Nintendo Switch Sports tennis can be played online with friends through the game’s Play with Friends option. Every player joining an internet session needs an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without that membership, Nintendo says Play Globally offers only a trial competition against computer-controlled opponents, not a normal friend match.
You will also need a supported Joy-Con setup and a television-based console mode: Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Voice chat is available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, while Nintendo Switch 2 also supports chatting through GameChat.

What you need for online tennis with friends
Before opening the game, check these requirements:
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Tennis is one of the sports available in the game.
- Play with Friends: This is the online menu for arranging a session with people on your friends list.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership: Nintendo states that membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. The requirement applies to internet friend play, not merely to the person who creates the room.
- A supported console mode: Handheld Mode is not supported. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Compatible Joy-Con controllers: Supported controller types vary by sport. Nintendo’s FAQ specifically says Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports.
The game and membership solve different parts of the problem. Owning the game lets you access tennis; Nintendo Switch Online authorizes the online connection. If a player lacks the membership, that player cannot join the ordinary online friend session even if the other participants are subscribed.

#1 Best Overall
- Swing your racket, pull back and aim like an archer, and more in 12 sports with intuitive motion controls
- Move together with friends and family** in sports like Boxing, Archery, Bowling, and Basketball, battle with one thumb to hand your opponent a defeat in Thumb Wrestling, and more
- Explore the island getaway using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in Skateboarding, steer across the waves in Power Cruising, and tilt the controller to fly around freely in Prop Plane
- Enjoy all kinds of sports on Nintendo Switch 2 as either a Sportsmate or a Mii character you create
- Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive Games: This game is only playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Prepare each console in TV Mode. Place the console in its dock and play on a television. Handheld Mode is not supported for Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Connect compatible Joy-Con controllers. Use the controller arrangement supported for tennis. Do not plan on using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; Nintendo lists it as incompatible.
- Confirm Nintendo Switch Online membership. Each person who will play online needs an active membership on the Nintendo Account used for the session.
- Open Nintendo Switch Sports. From the game’s main screen, choose Play with Friends, rather than the global-play option.
- Arrange the friend session. Use the friend-session controls to create or join the group. The exact people available to invite depend on the friends connected to each player’s Nintendo Account.
- Select tennis and begin the match. Once the group is assembled, choose tennis and follow the on-screen prompts to start play.
If the game only offers a computer-opponent trial, check the menu you selected and the membership status on the account attempting to play. Nintendo describes that limited experience under Play Globally; it is not a substitute for a subscribed friend session.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for Switch Sports?
Yes, for online play. Nintendo’s FAQ states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” That means tennis against friends over the internet is a subscription-gated feature.
What happens without the membership?
Without an active membership, Nintendo says Play Globally provides a trial competition against computer competitors. It does not provide the regular online friend-room experience described by Play with Friends. A player who wants to participate in a remote friend match should resolve the membership issue before trying to join.

Internet play versus local play
The membership requirement is tied to internet play. Nintendo also documents a separate LAN Play mode for consoles connected on a wired local network. LAN Play is intended for players whose consoles are together on the same local network, so it is a different setup from inviting a friend who is playing at home elsewhere.
Voice chat while playing tennis
Voice chat is available in Play with Friends through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. Nintendo says the app requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, so the chat service does not remove the subscription requirement for online play.
How the smartphone-app chat works
- Make sure each participant has the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app available on a compatible phone.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account associated with the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Start or join the Nintendo Switch Sports friend session through Play with Friends.
- Use the app’s voice-chat feature while the game session is active, following the app’s prompts for microphone and audio permissions.
Keep the phone nearby while playing so the app can capture your voice and deliver other players’ audio. The game’s voice-chat availability does not mean that every Nintendo Switch controller includes a microphone; the chat path Nintendo documents is the smartphone app.
Age restriction
Nintendo says accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use voice chat. Those players can still be affected by the game’s broader communication and account settings, but the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone-app voice-chat feature is not available to an account under that age threshold.
Nintendo Switch 2 and GameChat
Nintendo also says Nintendo Switch 2 supports chatting through GameChat. On Nintendo Switch 2, this gives players an additional Nintendo-supported chat option alongside the smartphone-app information above. The console model matters: do not assume that a feature documented for GameChat is available in the same way on an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch – OLED Model.
Controller and display requirements
Why Handheld Mode is not an option
Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Tennis relies on motion-oriented controller use, so Nintendo recommends playing in TV Mode with the console docked. The recommendation applies to the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Which controllers to use
Use compatible Joy-Con controllers and follow the controller orientation shown by the game. Nintendo notes that supported controller types vary by sport, so a setup that works for one sport should not automatically be assumed to work for tennis. Nintendo’s FAQ also states that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
If a friend cannot proceed past the controller screen, check the Joy-Con connection and make sure the console is in TV Mode. Replacing the Joy-Con with a Pro Controller will not solve the problem because that controller is outside the game’s supported controller types.
LAN Play: the local alternative to internet matches
When players are in the same place, Nintendo documents LAN Play for connecting multiple consoles on a wired local network. This avoids the remote-internet arrangement used by Play with Friends.
LAN Play limits
Nintendo’s LAN instructions describe up to four consoles on the local network. Up to two players can play on each console where the sport allows it. The sport-specific wording matters: the two-player-per-console figure is not a promise that every sport and every local arrangement uses two players.
How to reveal the LAN Play menu
- Go to the Nintendo Switch Sports title screen.
- Highlight Play with Friends.
- Hold the L and R buttons.
- While holding those buttons, simultaneously click and hold the Left Stick.
- The menu changes to LAN Play.
- Have one console create a room.
- Use the other consoles to join that room.
- The host starts play once the group is ready.
All participating consoles must be connected to the same wired local network for this mode. LAN Play is therefore useful for a gathering or event, but it does not connect friends across separate homes.

| Room setup | Arrange a friend session through the online friend-play controls. | One host creates a room, other consoles join, and the host starts play. |
| Voice chat | Available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app; Nintendo Switch 2 also supports GameChat. | The LAN instructions do not state a separate LAN voice-chat method. Use only the chat options supported by your console and account. |
| Console count | The cited Nintendo setup information does not state a maximum friend-session console count. | Up to four consoles, with up to two players per console where the sport allows it. |
Troubleshooting common problems
“I can see the game, but my friend cannot join.”
Check that the joining player has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and that both players entered through Play with Friends. A membership on only the host’s account is not a safe assumption for a multi-player online session.
“The only online option is against a computer.”
You are likely in Play Globally without the required membership. Nintendo describes that path as a trial competition against computer competitors. Return to the friend-play menu and verify the membership on the account being used.
“Voice chat does not work.”
- Confirm that you are using Play with Friends, where Nintendo says voice chat is available.
- Check that the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app is signed in to the correct account and has microphone permission.
- Verify that the account is not under age 13; Nintendo does not allow those accounts to use voice chat.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, check whether GameChat is the intended chat method and that the console is using the relevant account and system features.
“The controller is rejected.”
Switch to compatible Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo says controller support varies by sport and explicitly excludes Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers. Also confirm that the console is being used in TV Mode rather than Handheld Mode.
“We are together, but cannot find LAN Play.”
LAN Play is not a separate top-level option immediately visible on the title screen. Highlight Play with Friends, hold L and R, and simultaneously click and hold the Left Stick. The menu should change to LAN Play. Then have one console create the room and the others join it.
Choosing the right mode
Choose Play with Friends when
- The participants are in different homes or otherwise cannot connect their consoles to one local wired network.
- Everyone can use an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- The group wants Nintendo’s documented smartphone-app voice chat, or Nintendo Switch 2 players want to use GameChat.
Choose LAN Play when
- The consoles are physically together and can use the same wired local network.
- You want a host-created room with other consoles joining locally.
- Your group fits Nintendo’s documented limit of up to four consoles, remembering that the two-player-per-console allowance depends on whether the sport supports it.
For a remote tennis match, the short answer remains straightforward: open Play with Friends, use compatible Joy-Con controllers in TV Mode, and make sure every online participant has Nintendo Switch Online.
