No—PS5 cannot play original PS2 game discs. Even a PS5 model with a disc drive does not support PS2-format software. You can play some PS2-era games on PS5 if a particular title is offered in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog or has a separate PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake.
Can I play PS2 discs on PS5?
No. Sony’s official PS5 safety guide says that PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from a disc. The restriction applies to PS5 disc-drive models too: inserting an original PS2 disc will not launch the game.
Cleaning the disc or using an adapter does not change the console’s software compatibility. If you want to use an original PS2 disc, you need separate PS2 hardware; that is not a way to run the disc on PS5.
Does PS5 have backwards compatibility with PS2?
Not for original PS2 discs. PS5 backward compatibility is a separate matter for PS4 games: PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5, but that figure describes PS4 compatibility, not PS2 compatibility. Check the current listing for a specific PS4 release rather than assuming every PS4 game works.

How can I play old PS2 games on PS5?
Check the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog
Some classic games are available through the Classics Catalog. PlayStation’s US membership information lists catalog access as a Premium benefit, but the titles and plan details can vary by region and change over time. Membership access is not a guarantee that a particular PS2-era game is currently available.
- From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Go to Benefits and select Classics Catalog.
- Find the game and open its listing to see whether Download or Stream is offered.
These steps come from PlayStation’s US support instructions. If your account is in another region, check its local catalog and membership terms. PlayStation says streaming requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports that resolution.

Catalog titles can have end dates. Before subscribing or planning to play, check the live listing for the exact title, your region, the required membership, and whether the game can be downloaded or only streamed. PlayStation’s US membership page identifies Classics Catalog access as a Premium benefit; confirm current tiers and benefits for your own region.
Look for a separate PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake
A remaster or remake is a distinct release, not your original PS2 disc running on PS5. PlayStation’s 2022 service guide described remastered and remake versions of PS2 games as downloadable on PS4 and PS5. For a game you have in mind, check the current PlayStation Store listing for the edition and platform: a PS4 version must also be compatible with PS5 to play there, and compatibility is not universal.
