Yes. Pokémon TCG Pocket can be played without spending money. The app is free to start, and every player can open two booster packs each day at no cost. Optional purchases—Poké Gold and the Premium Pass—can shorten waits or add benefits, but they are not required to access the collection, deck building or battles.
Your trade-off as a non-paying player is time rather than access. Progress is paced by the daily pack cycle, missions, event rewards and in-game timers. No official source gives a guaranteed number of days for a free player to complete every expansion.

What “free to play” means in Pokémon TCG Pocket
The Pokémon Company describes Pokémon TCG Pocket as “Free-to-start; optional in-game purchases available.” Pokémon Support’s Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, gives the same answer: “The game is free to start. There are optional in-app purchases.” You can install the mobile app, collect digital cards, build decks and use its battle features without entering payment information.
Pocket is a digital card game, not a full rules-identical simulator of the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. Its rules and systems are designed for the app, so owning or playing the tabletop game is not a prerequisite and should not be used as a guide to every mobile rule.

What every player receives at no cost
Two booster-pack openings every day
The central free loop is two booster-pack openings per day. The official Pokémon TCG Pocket site states: “In this game, you will be able to open two booster packs every day at no cost.” Those packs contain digital cards, including nostalgic artwork and cards made specifically for Pocket. You do not need Poké Gold or a Premium Pass to use the two daily openings.
Cards, decks and battles
Cards obtained from free packs can be added to your collection and used to build decks. Pokémon Support also confirms that free players can use the app’s battle features. The fact that a card is obtained through the free cycle does not make it a trial card or a temporary loan.
Missions, events and other rewards
Daily missions, events and other in-app rewards supplement the two-pack cycle. Missions can be claimed once per day. Rewards are subject to their stated availability period, so an unclaimed reward can expire when that period ends. Check the mission or event screen rather than assuming an unfinished reward will remain indefinitely.
Pack points
Pack points do not expire. They are tied to the expansion in which you earned them: points from one expansion can be exchanged only for cards in that same expansion. This makes pack points useful for targeting a card from a particular set, but they cannot be pooled across expansions to buy an item from whichever set you prefer.

How the free daily cycle works
- Check the reset time. Pokémon Support says the in-game date changes at 6:00 a.m. UTC. That is the reference point for daily availability, not necessarily midnight in your local time.
- Open the two free packs. Use the no-cost openings after the reset. Paid items can change waiting times, but the daily free entitlement is the foundation of a zero-spend routine.
- Review missions. Daily missions can be claimed once per day. Read each reward’s availability window and claim it before that window closes.
- Watch event conditions. Events may have their own stamina, battle or expiry rules. If an event says a reward or attempt is temporary, treat that deadline separately from the daily 6:00 a.m. UTC reset.
- Spend pack points deliberately. Because points are locked to their earning expansion and do not expire, saving them for a card you actually need can be more useful than exchanging them immediately.
The result is steady but deliberately paced progress. A player who misses a reset, leaves a mission unclaimed or ignores an event deadline may lose that day’s opportunity even though the app itself remains free.
What Poké Gold can buy
Poké Gold is an optional in-game currency. Pokémon Support lists several uses:
- Shortening the waiting time before opening packs.
- Shortening Wonder Pick waiting periods.
- Restoring an expired Wonder Pick.
- Participating in some solo event battles when event stamina is insufficient.
These uses buy speed, recovery or additional opportunities. They do not establish a paywall around ordinary collecting, deck construction or basic battles. If you never purchase Poké Gold, you continue with the free pack schedule, missions, events and whatever other rewards the app makes available.

Is the Premium Pass required?
No. Pokémon Support defines the Premium Pass as “a paid service that allows you to receive several in-game benefits for a set monthly fee.” It is an optional subscription, not an access requirement. A player who declines it can still use the free daily pack openings and the core collection and battle systems.

The table separates two commonly confused purchases. Poké Gold is spendable currency for particular actions, while the Premium Pass is a recurring service with a bundle of benefits. You can use neither, one, or both.
How the 14-day Premium Pass trial works
Eligibility and duration
A first-time subscriber can use a 14-day no-cost Premium Pass trial once per Apple Account or once per Google Account, according to Pokémon Support’s Purchase and Premium Pass FAQ, updated May 12, 2026. The allowance is account-based, so deleting and reinstalling the app does not create a new trial.
Automatic renewal
When the trial ends, automatic billing begins unless automatic renewal is canceled at least 24 hours before the trial expires. The subscription is managed through the relevant Apple or Google account rather than by uninstalling the game.
What uninstalling does not do
Removing Pokémon TCG Pocket from your phone does not cancel the Premium Pass. If you start the trial only to test its benefits, open your Apple or Google subscription settings and turn off renewal before the 24-hour cutoff. Keep the account confirmation of cancellation until the trial period has ended.

Can a free player complete the collection?
Free players can keep collecting cards indefinitely, but the official material does not publish a guaranteed completion timeline. The number of days would depend on the expansions available, the cards received from packs, pack-point decisions, mission and event participation, and any changes to the game’s reward structure.
It is therefore not accurate to promise that a no-spend player will finish a specific expansion in a fixed number of weeks or months. Paying can increase the rate of attempts or reduce waits, which may improve speed and breadth, but it does not turn an unverified completion estimate into an official guarantee.

Meeting those specifications does not guarantee that the app will work on every device. Hardware, operating-system implementation and other compatibility factors can still prevent installation or stable operation. Check the current store listing and Pokémon Support guidance for your specific model before troubleshooting purchases or account data.

A practical zero-spend routine
- Set a reminder around 6:00 a.m. UTC. Convert that time to your local zone so you know when the date changes.
- Use both free pack openings. Doing so keeps your collection moving without relying on paid currency.
- Claim daily mission rewards the same day. A reward can expire when its availability period ends.
- Read event rules before spending stamina. Some solo event battles can require stamina, and Poké Gold is only one way to address an insufficient stamina balance.
- Reserve pack points for the right expansion. They do not expire, but they cannot be exchanged outside the expansion that generated them.
- Ignore pressure to subscribe. The Premium Pass is optional; declining it does not remove the two daily free pack openings.
When paying changes the experience
The clearest benefit of spending is reduced waiting and additional flexibility. Poké Gold can accelerate pack or Wonder Pick timers, restore an expired Wonder Pick and cover some event stamina shortages. The Premium Pass adds a separate set of benefits for a monthly fee and may make regular play more convenient.
That convenience is different from a requirement to compete or collect. A non-paying player accepts the app’s timers and reward windows, while a paying player can spend to take more actions sooner or obtain subscription benefits. Neither option comes with an official promise of completing every expansion, and the cited sources do not provide a general win-rate advantage or annual cost figure.
Bottom line for free players
You can play Pokémon TCG Pocket completely free: install the app, open two booster packs each day, collect cards, build decks and battle without buying Poké Gold or the Premium Pass.
