Diablo III supports multiplayer co-op, including same-screen couch co-op on consoles and online play. Nintendo Switch also supports local wireless play across multiple systems. The exact options depend on the platform: don’t assume PC and console players can join the same party.
What multiplayer modes does Diablo III support?
On consoles, you can play locally on one screen or team up online. Nintendo Switch adds a third option: local wireless play across separate Switch systems. These are distinct ways to play, not a single universal multiplayer setup.

Same-screen couch co-op
Console editions support up to four players on one screen. On Switch, Nintendo’s Diablo III: Eternal Collection product page explicitly describes up to four local players sharing one Switch. For offline play on one Switch, each player needs a compatible controller.

Switch local wireless
Up to four Switch systems can connect for local multiplayer, so players can use separate consoles while playing nearby. This is different from sharing one screen; Nintendo lists both options for the Switch edition.

Online co-op
Console listings describe online multiplayer. The Xbox store listing says online multiplayer on console requires an eligible Game Pass membership. Nintendo notes that some features require an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; check the current store terms for your region and edition.
Can you play Diablo III with friends on different platforms?
Do not count on cross-platform parties. A 2014 report quoting lead designer Kevin Martens said cross-platform play was not possible at that time, but that is historical information rather than a current official compatibility matrix. The available current platform documentation does not establish that PC players can join console players. Plan to use the same platform family and compatible edition unless Blizzard’s current support documentation confirms otherwise.

Does multiplayer work offline?
Nintendo explicitly says Switch players can share one screen without an internet connection, provided each player has a compatible controller. That statement applies to local Switch play; it does not establish offline availability for every platform, mode, or Seasonal character.

For Seasons, Blizzard’s console Season guide says players should log in to PlayStation Network or Xbox Live to create a Seasonal character while a Season is active. This is specific to Seasonal character creation on consoles and is not a complete guide to every platform’s account or online requirements.

What to check before setting up a multiplayer session
- Choose the play style: one shared screen, online play, or—on Switch—local wireless across systems.
- Check the platform and edition: don’t assume players on different platform families can join one another.
- For offline Switch couch co-op: have one compatible controller for each player.
- For online console play: confirm the current platform membership requirement in your region.
- For Seasonal characters on console: account for the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live login requirement described in Blizzard’s Season guide.
What about PC?
The available official information here does not establish whether current PC versions support local couch co-op or spell out their current connection requirements. Console same-screen co-op details should not be applied to PC, and PC-to-console party compatibility is not established.
