Yes. Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit for both the original PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and San Andreas – The Definitive Edition. That confirms Windows 10 is a supported operating system in the published requirements, but it does not guarantee that every older installation or PC configuration will work without issues. First identify which edition you have: their hardware requirements are very different.

Which GTA: San Andreas edition do you have?

The original PC release is the classic game; The Definitive Edition is a separate, updated release with changes to lighting and environments, high-resolution textures, increased draw distance and GTA V-style controls, according to its Steam listing. Rockstar also sells San Andreas as part of the Definitive Edition trilogy.

Do not use one edition’s specifications to judge the other. Rockstar’s requirements pages, last updated May 1 and May 2, 2024 respectively, list Windows 10 64-bit for both, but the original has much lower stated hardware requirements.

Original PC version: published requirements

Rockstar’s original PC requirements list:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: 1 GHz Pentium or AMD Athlon
  • Memory: 256 MB
  • Graphics: 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible video card, GeForce 3 or better
  • DirectX: Version 9
  • Storage: 4.7 GB
  • Input: Keyboard and mouse

These are the figures Rockstar publishes for the original listing, not a promise of compatibility with every present-day graphics device or legacy installation. Rockstar cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP cards may be incompatible, and that specifications not listed may not be supported.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas V2.0 - PC
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
  • Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them

The same requirements page says sign-in is required and an internet connection is needed for activation and periodic entitlement verification. It also notes a one-use serial registration limitation and required software components. Steam’s original-game support listing shows Windows 2000/XP-era requirements; that listing should not be confused with Steam client support for Windows 10 and later. Rockstar’s May 2024 requirements page is the direct source for Windows 10 in the original PC listing.

Definitive Edition: published requirements

Rockstar lists these minimum and recommended specifications for San Andreas – The Definitive Edition on its PC requirements page:

Memory 8 GB 16 GB
Graphics NVIDIA GTX 760 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3 GB NVIDIA GTX 970 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 570 4 GB
Storage 45 GB (Rockstar) 45 GB (Rockstar)

Rockstar also requires an account and an internet connection for activation and periodic entitlement verification. Steam’s Definitive Edition listing instead states 19 GB of available storage, so official storefront figures conflict. Check the current requirements on the store you intend to use and leave enough free disk space rather than assuming either figure applies everywhere.

What to check before installing or troubleshooting

  1. Confirm the edition. Check the game’s title in your library or launcher; compare your PC with the matching requirements above.
  2. Check Windows and hardware. The cited Rockstar requirements specify 64-bit Windows 10. For the Definitive Edition, compare your processor, memory and graphics card against its minimum tier; the original’s legacy requirements do not establish compatibility for every newer or integrated graphics chipset.
  3. Check storage at your intended storefront. For the Definitive Edition, Rockstar lists 45 GB while Steam lists 19 GB. Use the current listing for the version you plan to install and ensure adequate free space.
  4. Plan for account and internet checks. Rockstar lists activation and periodic entitlement verification for both editions, so installation or play may require sign-in and an internet connection.
  5. Choose your controls. Rockstar’s original PC requirements list keyboard and mouse. Steam marks the Definitive Edition as having full controller support, so a controller is optional for that edition.

Why Steam’s Windows information can be confusing

Steam’s old listing for the original game presents Windows 2000/XP-era system requirements, while a separate Steam client compatibility statement concerns the client software. Neither should be treated as the current Windows requirement for the game. Rockstar’s own original PC requirements page, updated May 1, 2024, explicitly lists “OS: Windows 10 64 Bit.”

These official requirements establish that Windows 10 64-bit is listed for both editions; they do not establish that every legacy copy, graphics chipset or individual PC will run trouble-free. The original classic edition’s current sale availability may also vary by country; the cited requirements do not confirm regional availability.
