To play a PS2 title on PS4, look for a separate PS4 digital edition in your region’s PlayStation Store, or check whether it is included for streaming in the local PlayStation Plus Premium catalog. Both options depend on the specific game and your country.
Why a PS2 disc won’t work in a PS4
Sony states in its PS4 safety guide that PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 software cannot be played from disc on PS4. Sony’s 2013 PS4 FAQ also says the console does not have PS2 backward compatibility.
A PS4 can play some supported DVD and Blu-ray media, but reading a disc is not the same as running the game software on it. Sony’s media guidance distinguishes supported disc playback from game compatibility. No setting, USB drive, HDMI adapter or other accessory turns a PS2 game disc into playable PS4 software.
Two ways to play a PS2 title on PS4
| Route | How access works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 digital edition | Buy and install a PS4 release of the title, if one is offered. | Confirm the listing is for PS4 and available in your country. The original PS2 disc is not a substitute. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium streaming | Stream a selected PS2 game included in the service’s catalog. | Check that the title is in the local catalog, streaming is available on PS4 in your market, and you have a suitable internet connection and active subscription. |
These are different kinds of access: a digital edition is a PS4 game you install, while streaming depends on subscription access and continued catalog inclusion. Sony’s PlayStation Plus information describes selected PS2 titles, not the entire PS2 library, and the catalog varies by market and can change.

How to check whether your game is available
- Search the exact title in the PlayStation Store on your PS4 or the local PlayStation Store website. Open the product listing and verify that it identifies a PS4 edition. A listing for another platform does not establish that a PS4 version is available.
- If there is no PS4 edition to buy, check the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog for your country. Search the catalog for the exact game and confirm it is offered for streaming on PS4. Catalog membership and availability can differ by region.
- For streaming, check your connection. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps for cloud streaming in its cloud streaming guidance. That is a minimum requirement, not a guarantee of uninterrupted play.
- If you own only the original disc, use compatible hardware instead. The PS4 cannot run that copy; a PS2 system is a separate way to play it.
What Sony’s PS2-on-PS4 releases meant
On December 5, 2015, Sony announced PS2 games as digital PS4 releases through the PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe. Its initial list included Dark Cloud, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Rogue Galaxy, The Mark of Kri, Twisted Metal: Black and War of the Monsters. Sony said those PS4 releases had trophies and were up-rendered to 1080p.
The announcement’s prices—$14.99 for the first six listed games and $9.99 for Twisted Metal: Black and War of the Monsters—were US launch prices in 2015, not current prices or evidence that a game is available today. The historical announcement explains the approach: Sony released adapted PS2 titles as PS4 software rather than enabling PS4 to read original PS2 game discs. See the original announcement for its launch details.

If the title isn’t available on PS4
If the game has neither a PS4 Store edition nor a listing in your region’s Premium streaming catalog, the routes described here won’t let you play it on PS4. Availability is title- and country-specific, so check the current Store and catalog rather than relying on a past release list. If you want to play the PS2 disc you already own, use a PS2 console.
