Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics is included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The base Nintendo Switch Online plan does not include the GBA collection. Your Nintendo Account must be the account that holds an active Expansion Pack membership, or a member of the Nintendo Switch family group with access to that membership.

The Nintendo Classics application and game data
Install the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application while the Switch is connected to the internet. Open the application and download any games you want available during the trip. A game that has never been downloaded to the console should not be treated as available offline; the initial access and content download require a connection.
A successful online check-in
Launch the application, or otherwise allow the service to check your membership, shortly before you leave. Nintendo’s official wording is: “Games can be played while you are offline, but you must have an active membership and verify your membership every seven days by connecting online.” The seven-day period is a recurring requirement, not a one-time activation.
How the seven-day offline window works
The Switch does not need to contact Nintendo every day. Once the membership check succeeds, the console can start the downloaded GBA games without a live connection until that verification window expires.

Example travel timeline
- At home: Connect the Switch to the internet, sign in to the Nintendo Account, and confirm the account has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- Before departure: Open the GBA Nintendo Classics application and make sure the games you want are installed. Let the application complete its online check.
- Days one through seven: Play downloaded games in airplane mode or anywhere without Wi‑Fi. Single-player progress is available locally.
- By the end of the window: Connect the Switch to the internet again and allow membership verification to renew. If you remain offline beyond the window, the service may refuse to start the classics application or its games until a check succeeds.

What works without Wi‑Fi
Single-player games
Downloaded GBA titles can be played offline for their local single-player modes. This includes starting a game, loading local save data, and continuing a campaign while the console is disconnected, provided the membership check is still within its seven-day window.
Save data
Your save data remains on the Switch when you play offline. If the membership lapses, Nintendo says the classic games become inaccessible to that account, but the saved data is retained and can be used again if you renew the membership and regain access. Do not interpret a launch failure after expiration as automatic save deletion.

Local play where a game supports it
Some classics support local multiplayer or other local modes. Those modes are different from Nintendo’s internet-based services: a supported local connection between nearby consoles may work without an internet connection, while the exact game and mode determine whether local play is available. Check the individual game’s listed features before relying on it for a trip.

What still requires an internet connection
Online multiplayer
Playing against or with people over Nintendo’s online service requires an active internet connection, even when the game itself is installed. Offline authorization does not turn an online match into a local one.
Voice chat and network functions
Voice chat and other network features also remain online-only. A game can be playable offline for its solo content while its matchmaking, rankings, cloud-connected functions, or communications features are unavailable.

Membership verification and new downloads
The console must reconnect to verify the membership at least every seven days. Downloading the Nintendo Classics application, obtaining a new game, or restoring content that is not currently installed likewise requires internet access. If you expect to be offline for an extended period, install everything before leaving.
Base Nintendo Switch Online versus Expansion Pack
The subscription choice is the most common reason a reader cannot access GBA games. The two tiers do not provide the same classic-game libraries.

Buying a GBA cartridge, a Switch game card, or a controller does not provide access to the Nintendo Classics catalog. The entitlement comes from the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

Step-by-step preparation for a flight or other offline trip
- Connect to a reliable network. Use the Switch’s internet settings and wait until the console reports that the connection test succeeded.
- Check the account. Open the Nintendo Account or Nintendo Switch Online membership information and confirm that the account you will use has an active Expansion Pack membership. If the console has multiple users, select the user tied to that entitlement.
- Install the application. Download the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application from the Nintendo eShop while online.
- Download the games. Open the application and install each title you intend to play. Start each one once if you want to confirm that the download and local launch are working.
- Complete the verification. With the console still online, launch the application and let its membership check finish. A successful check starts the seven-day offline period.
- Test the travel setup. Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi‑Fi, then start a downloaded game. Testing at home exposes an account, storage, or download problem while you can still reconnect.
- Plan the return connection. If the trip could last seven days or more, identify when and where the Switch can connect again. A brief connection is needed to renew verification; it is not enough to carry the console offline indefinitely.

Troubleshooting an offline launch failure
The application says a membership is required
Reconnect the Switch and confirm that the active plan is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not the base tier. Also check that you selected the Nintendo Account that owns the membership or receives it through the family group. Renewing an expired membership restores eligibility, but the console still needs to connect and verify the renewed status.
The game is missing from the application
Go online and download the title before leaving. A game visible in the catalog is not necessarily stored locally. Check the application’s download state and allow the installation to finish on the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD card.
The seven-day period has passed
Connect the Switch to the internet, open the Nintendo Classics application, and wait for membership verification to complete. After a successful check, offline play should be available again for the next verification window, assuming the membership remains active.

That is expected when the console is offline. Reconnect for online multiplayer, voice chat, rankings, or another network-dependent function. Offline authorization covers access to the downloaded classic, not every service attached to it.
Save data seems unavailable after a lapse
Membership expiration blocks access to the classic application but does not erase the local save data according to Nintendo’s support information. Renew the Expansion Pack membership, reconnect for verification, and then reopen the game with the same Nintendo Account and user profile.
Important limits to keep in mind
- Offline does not mean permanent ownership. The GBA catalog is a membership benefit, so access lasts only while the Expansion Pack membership is active and verification remains current.
- The check is account-based. Switching to a user without the qualifying membership can prevent access even on the same console.
- Downloaded content is necessary but not sufficient. Installation cannot replace the recurring online membership check.
- Seven days is the published interval. Treat it as a maximum planning window and reconnect early if the exact expiration time is uncertain.
- Feature support varies by game. Offline single-player access is distinct from local wireless, online multiplayer, voice chat, and other modes listed for an individual title.
Bottom line for travelers
For a plane ride or another short period without Wi‑Fi, Nintendo Switch Online GBA games work offline when the games are downloaded, the console has recently verified an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and the seven-day window has not expired. You can continue local single-player progress and retain save data. You cannot use online multiplayer or other network features without internet, and a trip longer than seven days requires a connection to verify the membership again.
