A PlayStation Plus Monthly Game that you added to your library and downloaded can generally be played without an internet connection while your PlayStation Plus membership remains active. On PS5, turn on Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, activate the console as your primary PS4. If the subscription ends, Sony removes access to Monthly Games obtained at no cost through Plus until the membership is active again.
What “offline” means for a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game
PlayStation Plus Monthly Games are titles Sony makes available to download and play at no extra charge during an active PlayStation Plus membership. Sony adds a new set of Monthly Games each calendar month. The license is attached to your PlayStation Plus entitlement rather than being a permanent purchase.

Offline play works after two conditions are met: you must add the game to your library while it is available as a Monthly Game, and you must download it completely to the console. Once those steps are complete, the console can validate the entitlement locally, provided the correct offline-sharing or primary-console setting is enabled and your membership has not expired.
“Offline” applies to starting and playing the downloaded game. It does not turn online-dependent features into offline features. Multiplayer over the internet, cloud streaming and any mode that requires a server still need a connection.

Requirements before you disconnect
- Active membership: Your PlayStation Plus plan must still be active. Monthly Games are a membership benefit, not a permanent free purchase.
- Game added to your library: Claim or add the title while it is offered as a Monthly Game. A title that was never added is not licensed to your account just because you saw it listed.
- Complete download: Wait for the game and any required base files or updates to finish installing on the PS5 or PS4. Streaming or an unfinished download cannot substitute for an installed copy.
- Console authorization: Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the intended PS5, or activate the intended PS4 as your primary PS4.
- Local access to the account: Use the PlayStation user profile that holds the active Plus membership, or a profile covered by the authorized console’s sharing rules.
Do these checks while you still have an internet connection. That gives the console an opportunity to refresh the license and complete installation before you travel or lose service.
How to enable offline play on PS5
On PS5, the relevant control is called Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony says that when it is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play your games and media even when the console is offline and can use some PlayStation Plus benefits.
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account that owns the PlayStation Plus membership and the Monthly Game.
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable if the setting is currently disabled.
- While connected, open your game library, confirm the Monthly Game is shown as owned or available to play, and finish the download and installation.
- Test the title after temporarily disconnecting the PS5 from the internet or by using the console’s offline state. Start a single-player mode before you leave your network.
Only one PS5 can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for a particular account at a time. Enabling it on a different PS5 changes which console receives that offline-sharing authorization. If a second PS5 shows a padlock, check which console currently has the setting enabled.

PS4 uses different terminology. Activate the console as your account’s primary PS4. Sony’s sharing rules list downloaded Monthly Games among the benefits that can be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play and one PS4 activated as the primary PS4.
- Sign in on the PS4 with the Plus account that claimed the Monthly Game.
- Open Settings, then Account Management.
- Select Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Choose Activate if the console is not already primary for that account.
- Add the Monthly Game to your library while online, download it fully and launch its offline-capable mode once.
An account can have only one primary PS4 at a time. Deactivating that console or activating another PS4 changes which system is authorized for sharing and offline use. If you bought a used console or changed hardware, verify the activation status rather than assuming the previous owner’s setting applies.
Monthly Games versus the Game Catalog
Not every game displayed inside PlayStation Plus follows the Monthly Games license. Extra and Premium plans also include catalog titles, and those games remain playable only while you have the corresponding tier and the title remains in the catalog.
| Case | What you need | What can end access | Offline implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Game | Add it to your library, download it and keep any PlayStation Plus membership active. | Your Plus membership expires. Sony removes access to content obtained at no cost through the subscription. | A fully downloaded, licensed copy can generally run offline after PS5 sharing or PS4 primary activation is configured. |
| Extra or Premium Game Catalog title | The matching Extra or Premium tier and a download or supported access method. | Your tier expires, you downgrade, or Sony removes the title from the catalog. | Downloaded access still depends on both the membership tier and the title remaining in the catalog; it is not a permanent license. |
| Discounted purchase made through Plus | A normal purchase license, whether or not Plus remains active. | The purchase itself is not revoked merely because Plus ends. | After installation, it follows the normal purchased-game offline rules, subject to console authorization and any game-specific online requirement. |
The key distinction is ownership status. A Monthly Game obtained at no cost is a benefit that is available during membership. A game you bought at a Plus discount remains yours when the subscription ends, although online services can still require a connection.

Sony states that when a PlayStation Plus subscription ends, you lose access to Plus benefits such as Monthly Games, online storage and online multiplayer. That applies even if a Monthly Game is still installed on the console. The files remain on the drive, but the entitlement that lets the account launch them is no longer active.

Renewing or restarting the appropriate PlayStation Plus membership restores access to Monthly Games that you previously added to your library, provided the account and console are otherwise configured correctly. You do not need to download the game again merely because the subscription lapsed, unless the installation was deleted or damaged.
Expiration is different from a temporary network outage. A disconnected console with an active, locally authorized membership can run an installed offline game. An expired membership cannot be made valid by switching to offline mode.
Which features still work without internet?
Single-player and local modes
Story campaigns, local split-screen modes and other self-contained features can work offline when the game is fully installed and its license is valid. Individual games may impose their own always-online checks, anti-cheat requirements or server-based progression, so the Monthly Games license alone does not guarantee that every mode launches without a network.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Online multiplayer
Online multiplayer normally requires both network access and an active PlayStation Plus membership. Console Sharing and Offline Play does not provide a way to connect to another player while the console is disconnected. Local multiplayer that does not contact a server is a separate case.
Cloud streaming
Cloud streaming is not an offline workaround because the game runs on a remote server and sends video to your console. Sony’s support requirements specify at least 5 Mbps broadband, and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are connection requirements, not allowances for offline play.
Cloud storage and synchronization
Online storage is a Plus benefit and cannot synchronize saves while the console is offline. You can continue using local saves, but uploading or downloading saves requires the network and an active entitlement for that service.
Can you share a Monthly Game with another console?
Yes, within Sony’s console-sharing limits. A downloaded Monthly Game can be shared on one PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled and on one PS4 activated as the primary PS4. Other users on those authorized consoles can use games covered by the sharing setting, including downloaded Monthly Games.
This does not create a second independent license for every console you own. If you enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on another PS5, the previous PS5 loses that particular offline-sharing authorization. On PS4, changing the primary activation has the same practical effect for the old console.

For reliable travel use, designate the console you will carry or leave at home before disconnecting. Sign in and refresh the license on that system while online, then test the game from the other user profile if sharing is the reason for access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is a downloaded Plus game locked?
A padlock usually means the console cannot confirm a valid entitlement or the title is not available under the current account and settings. Check these causes in order:
- Membership status: In account or subscription settings, confirm that the PlayStation Plus plan has not expired and that it includes the required tier for the game.
- Correct account: Make sure the game was added by the same account that owns the membership. A different local user may see the installation but not hold the license.
- Console authorization: On PS5, verify Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, verify that the system is activated as the primary PS4.
- Catalog status: If the title came from Extra or Premium rather than Monthly Games, check whether it was removed from the catalog or requires a higher tier.
- License refresh: Connect to the internet, sign in to the owning account and use the console’s Restore Licenses function in account settings. Restart the console after the refresh.
- Service status: If Sony’s service is experiencing an outage, license checks can fail temporarily. Reconnect and test again after the service is restored.
- Installation state: Confirm that the download and installation finished and that the game is not waiting for an update or additional content required by its launcher.
If the subscription has genuinely expired, restoring licenses or reinstalling the game will not restore a no-cost Monthly Game entitlement. Reactivate the membership first.
Travel checklist for reliable offline access
- Claim each Monthly Game while it is listed and confirm it appears in your library.
- Download the complete game and any essential updates before leaving your network.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 you will use, or activate the PS4 as primary.
- Launch the game once while online, then test its intended single-player or local mode with the console disconnected.
- Keep the PlayStation Plus membership active for the entire period you expect to play.
- Bring local save data if you will not have access to cloud synchronization.
- Do not rely on cloud streaming, online multiplayer or server-dependent modes during the offline period.
Examples of common situations
You downloaded this month’s game, then lost internet access
If you claimed the game, completed the download, enabled the correct console authorization and still have an active membership, the installed offline-capable modes should remain playable. A brief loss of connectivity does not itself cancel the Monthly Game license.
You downloaded it but never added it to your library
Downloading alone is not the safest way to establish the entitlement. Connect while the game is offered, add it to the library under the Plus account and verify that the account recognizes it before going offline.
Your membership ended while the game was installed
The installation can stay on the drive, but the game is locked because the no-cost Plus entitlement ended. Renewing the required membership is the remedy; deleting and reinstalling does not convert it into a purchase.
You can play on one PS5 but not another
Check which PS5 has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. Only one PS5 can hold that setting for the account at a time. The second console may require the owning account to remain signed in and online for license checks, and it will not provide the same offline-sharing behavior.

The practical rule
PlayStation Plus Monthly Games are playable offline when they are claimed, fully downloaded and authorized on the console, and the Plus membership is still active. PS5 uses Console Sharing and Offline Play; PS4 uses primary-console activation. Expiration removes the no-cost Monthly Game license, while a game bought at a Plus discount remains a normal purchase. Treat catalog titles, streaming and online multiplayer as separate cases because each has additional membership or network conditions.
