The Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot read a GTA IV PS3 disc under any circumstance. A disc-equipped PS5 still does not gain PS3 compatibility merely by having a drive.

Do not confuse a physical disc drive with support for every PlayStation generation. The drive only reads a disc; the console still needs compatible software and an appropriate license pathway. Buying a PS5 with a drive solely to use a GTA IV PS3 disc will not meet that requirement.
Is GTA IV available on the PS4 or PS5 Store?
The cited official Sony and Rockstar material does not identify a PS4 or PS5 edition or digital download of GTA IV. That means a listing, search result, or retailer description claiming “PS4/PS5 compatible” should not be treated as proof that it is an official GTA IV release.
Check the exact product name and platform before paying. A listing for a soundtrack, an account transfer, a streaming service, an unrelated compilation, or a different Grand Theft Auto game is not a PS4 or PS5 version of GTA IV.

The PlayStation Store lists Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for PS5 and PS4. It is a separate trilogy product. Its availability on those consoles does not indicate that GTA IV has been remastered, ported, or added to the same platforms.

If your goal is Liberty City, Niko Bellic, or GTA IV’s original campaign and episodes, the trilogy listing does not satisfy that goal. Read the complete title and included games before purchasing.

For example, an imported game disc may start on a PS3, yet DLC purchased from a different PSN region can be incompatible with that disc. Before buying an import, identify:
- The region or market printed on the game packaging and disc.
- The PSN account region that will be used for any DLC purchase.
- Whether the specific DLC listing is intended for that same game region.
Do not assume that language support, the console’s physical location, or a seller’s “works worldwide” claim overrides the region lock. If you only need the base game, the DLC mismatch risk is lower, but the disc still needs to be a genuine, readable PS3 copy.

Read the platform label, not just the headline
Marketplace titles often combine console names to attract searches. “PS4/PS5 compatible” is not evidence of an official GTA IV release. Look for an explicit PlayStation 3 designation and product photographs showing the actual disc and case.

“Complete Edition” may appear in listings for the original product. Treat it as a package description, not as a newer-generation port. The relevant question remains: does the package contain a PS3 game disc?

Confirm what is physically included
A case, manual, or promotional code without the game disc does not provide the PS3 software. If a listing is missing photographs or says “digital delivery” without identifying an official PS4 or PS5 release, do not assume it is usable on your console.
Check region before adding DLC
An inexpensive imported disc can become more complicated if you later buy add-on content. Match the game and DLC regions first, especially when the listing does not clearly identify its market.
Common assumptions that lead to the wrong purchase
- “Every Grand Theft Auto game on PS5 is the same product.” Different games and compilations have different platform releases. The PS5 trilogy listing is not GTA IV.
