What you need for a legal setup
- An authentic Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem GameCube disc.
- A Nintendo GameCube or an original Wii model RVL-001.

How to play the disc on a Nintendo GameCube
- Check the label and condition of the authentic disc. Avoid copies with severe scratches, cracks or an unreadable label.
- Confirm that the disc region matches the GameCube region. A different-region disc may fail to boot.
- Connect a GameCube controller to a controller port.
- Insert the memory card into a front memory-card slot before starting a new game if you want to save progress.
- Insert the disc, power on the console and choose the game from the GameCube start screen.
The GameCube is the simplest officially documented configuration because it was designed for this game and does not require checking Wii model revisions.
How to use the original Wii
Identify the compatible Wii model first
Look for the four controller ports and two memory-card slots behind the flap on the front of the Wii. Their presence identifies the original RVL-001 design. Region coding: the check that can stop a legitimate disc from working
GameCube discs are region encoded. Nintendo warns that a disc from a different region may not play on a console. Before buying a used copy, compare the disc’s regional marking with the console’s market version. A North American disc, for example, should be paired with a North American console; do not assume that physically identical discs are interchangeable worldwide.
Region compatibility is separate from disc condition. A clean, authentic disc can still fail to start when its region does not match, while a matching-region disc may fail because of scratches, optical-drive wear or a damaged console.
Why Wii U is not a workaround
Wii U can play Wii U and Wii discs, but it does not include GameCube disc compatibility. Nintendo’s support documentation explicitly lists GameCube discs among unsupported formats. A Wii U owner therefore cannot place the original disc in the Wii U drive and expect it to appear in the Wii Menu or Disc Channel. The Wii U’s ability to run some Wii software does not extend to GameCube media.

Is there a Switch version, remaster or remake?
No current official remaster, remake or Nintendo Switch Online release is confirmed in the available records. Reports about a possible return describe speculation rather than an announced product. The same qualification applies to Switch 2: no confirmed official edition is established here.

The legal boundary around downloads and emulation
Owning a GameCube, Wii or the original disc does not automatically make every downloaded copy legal. Nintendo’s piracy guidance classifies games obtained through peer-to-peer networks or links to files hosted on third-party platforms as unauthorized copies. It also identifies mod chips and other circumvention devices as tools that bypass console security.

- Region: Confirm that the seller’s disc matches your GameCube or RVL-001 Wii region.
- Authenticity: Ask for clear photographs of the disc label, underside and case. Suspicious labels, poor printing or a price far below comparable used copies warrant caution.
- Condition: Check for deep scratches, cracks around the center ring and signs of moisture damage. A seller who cannot describe testing provides less assurance.
- Completeness: Make sure the listing is for the actual game disc, not only a case, manual or reproduction item.

Troubleshooting a failed launch
The Wii does not show the disc
First check the model number. RVL-101 and Wii mini systems cannot read GameCube discs, so cleaning or changing the menu will not add compatibility. On an RVL-001, remove and reinsert the disc, check its region and inspect it for damage.
The game starts but will not save
Confirm that a GameCube memory card is inserted in the front slot and that it has available space. A Wii SD card or a Wii Remote does not replace the GameCube memory card required by the game.

The controller is not responding
Use a genuine or compatible GameCube-style controller connected to one of the GameCube ports. Wii Remote controls are not the game’s documented input method. On a Wii, ensure the controller is plugged in before launching the disc.
A used disc works on another console but not yours
Compare regions before assuming the drive is defective. If the regions match, inspect the disc and test another known-good GameCube disc to distinguish media damage from a console or optical-drive problem.
