stopping point. End after returning to base, storing supplies and confirming the next objective. This is particularly helpful for a host-owned community or a persistent server.
- Start without unnecessary complexity. Add mods or harsher settings only after the group has completed a stable session.
- Protect the campaign’s continuity. Record the host or server name, the selected branch and any important settings so everyone can reconnect next time.
Common co-op problems and fixes
A friend cannot see or join the session
In State of Decay 2, verify that the host enabled multiplayer and that the host is using the intended community. If the group is trying a special mode, confirm whether it is entering the ordinary community session, Daybreak or Heartland. In Project Zomboid, check that the server is not full, that it is visible under the current browser filters and that the player is using the matching branch and version.
The connection works but the game feels unstable
In Project Zomboid, sort or filter by ping and try a server with a more suitable connection. A high player count can also change the experience, so compare a quieter server with a crowded one. For either game, have the host restart the session only after everyone has safely returned to a known state; abrupt exits can make it harder to tell whether the problem is networking or saved-world state.

Check the game version before altering the world. Build 42.20 is current in the cited release notes, and multiplayer and controller work is still being improved during Build 42 support. Align the server and every client first, then test with a short connection before resuming a valuable long-running save.
Buying and platform checks
The named product is State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition. Before buying or linking to a store listing, verify the platform, region, current stock and online-service requirements shown for your edition. The Xbox listing cited for the co-op count is a current product page, so a different platform or edition may present different account, subscription or availability details.
For Project Zomboid, prioritize the server’s branch and version information over a generic multiplayer label. A compatible, reachable server is more important to a long campaign than simply owning the same game.
Verdict
Both games let you play zombie survival with friends, but they solve the problem differently. State of Decay 2 is the cleaner recommendation for immediate online co-op: two to four players share the host’s survivor community and work through scavenging, combat and defense together. Project Zomboid is the better fit when “cozy” means adjustable rules. Its multiplayer servers, Rising mode, configurable loot and zombie behavior let the group shape a slower shared apocalypse, provided everyone checks the Build 42 branch and server version before committing to the world.
