Activision has published a continuous-internet requirement for Multiplayer (including Private Matches) and DMZ, but its current Editions FAQ does not explicitly say whether Campaign can launch and remain playable with no connection. The safest assumption is that you will need internet for installation, updates, account authentication and dependable access, while the exact offline behavior of Campaign remains unconfirmed.
What Activision has actually confirmed
Activision’s Editions FAQ for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 says: “This means you’ll need a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer (including in Private Matches) and DMZ.” That is a clear rule for the online portions of the game. It is not a statement that Campaign definitely requires a connection, nor is it an offline-Campaign guarantee.

The distinction matters. It would be inaccurate to turn the Multiplayer and DMZ sentence into “the single-player campaign cannot work offline.” At the same time, it would be equally risky to promise that a player can disconnect after installing the game and complete the story without interruption. Activision’s current public information leaves that specific question open.

PlayStation requires an Activision account, and Xbox and PlayStation product pages describe account and subscription requirements for their online services. None of those pages publishes a direct, platform-specific statement that Campaign will operate indefinitely without internet.

What you should expect to need internet for
- Downloading or installing the game: A digital purchase obviously requires a connection, and a physical disc may still need a large update or additional content before the complete game is available.
- Updates and patches: Launch-day files, security changes, bug fixes and content updates can be separate from the data on a disc or the first digital download.
- Account authentication: PlayStation documentation requires an Activision account. Other platforms may also ask you to sign in or link accounts during setup.
- Online modes: Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ have Activision’s explicit continuous-connection rule.
- Social and platform services: Friends, invitations, cross-platform features and other connected functions depend on the platform network even when you are not playing a competitive match.
These requirements do not prove that every Campaign session must remain online. They do mean that “I have the disc” or “the game is installed” is not enough evidence that a trip without Wi-Fi will work.

Do you need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass for the story?
Activision’s FAQ describes PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential and Nintendo Switch Online as requirements for social features and online modes on the relevant consoles. The Xbox product page specifically says Online Multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, while the PlayStation page says Online Multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus.
Those statements apply to online services. They do not describe either subscription as a Campaign subscription. A player could therefore have access to the story without paying for the console’s multiplayer service, but the available documentation still does not guarantee that Campaign can be started or played with the console disconnected. Subscription status and internet status are separate questions.

How to prepare before going offline
If you need the best chance of playing during travel, an outage or a location without Wi-Fi, complete every known online dependency before disconnecting. This procedure cannot convert an unconfirmed feature into a guarantee, but it removes avoidable setup failures.
- Install the complete game while connected. On console, insert the disc or start the digital download and allow the installation to finish. On PC, install to an SSD with at least 115 GB of available space, as specified in the official requirements.
- Apply every available update. Leave the console or PC connected until the launcher reports that no further game update is pending. A disc may contain an earlier build than the current release.
- Complete account linking. Sign in to the platform account and the required Activision account. On PlayStation, account linking is part of the documented requirements. If the game asks for a phone number linked to the Activision account, complete that verification while you have service.
- Start Campaign once online. Reach the Campaign menu and, if possible, load a mission or create a save. This confirms that the installed build can pass its initial checks before you leave a reliable network.
- Test with a controlled disconnect. Close the game, disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then start it again. Record exactly what happens: whether the launcher opens, whether the Campaign menu appears, and whether a saved mission loads.
- Reconnect before changing files or accounts. If the test fails, restore the connection before signing out, reinstalling or deleting data. Repeated attempts while offline can make diagnosis harder and may leave an update incomplete.
A successful test on one console, account or game version is useful evidence for that setup, not a universal Activision promise. An update, account change or server-side policy can alter launch behavior later.
What the launch dates mean for access
Activision lists a worldwide launch date of October 23, 2026. Digital preorders or prepurchases receive full Campaign Early Access beginning Friday, October 16, Pacific Time. Early Access changes when an eligible buyer can start the story; it does not change the published uncertainty around offline operation. Physical editions are documented for PS5 and Xbox Series X, but their availability does not imply that a disc-only installation bypasses updates or authentication.

PC-specific requirements that affect offline plans
The official Call of Duty PC requirements list broadband internet in all three configurations: minimum, recommended and ray tracing. They also call for a 115 GB SSD, plus TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. These are requirements for running the PC edition, not a published promise that the Campaign itself streams continuously or must stay online.

A machine that meets the graphics or processor requirements can still fail to start if security settings or account checks are incomplete.
Why texture streaming does not answer the Campaign question
Activision links its continuous-connection rule to the way the game uses texture streaming, but the quoted rule is specifically for Multiplayer (including Private Matches) and DMZ. It does not say that Campaign uses the same delivery path, and it does not say that Campaign is fully self-contained on the disc or SSD. Texture-streaming language therefore explains the online requirement for those modes without resolving the single-player case.

Common situations and the safest interpretation
“I only want the story and never play multiplayer.”
You do not need to purchase a multiplayer subscription merely because you want Campaign; the subscription statements concern online multiplayer and social functions. You should still plan an internet connection for installation, updates and authentication, and you should regard continued offline access as unconfirmed.
“Can I put the disc in at a cabin with no Wi-Fi?”
The disc may provide installation data, but it does not prove that the final build, account check and Campaign launch are available offline. Install, patch and perform an offline test at home before relying on the game at the cabin.

“My internet is down after the game is installed.”
Campaign may or may not open depending on the platform, build and current authentication policy. Multiplayer and DMZ will not meet Activision’s continuous-connection requirement during the outage. If the story fails to launch, reconnecting is the supported recovery rather than repeatedly reinstalling an already installed copy.
“Does Private Match count as offline?”
No. Activision explicitly includes Private Matches in the continuous-internet rule for Multiplayer. A private lobby is still an online mode for this requirement.
How to troubleshoot a failed offline launch
- Reconnect and finish updates: A pending patch is the first thing to rule out, especially after a disc installation.
- Check account status: Confirm that the platform account and Activision account are linked and that you are using the account that owns the game.
- Check PC security settings: Verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot if you are on PC, along with the 115 GB SSD requirement.
- Restart after authentication: Launch once online, exit normally, then retry the offline test. Do not assume that leaving the game suspended is equivalent to an offline launch.
- Use the platform’s support path: If an online launch works but the offline test consistently fails, ask Activision or the platform holder whether that edition has an offline-Campaign policy. The public FAQ currently does not answer it directly.
Bottom line for buyers
Modern Warfare 4 is not documented as a guaranteed offline Campaign game. Activision explicitly requires continuous internet for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ. For Campaign, the responsible answer is “not confirmed”: expect internet for installation, updates and account authentication, and test your own fully updated setup before depending on it without Wi-Fi. PlayStation Plus and Game Pass Essential are tied to online multiplayer, while a physical disc on PS5 or Xbox Series X does not, by itself, establish offline story access.
