Can You Play Every Original Nintendo Switch Indie Game on Switch 2? Compatibility Explained

No. Nintendo Switch 2 runs a broad selection of original Nintendo Switch games, including compatible cartridges and digital purchases, but Nintendo says some titles are unsupported or only partially compatible. Indie games are not automatically exempt: each release must be checked in Nintendo’s compatibility lookup.

A game may fail to start, block progress, or launch with a specific in-game defect. Accessories and software versions can also change the result, so “it runs” does not always mean “it reproduces the original Switch experience.”

What backward compatibility on Switch 2 actually means

Switch 2 is designed to play compatible Nintendo Switch software alongside games made specifically for the newer console. Nintendo describes compatibility as broad rather than universal: differences in hardware can leave a game unsupported, partially functional, or playable only after an update.

That applies equally to independent releases and larger third-party games. There is no separate rule that guarantees every indie title will work. Nintendo records compatibility at the individual-title level, and its lists include independently published games with known problems.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Compatibility is also a moving target. Nintendo says future testing and software updates may increase the number of supported titles, while some games can take longer to become playable or may continue to have partial-functionality issues. Treat the current title record—not a general statement about the console—as the authority for a purchase or transfer decision.

How to check a specific indie game before you buy or transfer it

  1. Identify the exact release. Note the game’s title, region, publisher and whether you own a physical game card or a digital license. Different editions or updates can have different records.
  2. Open Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility lookup. Search for the exact game rather than assuming that a similarly named release has the same status.
  3. Read the qualification, not just the headline status. Look for notes about startup, progression, controls, accessories, visual defects or other in-game limitations.
  4. Check for a required update. A publisher patch can change playability. Install the latest available software on both the console and the game before testing.
  5. Confirm your control and accessory setup. A title that uses standard buttons may work with the Switch 2 controllers, while one that depends on original Joy-Con hardware, an IR camera or Toy-Con equipment may not reproduce every feature.
  6. Recheck before purchasing a cartridge. Nintendo cautions buyers to check compatibility before buying Switch games for use on Switch 2. A physical format does not override a software or hardware limitation.

Nintendo’s own guidance warns that testing and updates can change results. A lookup result is therefore a dated status check, not a permanent guarantee for every future firmware and game version.

The four practical compatibility outcomes

Status What you can expect What to verify
Supported The title is listed as playable on Switch 2 under the stated conditions. Whether a patch, download or specific controller is required.
Launches with an in-game issue The game starts, but Nintendo has identified a defect or limitation during play. Whether the affected feature matters to your save, mode or control method.
Startup or progress blocked The game may not start, or a problem can prevent normal progression. Whether a publisher update has changed the current listing.
Unsupported Nintendo does not currently support the title on Switch 2. Any later compatibility update before attempting another purchase or transfer.

The distinction between the middle two categories matters. A title can boot to its menu and still be effectively unplayable if a known issue stops progress. Conversely, an in-game issue may affect only one feature while the rest of the game remains usable.

Indie games already named in Nintendo’s issue lists

Nintendo’s published issue lists include independently released games, demonstrating why a blanket “all indies work” answer is unsafe. Examples on the in-game issue list include Dadish, Dex, Elderand and Factorio. Their appearance means Nintendo has documented a compatibility concern; it does not, by itself, describe the severity of every issue or predict the status of a later patch.

A separate list covers games that cannot start correctly or that encounter problems preventing progress. That list contains many additional third-party and indie releases. Because the documents are live and can change as firmware and publisher updates arrive, use the current entry for the particular game you intend to play.

Do not infer that an unlisted game is guaranteed perfect. Nintendo’s lookup is title-based, and an issue can be discovered or corrected after a list is published. Absence from an issue example is not a substitute for checking the current title record.

Physical cartridges versus digital Switch games

Physical game cards

Compatible physical Nintendo Switch game cards can be used with Switch 2. “Compatible,” however, is the key condition: inserting a cartridge does not make an unsupported game playable. Check the exact title in Nintendo’s lookup before buying a used or new card for the newer console, and install any required game update.

Cartridge ownership also does not guarantee that every downloadable component will be available. If a game relies on an online service, additional download or a particular update, those requirements remain separate from the card itself.

Digital purchases

Nintendo Switch digital purchases can be redownloaded and played on Switch 2 when the software is compatible and your account is entitled to it. Digital ownership does not remove the same title-level limits: an incompatible or partially compatible game remains so whether it was bought from the eShop or loaded from a card.

Before transferring a library, make sure the Switch 2 has enough storage and that the game’s current software version is installed. Nintendo documents storage and microSD limitations for Switch 2, so an older card or accessory may not be usable in the same way as it was on an original Switch.

Controllers, motion features and accessories can change the answer

Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. That difference is important for games that expect attached Joy-Con, particular motion behavior or features provided by the original controller hardware.

Nintendo also documents constraints involving the original Switch dock, microSD cards and Toy-Con or other accessories. A game can therefore be listed as software-compatible while its original accessory-dependent experience is limited. IR-camera functions, controller-specific inputs and Toy-Con configurations should be treated as separate checks.

Use this accessory checklist

  • Standard controls: Games using ordinary buttons and sticks are the simplest case, subject to the title’s compatibility status.
  • Motion controls: Verify that the required controller pairing and motion feature are supported in the game’s current setup.
  • IR camera: If the game uses an infrared camera, confirm that the necessary original Joy-Con hardware is available and supported.
  • Attached Joy-Con: Wireless pairing is not the same as attaching a controller to the console.
  • Toy-Con and special peripherals: Check Nintendo’s accessory notes before assuming the original physical setup will work.
  • Dock and storage: Do not assume an original dock or microSD card has identical behavior on Switch 2.

Compatibility is not the same as a Switch 2 enhancement

A compatible original Switch version is not automatically an enhanced Switch 2 edition. Nintendo’s catalog distinguishes among the original version, free updates, paid upgrades and separate Switch 2 editions.

Version path Meaning What to check
Original Switch version The existing game runs under Switch 2 compatibility rules. Title status, issue notes and required updates.
Free update The publisher adds Switch 2-related improvements without a separate upgrade purchase, where offered. Eligibility and installation requirements.
Paid upgrade An owner of the original game can buy additional Switch 2 features or content. Price, region, edition and account entitlement.
Separate Switch 2 edition A distinct release is sold or distributed for the newer console. Whether your original ownership transfers and which features are included.

Do not buy an upgrade on the assumption that it fixes every compatibility issue. The upgrade path and the original version’s support status are related but separate questions.

A decision process for your existing indie library

If you own a digital game

  1. Open your Switch 2 software library and identify the exact title and edition.
  2. Search that title in Nintendo’s compatibility lookup.
  3. Install the latest system and game updates.
  4. Read any issue note before launching a valuable save or starting a long playthrough.
  5. Test the controls and any required accessory in a short session before relying on the game for regular play.

If you own a cartridge

  1. Confirm that the game card is for the Nintendo Switch release you intend to use.
  2. Check the title in Nintendo’s lookup before inserting or purchasing it.
  3. Insert the card and allow the console to download any required update.
  4. Verify that your save data, downloadable content and online features are available under your account.
  5. If the game depends on original Joy-Con or another peripheral, test that hardware separately.

If you are deciding whether to buy

Check compatibility first, then decide between physical and digital ownership. A favorable status does not promise an enhanced edition, and an unfavorable status should not be treated as a temporary inconvenience unless Nintendo or the publisher has documented a fix.

What Nintendo’s lists do—and do not—tell you

Nintendo provides title-level records and issue categories rather than a published percentage for the share of all original Switch indie games that are fully compatible. There is no authoritative universal compatibility rate to apply to an indie library, because the total population of “all indie games” is not defined in the records and statuses can change.

The lists also do not turn every issue into the same practical outcome. A cosmetic or mode-specific defect may be tolerable to one player and unacceptable to another; a startup or progression block generally prevents normal play. Read the detailed note and match it to the way you intend to use the game.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “backward compatible” means universal. Nintendo’s wording explicitly allows unsupported and partially compatible games.
  • Checking only the console, not the title. Compatibility is recorded per game and can depend on updates.
  • Confusing launch with playability. A game that reaches its menu may still contain a progression-blocking problem.
  • Assuming wireless Joy-Con pairing replaces every original feature. Paired controllers cannot attach to Switch 2, and accessory-specific functions may differ.
  • Paying for an enhancement you do not need—or expecting one for free. Free updates, paid upgrades and separate editions are different products.
  • Relying on an old list entry. Nintendo’s issue documents can change as testing and patches continue.

Bottom line for Switch indie players

Switch 2 is a strong way to carry forward a large Nintendo Switch library, but it is not a guarantee that every original indie game will work perfectly. Check each title in Nintendo’s current compatibility lookup, distinguish startup or progression blocks from lesser in-game issues, and verify any Joy-Con, IR-camera, Toy-Con, dock or storage requirement. Then confirm whether you are using the original version, a free update, a paid upgrade or a separate Switch 2 edition.
