It is a ready-to-play 60-card deck. It is not enough for a normal two-player head-to-head game by itself, because the opponent also needs a separate legal deck.
What one starter deck gives you
A starter deck is designed to remove the deck-building barrier for a new player. You can open the package, use the preconstructed list as your deck, and learn the game with the official quick-start rules. Ravensburger’s quick-start guidance describes switching cards in an existing deck, including a ready-to-play starter deck, as the easiest way to begin building and playing.

The provided preconstructed starter deck is a 60-card deck. That matters because ordinary constructed Lorcana decks must contain at least 60 cards. In other words, the starter deck already meets the normal minimum without requiring you to buy extra cards or make changes first.

What “play straight out of the box” means
For one player, it means you do not need boosters, singles, a second starter deck, or prior deck-building experience before your first game. Keep the cards in the supplied list, use the deck with the quick-start rules, and make changes later as you learn which cards and strategies you prefer.

“Straight out of the box” does not mean one deck can create a complete two-player game. Lorcana is played with opposing decks, so the other player must bring a second legal deck.
Do you need two starter decks for two players?
You need two legal decks, but they do not have to be two copies of the same starter product. One player can use a starter deck while the other uses another starter deck, a different preconstructed deck, or a deck assembled from their own collection.
The official rules establish the requirements for a legal constructed deck; they do not require the second player to purchase a particular product. Therefore, the practical answer depends on what the second player already owns.

- One starter deck and no other cards: enough for one player, not enough for a simultaneous two-player match.
- Two starter decks: the simplest way for two beginners to have complete decks immediately.
- One starter deck plus a friend’s legal deck: also sufficient for a two-player game.
- One starter deck plus a collection: sufficient if the collection can be assembled into a legal opposing deck.
Why sharing one deck does not solve the problem
Two people can take turns looking through or practicing with the same cards, but that is not a normal head-to-head game. Each side needs its own deck at the table. Splitting a single 60-card starter deck between players would leave neither player with the supplied legal deck and would not provide two complete decks.
Constructed deck rules you must preserve
When you modify a starter deck or build the opponent’s deck, follow the constructed-deck limits in the official quick-start and tournament rules:

- The deck must contain at least 60 cards.
- It may use cards from no more than two ink colors.
- It may include no more than four copies of any single card, identified by its full name.
These limits apply whether you are making small upgrades to the starter list or building a second deck from a larger collection. Adding cards is not automatically legal: every replacement or addition has to leave the deck within the card-count, ink-color, and copy limits.
A safe way to upgrade the starter list
- Play the supplied list first. Use it long enough to understand what the deck is trying to do and which cards feel useful or awkward.
- Choose the same one or two ink colors. A card outside those colors cannot simply be added to a constructed deck without changing the deck’s color composition.
- Check the full card name. Keep the total number of copies at four or fewer, even if the cards have different artwork or other identifying details.
- Keep the deck at the legal minimum or above. Removing cards while testing changes is fine only if the finished deck still contains at least the required number.
- Recheck the current organized-play rules. Rotation and banned-card policies can change which otherwise legal cards may be used in an event.
For casual play, agreeing on the rules and card pool before the game prevents surprises. For an organized event, the event’s current format announcement and the latest official rules control.
How a second deck can be supplied
The best second-deck choice depends on whether you want to play immediately, learn deck construction, or prepare for a particular format.
| Option | Immediate playability | Supplies a complete legal deck | How it helps with upgrades | Format considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Another starter or preconstructed deck | Yes, when opened and used as supplied | Yes | Provides a defined color combination and a baseline for later changes | Suitable for ordinary constructed play if it meets the current rules |
| Booster packs | No; cards must be selected and assembled | No, not by themselves | Adds possible replacements to an existing deck | Useful for building or upgrading, while Sealed and Booster Draft use their own procedures |
| Individual cards from a collection | Only if you already have enough cards to assemble the deck | Potentially, after checking all deck limits | Lets you target particular colors, effects, or missing copies | Legality depends on the format and the final list |
Prices, pull rates, stock, and regional availability are not fixed by the rules and vary by retailer and date. Check those details locally rather than treating a starter deck, booster, or single-card purchase as universally available.
When a starter deck is not the right format
A starter deck is an entry point for ordinary constructed play, not a substitute for every Lorcana format. Ravensburger distinguishes Core Constructed from booster-based formats, each with a different deck-building process.

Core Constructed
Core Constructed uses a player-built deck under the standard constructed rules. A starter deck can be used as that deck, or as the foundation for an upgraded list, provided the current color, copy, rotation, and banned-card requirements are met.
Sealed
Sealed play uses cards opened from booster packs to create a 40-card deck. Bringing a ready-made starter deck does not replace the booster-based pool required for this format.
Booster Draft
Booster Draft also produces a 40-card deck, but the cards are selected during the draft from booster packs. A starter deck is not the draft pool.
Pack Rush
Pack Rush uses two unopened booster packs. Its setup is intentionally different from opening and playing a starter deck, so a starter deck is not a Pack Rush kit.
If an event listing names Sealed, Booster Draft, or Pack Rush, follow that format’s booster requirements instead of assuming your starter deck is acceptable.

Practical setup for your first game
- Confirm the deck you are using. A supplied starter deck is already arranged as a complete starting list for one player.
- Find the opponent’s deck. Ask whether the other player is using another preconstructed deck or a constructed list from a collection.
- Check the intended format. Casual constructed play and booster-based formats do not use the same preparation.
- Use the official quick-start rules. They are written for learning with an existing ready-to-play deck.
- Do not change cards before the first learning game unless you have a reason. Playing the supplied list gives you a baseline for understanding later upgrades.
- After the game, record specific issues. Note cards you could not use, effects you wanted more often, and turns where the deck lacked an answer. Those observations make later changes more deliberate than replacing cards at random.
Common questions and edge cases
Can I buy one starter deck if I am learning alone?
Yes. One deck is sufficient for learning the rules, practicing decisions, and playing as one side of a game. You will need another legal deck when you want an opponent at the same table.
Can the second player use a deck built from random cards?
Only if the finished list satisfies the constructed rules. Randomly collected cards may exceed the two-color limit, contain more than four copies of a full card name, or fall short of the minimum deck size.
Can I combine two starter decks?
You can use cards from both collections in a new constructed list, but the combined deck still has to obey the same color, copy, and minimum-size limits. Combining everything without checking those limits does not automatically produce a legal deck.
Is a starter deck guaranteed to be legal in an organized event?
It is identified as a 60-card preconstructed deck and is built as a starting constructed deck, but event legality can change with rotation and banned-card policies. Check the latest event rules before entering.

Official rules are updated over time. The Ravensburger resources page lists Comprehensive Rules updated July 23, 2026, and Tournament Rules updated June 24, 2026. Those dates identify the versions available in the cited resources; an event held later may use a newer revision.
Before a tournament, verify the organizer’s format, the current Comprehensive Rules, the current Tournament Rules, and any rotation or banned-card announcement. This is especially important when upgrading an older starter deck or bringing cards from several release periods.
