Yes. Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch, but not every title is guaranteed to work fully. If a particular game matters to you, check Nintendo’s current title-by-title compatibility listing before buying a console or game.
How Switch 2 backwards compatibility works
Nintendo supports compatible Nintendo Switch game cards and digital games on Switch 2. The format alone does not guarantee full functionality: Nintendo warns that hardware differences mean some games may not be supported or may not work completely. Nintendo does not state an overall compatibility percentage for the full Switch library.

Will digital games and saves transfer?
Compatible digital Switch games are playable on Switch 2. Game saves are a separate matter from game storage: Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory, not on a microSD Express card. For account, software and accessory details, consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ and the compatibility overview.
Some Switch games have updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2 that add content or improve performance. These are title-specific; check the publisher’s current terms rather than assuming an upgrade exists or is free.

Does your old microSD card work?
No, not as Switch 2 game storage. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for downloadable software, updates, DLC and captured media. An ordinary microSD card from the original Switch can be used to import screenshots and videos, but not to load or save digital games or saved data. Nintendo’s card compatibility guidance explains the distinction.
Nintendo states a maximum capacity of up to 2 TB for a microSD Express card; the card is sold separately. Nintendo also says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used. Save data remains in system memory, not on the card. See Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ.

Will your original Joy-Con work?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but they do not attach to the new system. They also need the original Switch or a compatible older charging accessory for charging. Some games and accessories rely on features or physical attachment that Joy-Con 2 does not provide, so check the game’s compatibility entry and Nintendo’s accessory guidance before relying on an old controller.
Quick Recap
What to check before you buy
- Search Nintendo’s compatibility listing for the game title or publisher name, and read any title-specific notes.
- Check how you play. If the game depends on original Joy-Con or a particular accessory, confirm that setup will work for you.
- Plan storage separately. Keep an old microSD card for importing captured media if needed; use microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage.
- Check upgrade terms per game. An update or paid upgrade may be available, but neither availability nor price is universal.
