Bungie says Destiny 2 is unsupported on SteamOS and Proton, and warns that trying to bypass that restriction can result in a game ban.
What works—and what does not
Bungie’s Destiny 2 Steam Guide states: “Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running.” On SteamOS, Bungie says the game will return players to their library after a short time rather than let them enter the game.
That makes the distinction important: Windows on a Deck meets Bungie’s stated condition; launching the game through SteamOS/Proton does not. Bungie also says players who are not accessing the game through Windows and attempt to bypass the SteamOS/Proton incompatibility “will be met with a game ban.” Do not use compatibility workarounds to try to get around the block. Bungie’s account restriction policy provides additional context on restrictions and bans.

What to know before installing Windows
Valve provides Windows resources and drivers for Steam Deck, with instructions that vary by model. Check the guidance for your LCD or OLED Deck before starting. Valve says it cannot provide Windows compatibility support for Steam hardware, so installing Windows means taking on the setup and troubleshooting yourself.

Steam’s published PC requirements for Destiny 2 list Windows 10 64-bit, at least 6 GB of RAM, broadband internet, and 105 GB of available storage. These are the game’s listed requirements, not Deck-specific performance results or a guarantee of stability. Steam also states that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 support ended on June 4, 2024. Bungie’s Windows condition establishes the permitted local-play route; it does not promise a particular frame rate, battery life, or level of stability on the Deck. The published PC requirements are not Deck benchmarks, so there is not enough information here to make a reliable performance comparison. Treat Windows installation as a way to meet the game’s stated platform condition, not as a guarantee of a good handheld experience.

Which option should you choose?
- Keep SteamOS: Don’t launch Destiny 2 through Proton or try to bypass the incompatibility. Play on another supported platform instead.
- Play locally on the Deck: Install and run Windows, following Valve’s instructions for your specific model, and be prepared to manage Windows setup and support yourself.
- Stream from a PC: Consider Remote Play if you already have Destiny 2 running on another computer and want to stream it. This avoids installing Windows on the Deck, but it is not native Deck compatibility.
