You can play Enshrouded multiplayer without renting or running a dedicated server. The game supports peer-to-peer co-op, in which one player’s game client hosts the session and friends join while that player is online. A dedicated server is optional; its main advantage is letting friends access the shared world when the usual host is away.

What “without a server” means in Enshrouded
When players ask whether they need a server, they usually mean a dedicated server: a separate, continuously running program hosted on another computer or a rental provider. That is not required for ordinary Enshrouded co-op.

The host starts the world, and other players connect to that active session. There is still online networking involved, but there is no separate dedicated-server installation, monthly rental, or always-on machine needed for this arrangement.
The important trade-off is availability. A peer-to-peer world exists for friends to join while the host is playing. If that host leaves or is offline, friends cannot enter that session until the host starts it again. A dedicated server addresses that specific limitation by running the world independently of any one player’s game session.

Does Enshrouded officially support peer-to-peer co-op?
Yes. Keen Games’ official information distinguishes peer-to-peer sessions from dedicated servers. The official server FAQ says the server browser can list both dedicated and peer-to-peer sessions, and an official hotfix refers to “self-hosted servers (solo/peer-to-peer hosting)” separately from dedicated servers.
The game also supports solo and offline play. Its official FAQ describes playing with “a friend or three (and up to 16!),” while the Steam listing identifies both Single-player and Online Co-op. Taken together, those descriptions establish three relevant modes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Solo/offline: you play by yourself without an online session.
- Peer-to-peer co-op: one player hosts from the game client and friends join that live session.
- Dedicated hosting: a separate server process remains available even when the original host is not playing.
Therefore, “multiplayer without a server” is a valid description of peer-to-peer co-op, provided “server” means a dedicated server. You do not need to rent one just to play with friends.
How to start an Enshrouded multiplayer session without a dedicated server
The exact button names can change with platform and game updates, but the process follows the same pattern. The host uses the game’s multiplayer or session controls, then friends join through the available invitation or server-browser option.
- Choose the player who will host. That person must be able to remain in the session for the group’s play time. The host’s client is the active connection point for the peer-to-peer world.
- Launch Enshrouded and load or create the world. Use the game’s normal world-selection flow, then select the multiplayer option rather than treating the session as a private solo game.
- Make the session joinable. Use the in-game invitation controls or the peer-to-peer listing shown in the server browser. The official documentation confirms that peer-to-peer sessions can appear in that browser alongside dedicated servers.
- Have friends join while the host is in the world. Friends can accept an invitation or select the visible peer-to-peer session, depending on the interface presented by the current version.
- Keep the host connected for the entire session. The world remains available to the group only while the host’s peer-to-peer session is active.
- End the session when finished. Once the host leaves, other players should expect the peer-to-peer session to stop being available. They can play together again when the host returns and starts the world.
No dedicated-server software or rental subscription is part of these steps. The only required online host is the player running the peer-to-peer session.
What happens when the host is offline?
Friends cannot independently open the peer-to-peer world while its host is offline. This is the central limitation of client-hosted multiplayer: the host’s game must be running the session before other players have somewhere to connect.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That limitation matters most for groups with different schedules. If one person normally plays in the evening, friends who log in earlier cannot enter that world on their own. The group must wait until the host starts the game and loads the session. The same applies if the host closes the game, loses the connection, or otherwise stops hosting; the peer-to-peer session is no longer available to join.
A dedicated server changes the access model rather than improving the basic requirement for co-op. The server runs separately, so players can connect while the person who originally organized the world is away. Keen Games describes dedicated servers specifically for players who do not want friends to have to wait for the host to be online.
Peer-to-peer versus a dedicated server
| Consideration | Peer-to-peer session | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the session? | One player’s Enshrouded game client | A separate server process, either self-hosted or rented |
| Must the usual host be online? | Yes. Friends join while that player is hosting. | No. Players connect to the server independently of the original host’s game session. |
| Setup | Start the world and invite or list the session in-game | Configure and maintain a dedicated-server setup |
| Recurring rental cost | No dedicated-server rental is required | Possible rental or hardware and maintenance costs; no universal price is established here |
| Best fit | Friends who usually play together at the same time | Groups that need the world available on different schedules |
| Officially described group size | The official FAQ describes co-op groups of up to 16 players. | |
The table’s “up to 16” figure comes from the official FAQ’s general co-op description. It is not a promise that every session will perform identically at that size; connection quality, platform conditions, and the current game version can affect the experience.
Do you have to pay for an Enshrouded server?
No. A peer-to-peer session does not require a dedicated-server rental, so a group can play online co-op without adding a server bill. The host simply runs the game and keeps the session active.
Dedicated hosting is an optional upgrade for convenience. It may involve running the server yourself or renting server capacity from a provider. Keen Games’ FAQ names GPortal as a rental partner and notes that other providers may also be used, but the choice of provider is separate from the question of whether multiplayer works at all. You can play co-op without selecting any provider.
Because no universal dedicated-hosting price is established in the available official information, treat cost as provider-, location-, and configuration-dependent. The reliable distinction is simpler: peer-to-peer avoids a dedicated-server rental, while dedicated hosting introduces setup or rental overhead in exchange for host-independent access.
Which option fits your group?
Choose peer-to-peer when everyone normally plays together
Peer-to-peer is the straightforward choice for a small group that coordinates its play sessions. One person starts the world, friends join, and nobody has to configure another program. It is especially suitable when the host is comfortable being the person who starts each session and remains connected until the group is done.
Choose dedicated hosting when schedules do not match
A dedicated server becomes useful when players want to enter the shared world at different times, when the regular host travels, or when the group does not want progress to depend on one person launching the game. Its defining benefit is persistence of access while the original host is offline, not a requirement imposed by the game.

Use solo or offline play for individual sessions
If you do not need friends to join, Enshrouded also supports solo and offline play. That mode avoids online co-op entirely and does not require a peer-to-peer host or dedicated server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning a peer-to-peer group of up to 16
The official FAQ’s “up to 16” description gives groups a useful ceiling for planning, but a large roster does not mean every person must be online at once. The practical question is whether the players can gather around the host’s active session.
- Nominate a dependable host. The group needs one person who can start the world when everyone wants to play.
- Set expectations about access. Make clear that the world is not independently joinable while that host is offline.
- Use invitations or the browser consistently. Everyone should know whether the group normally joins through an invitation or by locating the peer-to-peer listing.
- Consider a dedicated server only for schedule freedom. If the host-offline limitation is acceptable, paying for separate hosting does not solve a problem you actually have.
Troubleshooting a session that friends cannot join
Start with the issue that explains the most failures: confirm that the designated host is currently in the world and still running the peer-to-peer session. A friend searching for a session before the host has loaded it will not find an available world.
Next, check the basic connection path in order:
- Confirm the host has loaded the intended world rather than remaining at a menu or in a solo-only session.
- Have the host send a fresh invitation or verify that the peer-to-peer entry is visible in the server browser.
- Ask the joining player to accept the invitation or refresh the browser listing.
- If the host has just disconnected, restart the session from the host’s client and have everyone rejoin.
- Make sure all players are running the same current game update; a version mismatch can prevent a session from appearing or joining correctly.
If the group repeatedly needs access while the host is absent, that is not a normal peer-to-peer fault to “fix.” It is the model’s intended limitation. Move to a dedicated server when independent access is the requirement.
Common questions about server-free multiplayer
Is peer-to-peer the same as playing offline?
No. Offline play is solo. Peer-to-peer co-op is an online session hosted by one player’s client, so friends still need to connect over the network.
Can friends keep playing after the host closes the game?
Not in that peer-to-peer session. Once the host stops hosting, the world is no longer available for friends to join. A dedicated server is the option intended for access without the original host online.
Do I need a dedicated server to play with 16 people?
No. The official FAQ describes co-op for up to 16 players without making dedicated hosting a prerequisite. The deciding factor for peer-to-peer is host availability, not a requirement to rent a server.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I self-host a dedicated server instead of renting one?
Yes. Official information distinguishes self-hosted servers from dedicated servers and identifies peer-to-peer hosting as a separate client-hosted mode. Self-hosting still requires a separate server setup; it is not the same as simply launching a normal peer-to-peer session.
Bottom line
Enshrouded multiplayer works without a dedicated server. Start a peer-to-peer world from one player’s game client, invite friends, and keep that host online while the group plays. Rent or self-host a dedicated server only when you need the world to remain available while the usual host is offline.
