Grand Theft Auto IV is playable on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S through Xbox backward compatibility. Series X accepts a compatible Xbox 360 disc or a digital entitlement; the disc-free Series S requires digital access. The original PlayStation 3 version does not work on PS5, and the official material cited here does not identify a PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV.
That makes an Xbox Series console the current officially supported way to play the console version on a modern system. Your choice of Series model determines whether you can use a disc, while the edition you buy determines whether the two Liberty City story expansions are included.

Backward compatibility, not a new-generation port
Xbox Wire announced on February 9, 2017 that Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City became playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility. The announcement states, “All versions of the game, including Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, are compatible on Xbox One.” Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One backward-compatible titles, and the current Xbox store listing identifies GTA IV as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
This is an official compatibility path for the existing Xbox 360 game. The cited announcements do not describe a separate Series X|S remaster, a new graphics mode, or a next-generation edition. Do not buy it expecting features that have not been announced for this release.
Using an Xbox 360 disc on Series X
Series X is the model with a disc drive, so it can use a compatible Xbox 360 GTA IV disc. The process is not a direct, disc-only launch: the console uses the disc to verify ownership and downloads the backward-compatible game package. Xbox Wire describes it this way: “Physical game owners can just insert the Xbox 360 game disc into their Xbox One and download the game.” Keep the disc available whenever you need to reinstall or start the disc-owned copy, because it remains the ownership key.
Using a digital copy on Series X
A digital entitlement is tied to the Microsoft account that owns it. Sign in to that account on the Series X, open your games library, and look under the games ready to install. Xbox’s 2017 announcement says digital owners can download the game from the Ready to Install section. If the title does not appear, check that you are using the purchasing account and that the console is connected to Xbox network services before troubleshooting the installation.

Using Series S
Series S has no optical drive. A boxed Xbox 360 copy, including a Complete Edition disc, cannot be converted into a Series S license. You need a digital purchase or an existing digital entitlement on the correct Microsoft account. Once owned digitally, installation follows the same library-based process as on Series X.

Which editions and episodes are covered?
The Xbox compatibility announcement includes the base game and the Complete Edition. It also covers Episodes from Liberty City, the standalone package containing GTA IV’s two major story expansions: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.
| Content | Xbox Series X|S status | Practical buying note |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | Playable through Xbox backward compatibility. | Available as a digital listing or through a compatible Xbox 360 disc on Series X. |
| The Lost and Damned | Listed as an add-on in the Xbox catalog and covered by the compatibility announcement. | Confirm whether your purchase is the base game, an add-on, or a bundle before checkout. |
| The Ballad of Gay Tony | Listed as an add-on in the Xbox catalog and covered by the compatibility announcement. | Check the current product description for the exact bundle contents in your region. |
| Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition | Xbox Wire explicitly says all versions, including this edition, are compatible on Xbox One; Xbox Series X|S carries that title family forward. | A physical copy can be used only on Series X; Series S requires a digital entitlement. |
Store pages can separate the base game and episode add-ons, and bundle contents can differ by region or change over time. Read the edition name and included-content list rather than assuming that every listing contains both episodes.
Step-by-step: playing on an Xbox Series console
Digital purchase or digital entitlement
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that purchased GTA IV or holds the digital entitlement.
- Open My games & apps, then your full library, and check Ready to install. Xbox’s compatibility guidance identifies this as the download location for digital owners.
- Select the GTA IV listing and start the installation. If you want the expansions, verify that the Complete Edition or the individual episode add-ons are included in your ownership list.
- Let the console complete the download and any compatibility updates while connected to Xbox network services.
- Launch the game from the installed library. If the game is missing, sign out and back in with the purchasing account before considering a new purchase.
Xbox 360 disc on Series X
- Confirm that you have Series X rather than Series S; only Series X has the required disc drive.
- Insert the GTA IV Xbox 360 disc. The console should recognize the backward-compatible title and present an installation prompt.
- Accept the download. The disc is used to establish ownership, while the playable package is installed to the console’s storage.
- Leave the disc in the drive when launching the game or reinstalling it. A disc purchase does not become a transferable digital license.
- If you own a Complete Edition or an Episodes from Liberty City disc, check the on-screen product name and installed add-ons so you know which content is present.
Why a PS3 copy does not work on PS5
PS5’s disc limitation
PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility documentation explicitly states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” GTA IV’s original PlayStation console release was on PS3. Consequently, inserting a GTA IV PS3 disc into a PS5 cannot install or authenticate the game; the disc format is outside the console’s supported backward-compatibility scope.

No identified PS4 or PS5 edition
The cited official catalog material does not identify a PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV. Rockstar’s own announcement about carrying GTA IV and Episodes from Liberty City forward names Xbox 360 titles on Xbox Series X|S; it does not announce a PS5 port. Therefore, buying a PS3 disc, searching the PS5 store for a native version, or expecting a PS5 upgrade will not provide an established way to play GTA IV on that console.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
There is also no cited Rockstar announcement confirming a future remaster. Treat rumors or speculative listings as unconfirmed until an official product page or announcement says otherwise.

| Situation | Best-supported route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You own an Xbox 360 disc and have Series X | Insert the disc and download the backward-compatible package. | The disc must remain available for ownership checks; it cannot be used on Series S. |
| You own an Xbox 360 disc and have Series S | Obtain a digital license separately. | Series S has no disc drive, so the physical copy alone is not usable. |
| You want the simplest setup on either Xbox model | Use the digital Xbox listing with the correct Microsoft account. | Price and availability vary by region and can change. |
| You have only a PS5 | Use a PS3, Xbox Series console, or another officially supported platform. | A PS3 disc is not a PS5-compatible purchase. |
The Xbox/Microsoft store page showed a base digital listing at $19.99 at the time of its 2026 page crawl. That is a time- and region-specific snapshot, not a guaranteed current price. Taxes, currency conversion, discounts, delistings, and regional catalog rules can change the amount or whether the listing is visible. Physical Xbox 360 discs likewise vary in stock, condition, and price.
Troubleshooting common problems
The disc is not recognized on Series X
- Verify that the disc is an Xbox 360 version of GTA IV, not a PS3 disc or a different regional product with an incompatible listing.
- Clean the disc and inspect it for damage. The console needs to read it before it can verify ownership.
- Confirm that the console is online so it can retrieve the backward-compatible download.
- Remove and reinsert the disc, then restart the console if the installation prompt does not appear.
- Make sure the disc remains inserted when launching. Installing the package does not remove the disc requirement.
The game is missing from Ready to install
- Switch to the Microsoft account that originally purchased the digital copy.
- Check the complete library rather than only the recently installed list.
- Search the Xbox catalog for the exact edition name, because the base game and episode add-ons may appear as separate entries.
- Confirm that the title is available in your current region; store catalogs and prices are not universal.
An episode is not available after installing the base game
Review the purchase receipt or product page. The base GTA IV listing and the two episode add-ons can be separate products, while the Complete Edition or Episodes from Liberty City package may bundle them. Installing the base game alone does not establish ownership of an add-on that was not included in the purchase.
A PS5 owner bought a PS3 disc
Do not keep trying to install it on PS5: the platform restriction is explicit. The practical options are obtaining access to a PS3, moving to an Xbox Series console with the appropriate Xbox edition, or using another platform that officially supports the game.
Quick Recap
What to check before you buy
- Console model: choose Series X if you need to use an Xbox 360 disc; choose Series S only if you are prepared to buy or use digital licenses.
- Edition: identify whether the listing is GTA IV alone, Episodes from Liberty City, an add-on, or the Complete Edition.
- Account: digital purchases must be associated with the Microsoft account you will use on the console.
- Region: verify the current store listing, currency, availability, and bundle contents for your country.
- Physical copy: inspect the disc and remember that ownership verification requires the disc to stay available on Series X.
- Expectations: compatibility makes the Xbox 360 release playable; the cited sources do not promise a new-generation remaster or a PS5 port.
