No. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI can be stored on a compatible USB external drive, but it cannot be launched from that drive. When you want to play, you must copy the PS5 game data back to the PS5 console storage. A compatible internal M.2 SSD is different: once installed, it can store and launch PS5 games directly.
The distinction matters because Grand Theft Auto VI is listed as a PS5 game, with PS5 Pro Enhanced support, rather than a PS4 title. PlayStation lists its release date as November 19, 2026. The external-drive rules below therefore apply to the version GTA 6 players will install on PS5.

What the PS5 version of GTA 6 supports
Grand Theft Auto VI is listed for PS5 and is marked PS5 Pro Enhanced. PlayStation’s published release date is November 19, 2026. That platform classification determines where the game may run, regardless of whether the external device has enough free space.

| Question | Answer for GTA 6 on PS5 |
|---|---|
| Can the game be kept on a USB external drive? | Yes. USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data. |
| Can the PS5 version launch directly from USB? | No. PlayStation requires PS5 games to be copied to console storage before playing. |
| Can an internal M.2 SSD launch the game? | Yes, if the SSD is compatible with PS5 and correctly installed. |
| Is a PS4 version covered by the exception for USB play? | No PS4 version is listed in the supplied platform information; the documented GTA 6 release is the PS5 version. |
In other words, an external drive is an archive and transfer location for GTA 6, not a second place from which the PS5 version can execute.

- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Why a USB drive cannot run a PS5 game
PlayStation states the rule directly: PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.
The restriction is a system storage rule, not a GTA-specific setting and not something a faster USB cable or a larger external disk removes.
USB extended storage is still useful. It lets you move a game off the PS5’s built-in storage when you need room for another installation, then bring the game back without downloading the entire title again. The trade-off is an additional copy operation every time you switch from storage mode to play mode.
The PS4 exception does not help with GTA 6
PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage. That exception often causes confusion when people see a PS4 game launch from an external disk and expect the same behavior from a PS5 title. It does not apply to the PS5 version of GTA 6. Selecting the game from USB does not turn it into a directly playable PS5 installation; the PS5 data must be returned to console storage first.

PlayStation describes compatible external devices as SuperSpeed USB storage. The published capacity range is a minimum of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB. A drive outside that range does not meet the stated extended-storage specification for this use.
- The device must support the SuperSpeed USB requirement identified by PlayStation.
- Its capacity must be at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB.
- Formatting it as USB extended storage erases data already on the drive.
- The drive can hold PS5 games, but those games still need to be copied to console storage before launch.
That erase warning is important if the disk contains photos, computer backups or other games. Copy anything you need elsewhere before accepting the PS5 formatting prompt. The capacity figures describe the supported range; they do not state how much space GTA 6 itself will require. No official install-size figure is established in the available PlayStation information.
How to move GTA 6 to a USB drive
Use this process when you want to free internal PS5 space while keeping the game available for a later transfer. The game must already be installed on the console, and the external drive must be connected and configured as USB extended storage.
- Open the PS5 game library.
- Highlight Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the game and choose the connected USB extended-storage drive as the destination.
- Confirm the move and wait for the copy operation to finish before disconnecting the drive.
The move places the PS5 game data on the USB device for storage. It does not create a USB installation from which the game can be launched. If you select the title later while it remains on USB, the console will direct you to copy it back.

How to copy GTA 6 back before playing
When you are ready to play again, return the data to the PS5’s console storage. PlayStation’s storage workflow identifies the return action as Copy when the game is listed on USB storage.
- Connect the same USB extended-storage drive to the PS5.
- Open the game library and view the titles stored on the USB device.
- Highlight Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Open the Options menu.
- Choose Move Games and Apps, then select the PS5 console storage as the destination.
- Choose Copy and let the transfer complete.
- Start the game only after the console shows the data on internal console storage.
This is a data transfer, not a fresh download from the PlayStation Store. The exact duration depends on the drive, connection and amount of data being copied. PlayStation has not published a GTA 6 transfer-time benchmark, so there is no reliable number of minutes to promise.
Internal M.2 SSD: the direct-play alternative
A compatible internal M.2 SSD uses a different PS5 storage path. PlayStation says an installed compatible M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 games. That means GTA 6 can remain on the M.2 drive and start from there, avoiding the repeated USB-to-console transfer.
The M.2 route involves more preparation than plugging in an external drive. You must obtain a model that meets the PS5’s compatibility requirements, install it in the console’s expansion bay and format it when prompted. The available guidance establishes that compatibility is required, but it does not specify a particular brand, model, price or GTA 6 capacity requirement.

Which storage choice fits your situation?
Choose USB storage when you mainly need an archive
An external USB drive is practical if your goal is to keep GTA 6 available without occupying the PS5’s built-in space. Move the game to USB when you are not playing it, then copy it back when you return. This approach is also useful for rotating several large PS5 games through limited console storage, provided you accept the transfer step.
Choose an internal M.2 SSD when you play from the expansion drive
An internal M.2 SSD is the better fit if you want GTA 6 installed outside the original console storage and still want to launch it without moving it first. The benefit is convenience during normal play; the cost is selecting a compatible drive and completing an installation rather than using a removable disk.
Do not buy an external drive expecting a speed workaround
USB capacity does not change the launch rule. A higher-capacity or faster-marketed external drive can provide more room for stored games, but PlayStation still requires PS5 game data to be on console storage for play. Do not interpret “PS5-compatible external hard drive” as “can run PS5 games directly.”

Common problems and what they mean
The game appears on the external drive but will not start
That is expected for a PS5 installation. Use the storage menu to move or copy GTA 6 to console storage, then launch it from there. Reconnecting the USB drive without performing that copy does not satisfy the requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
The PS5 asks to format the external drive
Formatting as USB extended storage erases the data already on that drive. Cancel if you have not backed up files you need. After backing up, use a drive within the 250 GB to 8 TB range that meets the SuperSpeed USB specification.
You expected a PS4-style direct launch
Direct play from USB is documented for PS4 games. GTA 6 is listed as a PS5 game, so the PS4 exception is not applicable to this installation.
You are trying to plan space before release
The official listing gives GTA 6’s PS5 platform and November 19, 2026 release date, but the available information does not publish an install-size figure. Leave enough free console or M.2 capacity for the eventual installation rather than relying on an unverified number from a rumor or retailer listing.
What is and is not known about performance
The storage policy establishes where the game may launch, not how long a transfer will take or how much faster one drive will feel. No independent benchmark, load-time statistic or confirmed GTA 6 install size is available in the stated sources. Consequently, it would be misleading to promise a particular USB transfer duration, loading improvement or required disk capacity.
The dependable planning rule is simple: USB extended storage is for holding the PS5 data, while the PS5 console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD is for launching it. If you want the fewest storage-management steps, install GTA 6 on console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. If you want removable overflow space, use USB storage and budget for a copy back before play.
