Yes. You can play the official Android-based Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a Chromebook if Google Play offers the app for that specific device. The Chromebook version is Bedrock—not Java Edition—and it is not available on every Chromebook. Check Play Store compatibility before buying.
Which Minecraft edition works on a Chromebook?
The official consumer app for compatible Chromebooks is Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, distributed through Google Play. Google announced the Chromebook release on June 7, 2023; that launch announcement is not a guarantee that every model is supported today. Google’s Chromebook announcement

Bedrock is the edition for playing with friends on supported Bedrock platforms, including mobile devices, consoles, and Windows. Java Edition players generally cannot join a Bedrock multiplayer session. The Chromebook app is not Java Edition, the Windows PC version of Bedrock, Minecraft Education, a browser game, or cloud streaming. Minecraft’s edition information
How to check whether your Chromebook is compatible
The most reliable practical test is the Google Play Store on the Chromebook itself. Play Store support is necessary, but it does not guarantee that Minecraft will be listed as installable: hardware compatibility, ChromeOS support, account or regional restrictions, and administrator policies can affect availability. Do not rely on a general rule based on a Chromebook’s age or brand.

#1 Best Overall
- Collectible figurine inside the grip and a multi-layered design featuring iconic game scenes
- Built-in, rechargeable battery and a 30-foot wireless range
- Expertly designed for all-day comfort and long-lasting performance
- Brighten your gameplay with LED lighting effects that you can change using the ABXY buttons
- Officially licensed by Nintendo and Mojang Studios
- Open the Google Play Store on the Chromebook and search for Minecraft.
- Check that the listing is the official Minecraft app from Mojang/Microsoft. If it offers an install or purchase option, the store is indicating availability for that device and account.
- If the app is marked incompatible or does not appear, check that ChromeOS is up to date and that Google Play is enabled.
- If it is a school- or work-managed Chromebook, ask the administrator whether Android apps and Minecraft are allowed.
- Before buying a Chromebook for the game, test the exact model in Google Play if possible; a similar model name is not enough to establish compatibility.
Google’s original announcement referred to compatible Chromebooks and identified devices launched in the preceding three years at that time. That historical statement is not a current device list. A Minecraft Feedback post describes ongoing user reports of Chromebook compatibility or whitelist blocks, but it is community feedback rather than an official list of supported models. How to install Minecraft Bedrock
- Update ChromeOS: open Settings, select About ChromeOS, and check for updates. Labels can vary slightly by ChromeOS version.
- Confirm that Google Play Store is available. In Settings, look under Apps for Google Play Store or Android app settings.
- Open Google Play Store and search for Minecraft.
- Select the official Minecraft app published by Mojang/Microsoft, then buy or install it if the listing allows.
- Open Minecraft from the app launcher. Sign in with a Microsoft account if you want connected features such as online multiplayer, cross-play, or Realms.
- Select Play to create or load a world.

Do you have to buy Minecraft again?
It depends on where you bought it. The Chromebook app comes through Google Play, so check the listing while signed in to the Google account used for any Android Minecraft purchase. Google said existing Android owners using the same Google account could receive a discounted Chromebook version. The current price or discount is not established here; the live Play Store listing controls and can vary by account and region. Google’s Chromebook announcement
A Minecraft purchase for Windows, macOS, or Linux does not automatically grant the Google Play Chromebook app. A Microsoft account can connect player features across platforms, but that does not make licenses from different storefronts interchangeable. If you bought the PC bundle, check the scope of that purchase rather than assuming it covers the Chromebook app. Minecraft Help: buying for Windows, macOS, or Linux

Can Chromebook players play with friends?
Yes, the Chromebook app is Bedrock, so it can play with friends using supported Bedrock versions on other platforms. Cross-play is Bedrock-to-Bedrock; Java Edition is a separate edition and does not normally join the same session. The Chromebook release announcement includes cross-play, Marketplace content, and Realms. Realms requires the relevant subscription, and multiplayer access can also depend on account settings, platform rules, and network conditions. Google’s Chromebook announcement

Single-player Survival and Creative worlds are available in the app. Bedrock also supports content such as Marketplace items and add-ons, though these are not the same as Java mods. Controller input is supported; touchscreen controls depend on the device, and keyboard-and-mouse behavior can differ from the Windows version. Minecraft’s edition information

There is no single Chromebook frame rate or settings level to promise. Performance depends on the processor and graphics, memory, resolution, available storage, heat, render distance, and what else is running. A Chromebook that installs the game may still deliver a poor experience, particularly under heavy multitasking or on entry-level hardware. Windows PC requirements published by Minecraft are not a Chromebook certification or performance guarantee.
- Close unnecessary Chrome tabs and Android apps, then restart the Chromebook if play is sluggish.
- Lower render distance and graphics settings if camera movement or local gameplay stutters.
- Keep free storage for the game, updates, and saved worlds.
- Try a new local world to distinguish local performance problems from multiplayer connection lag. Low frame rate affects movement and camera response; network lag affects online response, and both can occur together.
- Try a compatible controller if trackpad or keyboard controls feel awkward.
What if Google Play says the device is incompatible?
An incompatible result can reflect the Chromebook’s hardware or Android compatibility, outdated software, a managed-device restriction, or account and regional availability. Having Google Play for other apps does not prove Minecraft is supported. Update ChromeOS, restart, confirm Play Store access, and check the exact model and account. On a managed Chromebook, the administrator controls whether you can install the game. If you believe a recently supported device is incorrectly blocked, contact Minecraft or Google support.
Do not treat an unofficial APK as a dependable fix. It may not work correctly, can expose the device to security risks, and does not change the app’s underlying compatibility status.
Can you play Java Edition on a Chromebook?
Java Edition is not the official consumer Chromebook app. Minecraft offers Java downloads for Linux, so a technically inclined user may be able to run Java Edition through ChromeOS’s Linux environment on suitable hardware. That is a different setup from installing Bedrock in Google Play; Linux support, processor architecture, and performance can all affect whether it is practical. Java is the more relevant choice for Java-only servers and Java modding, but it is not automatically the better choice for a Chromebook. Minecraft downloads
Is Minecraft Education an alternative?
Minecraft Education is a separate product for classroom and learning use, with its own features and licensing. It is not a free substitute for consumer Bedrock or a way to unlock the regular consumer game. Its Chromebook requirements include ChromeOS 83 or newer and a device that supports Play Store apps; schools or organizations may need to provide access. Minecraft Education licensing
