Yes—but not automatically. Some Minecraft turn-based RPG mods are built for cooperative play, while others need a server-side setting changed or work only in a particular mod-loader and Minecraft-version combination. For a successful session, every player and the server must use the release’s supported Minecraft version, loader, dependencies, mod files and multiplayer configuration.
What “multiplayer support” means for turn-based Minecraft mods
A mod can advertise multiplayer support in several different ways. It may add simultaneous cooperative battles, allow several players to enter the same dungeon, or merely avoid crashing when more than one person joins a world. Those are not equivalent experiences.

For a turn-based RPG, the important question is whether the mod’s battle state is shared correctly. When one player selects an action, the server must keep the turn order, enemies, effects and rewards synchronized for everyone. A project that works in single-player may therefore need a special server configuration before its combat system functions in a hosted world.
The projects below illustrate the range. Soulbound: Turnbattle is the clearest match for a cooperative turn-based RPG session because its project description explicitly advertises co-op battles. TurnBasedMC documents a multiplayer setup that requires changing the server configuration. Turn Based Combat is listed for Fabric 1.20.1 and describes itself as suitable for solo and multiplayer adventures. DungeonRPG supports multiplayer dungeons and companions, although its combat model is not presented as a strict turn-by-turn system.

Which mods are the best fit for playing with friends?

The table is a starting point, not a guarantee that any two projects can be combined. A mod’s multiplayer label applies to the release and environment documented by its maintainers. Check the current project page before installing, especially when a listing has moved development to a newer Minecraft version.
Soulbound: Turnbattle: the most direct co-op answer
Soulbound: Turnbattle’s project description calls it a turn-based RPG overhaul and states: “Multiplayer support featuring co-op battles which support an unlimited amount of players.” That is the strongest direct evidence for friends joining the same turn-based battle rather than merely sharing an exploration world.

The host still has to account for the computer, server software, network connection and the rest of the modpack. Start with a short encounter and add players gradually before committing a long-running world to the setup.
Choose the maintained release, not just the familiar version
The CurseForge listing says Soulbound’s 1.20.1 version is no longer being updated and directs users to the 1.21.1 version and current Modrinth releases. That means a friend who finds an older 1.20.1 file may be looking at a frozen branch rather than the project’s active development line.

Agree on one release before anyone creates a world. Write down the Minecraft version, loader, Soulbound file version and any listed dependencies. If one person installs the newer release while another keeps the old 1.20.1 file, the clients are not a compatible party even if their launchers both display “Soulbound.”
TurnBasedMC: why the server configuration matters
TurnBasedMC’s documentation makes an unusually important distinction between local and networked play: “server config must be changed on the server side for it to take effect.” It further explains that local single-player uses the local configuration, while multiplayer setups require the server configuration to be changed on the server side.
In practice, changing a value in your own client’s configuration file is not enough when you join a dedicated server. The server has its own configuration directory and that copy controls the multiplayer world. If the host edits only a client file, players may see ordinary real-time behavior, a mismatch error, or a world that loads without the intended turn system.
Who needs to edit what?
- Dedicated-server host: Install the supported TurnBasedMC release and apply the documented configuration change in the server’s configuration. Restart the server after saving it.
- Players: Install the same Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge family, TurnBasedMC release and required dependencies that the server expects.
- LAN host: Treat the host’s integrated server as the authoritative side. A local-world setting can affect the host, but the project’s multiplayer requirement still means the server-side configuration must be correct for connected players.
- Everyone: Join only after the host has tested one encounter. Do not build a large campaign around a configuration that has not been verified.
TurnBasedMC is listed for Forge and NeoForge. That is separate from Fabric-based projects, so a Fabric profile cannot be assumed to load it simply because both profiles use the same Minecraft release number.

Version and loader matching: the non-negotiable checks
Minecraft mod compatibility is a four-way match: the game version, loader family, mod release and dependency set. A fifth factor—server configuration—becomes decisive for projects such as TurnBasedMC.
- Confirm the Minecraft release. Compare the exact number in every launcher profile and in the server startup configuration. “1.20” is not precise enough when a project lists 1.20.1.
- Confirm the loader family. Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are different environments. TurnBasedMC lists Forge/NeoForge, while Turn Based Combat is listed for Fabric 1.20.1.
- Confirm the mod file version. Do not mix a client’s newer file with an older server file, or substitute a similarly named fork without checking its project page.
- Install every required dependency. Follow the release’s dependency list on both the server and clients whenever the project requires it. DungeonRPG’s listing specifically identifies Fabric Loader and Fabric API requirements.
- Check the project’s current release notice. Soulbound’s notice about its 1.20.1 branch demonstrates why an old search result may not represent the maintained version.
A launcher profile that starts successfully is not proof of multiplayer compatibility. It only shows that that particular local set of files can launch. The server and every connecting client must pass the same checks.

Use a small test world before opening a permanent server. This isolates installation errors from world-generation, progression or performance problems.
- Pick one project and one release. Decide whether you want Soulbound’s explicitly advertised co-op battles, TurnBasedMC’s configurable server combat, Fabric 1.20.1 testing with Turn Based Combat, or DungeonRPG’s shared dungeons and companions.
- Record the compatibility line. Note the Minecraft version, loader, mod version and dependencies in a message everyone can copy exactly.
- Prepare the server. Install the server-side files required by the project. For TurnBasedMC, change the documented server configuration rather than relying on a client-only edit.
- Prepare every client identically. Use matching files and loader profiles. Remove duplicate or older copies that could cause the launcher to select the wrong release.
- Start with one short encounter. Have two players join, trigger combat, take turns, defeat an enemy and collect the result. Confirm that both players see the same turn order and battle outcome.
- Add the remaining party. If the first test succeeds, invite more players one at a time. Soulbound advertises support for an unlimited amount of players, but a staged test reveals practical limits imposed by the particular server and modpack.
- Back up the test world. Keep the clean copy until the group has completed several sessions. A backup gives the host a recovery point if a configuration change or incompatible update damages progression.
LAN worlds, dedicated servers and hosted servers
LAN or an opened single-player world
A LAN world is still multiplayer from the mod’s point of view: the host’s game runs an integrated server that other players join. Everyone must use compatible client files, and any setting documented as server-side must be applied to the host’s server configuration. A local option that works for the host alone does not prove that connected players will receive the same combat rules.

Dedicated server
A dedicated server separates the authoritative world from the players’ launchers. This is the clearest arrangement for TurnBasedMC because the host can edit and restart the server configuration explicitly. Keep a copy of the configuration with the modpack notes so that a replacement host can reproduce the setup.
Third-party hosting
With a hosted server, access to the configuration directory depends on the host’s control panel or file access. Before paying for a long-running world, verify that you can install the required loader, upload the exact mod release and edit the server-side configuration. If the host prevents those actions, a project that depends on a server setting may not be usable there.

Do not “fix” a mismatch by downloading random similarly named files. Mod pages can contain old releases, forks and files for different loaders. The exact release notes are the authority for that installation.

Do not use DungeonRPG’s multiplayer support as proof that every turn-based combat mod will work beside it. Different projects may alter entities, world data, progression or battle events in incompatible ways. Test combinations in a disposable world and verify that each project supports the same Minecraft release and loader before adding them to a campaign.

It is worth it when the group agrees on a single supported environment and the host can control the server configuration. Soulbound is the simplest choice when the goal is explicitly cooperative turn-based battles. TurnBasedMC is viable when the host is comfortable applying its server-side setting and maintaining a Forge or NeoForge server. Fabric users should evaluate projects such as Turn Based Combat on the exact listed 1.20.1 profile, while DungeonRPG suits groups that value shared dungeons and companions more than a pure turn system.
The cost of skipping the compatibility test is higher than the time required to run one. A short two-player encounter can reveal a loader mismatch, missing dependency or server-only setting before the group invests in a permanent world. Once that test passes, preserve the working files and configuration; updating one component mid-campaign can recreate the same incompatibility.
Bottom line for playing with friends
Yes, Minecraft turn-based RPG mods can support friends, but multiplayer is project-specific. Soulbound: Turnbattle explicitly advertises cooperative battles for an unlimited number of players. TurnBasedMC supports multiplayer only after the server-side configuration is changed. Turn Based Combat targets Fabric 1.20.1 multiplayer adventures, and DungeonRPG offers shared dungeons and companions with a different combat emphasis. Match the Minecraft version, loader, mod release, dependencies and server settings for everyone, then prove the setup with a small co-op encounter before starting the real world.
