You can play disc-based games on a later slim PS5 Digital Edition only after installing Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive, and the console must be one of the compatible model groups. A built-in-drive PS5 works with physical games immediately.
The model-number check is the important part. Sony’s detachable-drive product information identifies slim Digital Edition groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, while the installation guide uses a CFI-2000/7000 grouping. Those references apply to later slim hardware, not automatically to the launch Digital Edition. Read the CFI number on your console before buying an accessory.

What “Digital Edition” means for physical games
The original PS5 Digital Edition is a download-only console for games. Sony’s PlayStation FAQ states: “The PS5 Digital Edition console does not feature a disc drive.” There is therefore no slot into which you can insert a PS5 game disc, PS4 Blu-ray game disc, movie Blu-ray, DVD or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

What you can do without a drive
- Buy a game from the PlayStation Store and download it.
- Download digital PS4 purchases that are compatible with PS5.
- Use digital versions of games included with your account or subscriptions, subject to each title’s licence and availability.
- Play downloaded games offline after the console has completed any required licence checks, according to the game and account settings.
A physical copy remains tied to the disc. Owning the disc does not create a downloadable digital licence that the Digital Edition can use.
Which PS5 Digital Edition models can accept a disc drive?
Sony introduced the detachable drive with the slimmer PS5 design. Before ordering, look for the CFI model identifier printed on the console packaging, the console label or its system information screen. The relevant Sony documents identify the following slim families:

The installation guide refers to CFI-2000/7000 compatibility, whereas the product page names CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim groups. Treat the model number, not the console’s appearance or the words “Digital Edition,” as the deciding evidence. If your CFI number is not explicitly listed in the current Sony instructions for the drive, do not assume that the accessory will fit.
How Sony’s detachable Disc Drive works
The accessory is a replacement side section for compatible slim hardware, not a generic drive that connects by USB. It becomes part of the console after physical installation and an online pairing step. Once installed, Sony lists support for PS5 game discs, supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs.

Installation sequence
Use the instructions supplied with the drive and verify the model first. Sony’s sequence is:
- Turn the console off completely. Do not install the drive while the PS5 is running or in Rest Mode. Unplug the power cable and any other connected cables.
- Remove the slim console’s cover. Follow the guide’s orientation and release points rather than forcing the panel. The detachable drive is designed for the later slim chassis.
- Remove the short feet. The drive package uses a different foot arrangement so the enlarged console sits securely.
- Align and click the Disc Drive into place. Seat the drive along the guide rails until it is fully engaged. A partially seated drive can prevent the cover from fitting.
- Install the supplied cover and long feet. Keep the original cover and short feet in a safe place. You need them if you later remove the drive and return the console to its digital-only configuration.
- Reconnect power and start the PS5. The console detects the accessory and takes you through its pairing process.
- Connect to the internet and complete pairing. An internet connection is required during setup so the console can register the drive. This is a one-time setup requirement for the accessory, but the console may still need normal game or licence updates afterward.
Do not substitute a USB DVD or Blu-ray drive. The cited Sony solution is the detachable accessory designed for the slim console; ordinary external optical drives are not presented as compatible game-disc hardware.
What discs the add-on can read
With a compatible slim Digital Edition and the paired Disc Drive, the console gains the physical-media functions that the drive provides:

- PS5 game discs: Insert the disc to install the game and leave it in the drive whenever the game’s ownership check requires it.
- Supported PS4 game discs: Compatible PS4 titles can be installed and played from disc. PS5 backward compatibility is broad, but compatibility belongs to the individual game, not simply to the existence of a disc drive.
- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD: The accessory also serves as the console’s optical movie drive for these formats.
Installing a game from a disc does not make it permanently digital. If you later remove the disc drive, or eject the disc, the console cannot verify ownership of a disc-based installation.

Can a physical PS4 disc work on a PS5 Digital Edition?
Not without compatible disc hardware. Sony reported that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5 in 2020, but that figure describes game compatibility, not a way for a disc-less console to read a disc. A physical PS4 copy still requires either a PS5 with a built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray drive or a compatible slim Digital Edition fitted with the detachable Disc Drive.
Digital PS4 purchases are different
If you bought a PS4 game digitally, you can download it to a PS5 Digital Edition when that title is supported and remains available to your account. No disc is needed because the licence is digital. The same distinction applies to digital PS5 purchases.
Physical-disc upgrades to PS5 versions
Some publishers offer a PS5 upgrade for owners of a PS4 game. When the offer is based on a physical PS4 disc, Sony says the upgrade path requires a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. A Digital Edition cannot validate that disc, so inserting the disc is impossible on the original model and on a slim model that has not received the compatible drive. Upgrade terms, fees and eligibility are set by the publisher and vary by title.
Do saves transfer between PS4 and PS5 versions?
Disc access and save compatibility are separate questions. A PS4 save may transfer to a PS5 version only when the game’s developer supports that path. Sony identifies save transfer as a title-dependent decision, so do not assume that a physical-disc upgrade—or a move from disc to digital—will automatically carry every save.

Before selling a PS4 disc or deleting its installation, check the game’s official support information for its save-transfer method. Depending on the title, the supported route may involve cloud storage, a local transfer between consoles or an in-game import tool. The console’s ability to read the disc does not itself guarantee cross-generation saves.

If you already own the original Digital Edition
There is no listed Sony detachable-drive upgrade for the launch chassis. Your practical choices are to keep buying digital games, use a second PS5 with a built-in drive for your disc library, or replace the console with a compatible slim model and add the official drive. Check current hardware listings and Sony’s compatibility page before spending money because model availability and accessory pricing change.
If you own a slim Digital Edition
Read the CFI identifier and compare it with the current Disc Drive compatibility instructions. If it matches, budget for the separately sold drive and allow internet access for pairing. Keep the original panels and feet after installation.

If you are buying a PS5 now
Choose a console with a built-in drive if you already have a substantial PS5 or PS4 disc collection, regularly buy used physical games, or want the simplest movie-disc setup. A Digital Edition is appropriate when you are comfortable buying downloads and do not need physical-disc upgrades. A compatible slim Digital Edition plus the add-on drive provides a middle path, but it requires an extra purchase and installation.

Common problems and fixes
The drive will not fit
Stop and recheck the CFI model. The detachable drive is shaped for specified slim groups; forcing it onto the original Digital Edition or another chassis can damage the cover or connector. Confirm that the short feet and the correct cover have been removed before attempting installation again.
The PS5 does not detect the drive
- Power the console down, unplug it and reseat the drive so it clicks fully into position.
- Confirm that the supplied cover and feet are installed in the correct orientation.
- Reconnect the console to the internet and run the setup pairing step.
- Install any available system update, then restart the console.
- If detection still fails, use Sony’s support route for the exact CFI model rather than trying a generic USB optical drive.
A disc installs but the game will not start
Leave the game disc inserted, check that the title supports PS5, and install any required update. For a PS4 disc, verify that the game is among the supported PS4 catalogue. A disc-based installation still needs the physical ownership check.
A PS5 upgrade is unavailable
Check whether the offer applies to that edition and region and whether the publisher requires the original PS4 disc to remain inserted. On a Digital Edition without a compatible drive, a physical-disc upgrade cannot be claimed through the disc-based route.

Physical-release dates and changing policies
Sony’s Disc Drive product page currently includes the statement: “Discs for games released before Jan 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” That wording is a product-page qualification, not a promise that every future release will use a disc or that every disc will be compatible. Physical-release plans, regional editions and accessory availability can change, so check the game’s packaging and Sony’s current support information for releases around or after January 2028.
Prices, stock and retailer bundles are also volatile. Verify the current listing and the exact CFI compatibility before ordering; the drive is sold separately from the slim Digital Edition.
