Yes. Most Nintendo DS games work on Nintendo 3DS family systems, but a few exceptions matter: games that need an accessory in the DS or DS Lite Game Boy Advance (GBA) slot will not work, and some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not work on a PAL-region 3DS. Check the exact title and its region before buying.
Which DS games work on a 3DS?
Nintendo says that most Nintendo DS games are compatible with Nintendo 3DS family systems. Compatibility is not universal: certain DS games rely on an accessory inserted into the GBA slot found on the original Nintendo DS and DS Lite, which the 3DS family does not have. Nintendo’s overview describes these as exceptions to general DS-game compatibility: Nintendo Support: DS and DSi game compatibility.
There is also a region-related caveat for DSi software. Nintendo UK warns that some DSi games purchased outside the PAL region may not work on a PAL-region 3DS. This warning concerns DSi games; it is not a blanket statement that every imported DS card is incompatible. For a specific title, check its packaging, manual, or title-specific support information.
How to start a DS game on a 3DS
- Insert the Nintendo DS or DSi game card into the 3DS game-card slot.
- On the HOME Menu, tap the game’s icon.
- Tap Open to launch it.
These are the startup instructions in Nintendo’s Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual. DS and DSi game cards are supported; Nintendo 3DS game cards are not playable on DS-family systems, so confirm that a used listing is actually for a DS or DSi card.

What DS games look and feel like on a 3DS
DS and DSi software runs in 2D, not 3D, and its image has a lower resolution than 3DS software. By default, the picture is stretched to fit the 3DS screens. To display it at its original screen-size ratio instead, hold START or SELECT while launching the game, as described in the 3DS operations manual.
While a DS or DSi game is running, you cannot open the HOME Menu. StreetPass and SpotPass are also unavailable for DS and DSi software.

Can you play DS games wirelessly with other systems?
Wireless features depend on the individual game. Nintendo’s Download Play guidance says a 3DS can use Download Play with Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL systems. What to check before buying a used DS game
- Confirm the platform: the listing should say Nintendo DS or DSi, not Nintendo 3DS.
- Check for a GBA-slot accessory: avoid assuming compatibility if the game needs an accessory inserted into the original DS or DS Lite’s GBA slot.
- Check region for DSi titles: some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not work on a PAL-region 3DS.
