Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: not on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 in their current Nintendo Classics catalogs. The original Game Boy versions of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue remain officially playable on a Nintendo 3DS only when they were purchased for that system before the 3DS eShop stopped taking new sales on March 27, 2023. Switch and Switch 2 do have Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, released as separate digital remakes on February 28, 2026, but those are not the original Game Boy games.
Where the original games are available now
Nintendo’s current product and support information points to four distinct routes. Only two deliver the original software: an already-owned 3DS Virtual Console copy, or an authentic Game Boy cartridge running on original hardware. Switch and Switch 2 currently offer remakes rather than the original binaries.

| Route | Original Red/Blue? | Availability in 2026 | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console | Yes | New purchases ended when the 3DS eShop closed on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says previously owned software can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. | Portable play with the closest official version of the original releases |
| Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics | No announcement | Nintendo’s cited FAQ lists other Pokémon titles and says it has “nothing to announce regarding any other potential titles.” | Players willing to wait for a future catalog announcement |
| Switch or Switch 2 FireRed/LeafGreen | No; remakes | Standalone digital software released February 28, 2026. Regional storefront timing and availability can differ. | Modern hardware, updated mechanics and local wireless play |
| Original Game Boy hardware and cartridge | Yes | Requires an authentic cartridge and working hardware. Used-market condition and pricing vary. | Collectors and players seeking the original hardware experience |
Compare any option on four questions: does it run the original code, can you legally obtain it today, how portable is it, and which trading or battling features still work?

Can you play original Red and Blue on Nintendo 3DS?
Already purchased Virtual Console copies
Yes. Nintendo lists Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue Virtual Console editions as Nintendo 3DS software, including compatibility with Poké Transporter. A 3DS that has the games associated with its Nintendo account or system can therefore remain the most practical official portable way to play the exact original releases.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The important limitation is ownership history. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop Discontinuation Q&A states that, as of March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, it was no longer possible to make purchases in the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family. Do not treat a listing for an “unused” 3DS as proof that the games are included: the software may have been deleted, the account may not transfer with the hardware, or the seller may never have owned it.
Redownloading an owned copy
Nintendo says that, even after the 2023 sales shutdown and for the foreseeable future, users can redownload games and downloadable content and receive software updates on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems. If you already bought Red or Blue, use the 3DS eShop’s redownload or previously purchased software area while signed into the Nintendo account that made the purchase. Keep the system, account credentials and any required storage available; a factory-reset or account change can make a used system’s software history difficult to verify.
What the 3DS route does not guarantee
Nintendo ended online play and other online communication functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024. The support records identify Red and Blue as Poké Transporter-compatible, but that listing should not be read as a guarantee that every transfer or online service remains operational today. Do not promise Pokémon HOME transfers, online battling or other network functions for the Virtual Console versions without checking a current Nintendo service notice for your region.
Are Pokémon Red and Blue on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2?
The original Game Boy versions
There is no announced Switch or Switch 2 release of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue in the Nintendo Classics information covered by Nintendo’s current FAQ. After describing the Pokémon games currently listed, Nintendo says: “We have nothing to announce regarding any other potential titles.” That is a statement about the announcement status, not a promise that the games will never arrive. Catalogs and regional offerings can change, so a future Nintendo announcement would supersede this snapshot.

Consequently, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription does not currently provide the original Red and Blue through the cited Nintendo Classics catalogs. Buying a subscription in the hope that it unlocks these two games is not a supported route as of October 18, 2026.
What is in the current subscription catalogs
The existence of other Pokémon software in Nintendo Classics collections does not imply that every earlier generation is included. Each title is licensed and listed separately. Check the game’s exact name and platform label in Nintendo’s own catalog rather than assuming that a Game Boy or Game Boy Color collection contains Red and Blue.
What you get with FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch
Release and purchase model
Nintendo Australia lists digital releases of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 28, 2026. The games are offered as standalone software and are not planned for release as part of the Game Boy Advance–Nintendo Classics collection, according to Nintendo’s support FAQ. Because the cited date comes from Nintendo Australia, verify the release date and storefront listing for your country before purchasing.
Nintendo explicitly says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these releases. They are not subscription-only games. Nintendo also says online play is not supported; local wireless trading and battling are supported. That distinction matters if your goal is to trade Pokémon with someone nearby rather than connect through Nintendo’s internet services.

Why they are not the same as Red and Blue
FireRed and LeafGreen retell the Kanto adventure as Game Boy Advance-era remakes. They use the remakes’ code, presentation and mechanical changes rather than the original Game Boy binaries. The setting, characters and broad journey are familiar, but a remake is not a preservation copy.
| Question | Original Red/Blue | FireRed/LeafGreen |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying software | Original Game Boy releases or their 3DS Virtual Console versions | Game Boy Advance remakes |
| Switch/Switch 2 availability | Not announced in the cited Nintendo Classics FAQ | Standalone digital releases from February 28, 2026 |

| Internet play | 3DS online functionality is affected by the April 8, 2024 service shutdown | Nintendo says online play is not supported |
| Local connectivity | Depends on the original hardware or service configuration; do not assume current online transfer support | Local wireless trading and battling are supported |
| Visuals and mechanics | Original Game Boy-era presentation and rules | Updated Game Boy Advance-era presentation and mechanics |
Playing the originals on Game Boy hardware
What you need
- An authentic Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue cartridge.
- A compatible, working original Game Boy-family system.
- A functioning cartridge and hardware condition suitable for saving and play.
This route is the most faithful to the original release because it uses the original cartridge format and hardware behavior. It is also the least predictable purchase: cartridge authenticity, label condition, save reliability and console condition vary across the used market. A listing that shows a cartridge shell does not establish that it is genuine or that it includes a working save.
How it differs from a 3DS copy
An authentic cartridge gives you original-hardware play without relying on a Nintendo account or a discontinued storefront. A 3DS Virtual Console copy is easier to carry and is an officially distributed digital version, but it depends on an already completed purchase and continued redownload access. Neither route should be advertised as providing modern online trading.
Which route should you choose?
Choose a 3DS if exact original gameplay is the priority
Look for a Nintendo 3DS whose seller can demonstrate that Red or Blue appears in the system’s purchased-software or redownload list. Ask whether the console is being sold with the original Nintendo account or whether the games were purchased on an account that will not be transferred. If the seller cannot prove ownership, value the hardware as a 3DS alone, not as a guaranteed game bundle.

Choose FireRed or LeafGreen if you want Switch convenience
These are the appropriate choices when you want to play the Kanto story on current Nintendo hardware, use local wireless trading or battling, and avoid hunting for discontinued 3DS purchases. Select them only if remake mechanics and presentation are acceptable; they do not recreate the original Game Boy versions byte for byte.
Choose original hardware if collecting and authenticity matter most
A genuine cartridge and Game Boy provide the original physical format and the strongest preservation value. Inspect the cartridge and test the system where possible. Because used inventory changes constantly, there is no universal condition or price that can be attached to every listing.
Wait if you specifically want Red and Blue on Switch
Waiting is the only option that preserves the possibility of an official Switch release of the original games. Nintendo has not announced one in the cited FAQ, and no release date or purchase method should be inferred from the availability of FireRed and LeafGreen.
Buying checklist for a used 3DS or cartridge
- Confirm the exact software: “Pokémon Red Version” and “Pokémon Blue Version” Virtual Console listings are different from later remakes.
- Verify ownership: request a photo or demonstration of the game in the 3DS redownload list, not merely a home-screen icon.
- Clarify account status: ask whether the Nintendo account that purchased the game remains with the system and whether the seller expects to remove it.
- Check redownload expectations: Nintendo says owned software remains redownloadable for the foreseeable future, but that is not the same as new sales reopening.
- For cartridges, check authenticity: inspect the board or have the cartridge tested by a reputable specialist when possible.
- Do not pay for unsupported features: neither a used 3DS listing nor a Switch remake listing should be represented as guaranteed Pokémon HOME or internet functionality.
Common misunderstandings
“The 3DS eShop is closed, so owned games are gone.”
That is incorrect. New purchases ended on March 27, 2023, but Nintendo says redownloads, downloadable content redownloads and software updates remain available for previously owned software for the foreseeable future.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

“FireRed and LeafGreen are just the original games in higher resolution.”
They are remakes with Game Boy Advance-era features and mechanics. Their shared Kanto storyline does not make them the original Game Boy releases.
“A Nintendo Switch Online subscription unlocks every classic Pokémon game.”
No. Nintendo lists titles individually, and the current FAQ does not announce original Red or Blue for Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics.
“Switch versions need Nintendo Switch Online for local trading.”
Nintendo says FireRed and LeafGreen do not require a membership and support local wireless trading and battling, while online play is not supported.

Bottom line for October 18, 2026
If “Red and Blue” means the exact original Game Boy games, use an already-owned 3DS Virtual Console copy or an authentic Game Boy cartridge. If you want a supported purchase for current hardware, buy FireRed or LeafGreen on Switch or Switch 2 and treat them as remakes. Nintendo has not announced the original Red and Blue for Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics, so do not confuse a remake listing, a subscription catalog or a used-console advertisement with an official release of the originals.
