Neither tells you what a game will cost in a future sale. Use the wishlist to keep track of games, then check the current offer against historical data for your own Steam store region before deciding.
What a Steam sale and wishlist notification actually mean
Steam discounts apply to individual store products, with publishers setting discounts under Valve’s published rules. Adding a game to your wishlist keeps it easy to find and can prompt a sale alert: Steam says it can notify you by email or through its mobile app when a wishlisted game is on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says a discount of 20% or greater can automatically trigger a wishlist notification. That is a notification threshold, not a promise that a game will be discounted, that it will be discounted by a particular amount, or that a sale will arrive by a particular date. Steamworks’ discounting documentation describes the rule.
Think of an alert as a prompt to inspect the offer. It tells you a qualifying sale is underway; it does not establish that the price is the game’s lowest recorded price.

Set up a wishlist that is useful
- Add games you may actually buy. Open the game’s Steam store page and select the wishlist control. Steam Support describes the wishlist as a way to receive a notification when a wanted game goes on sale: Steam Support: Wishlist.
- Choose notification channels you check. Steam supports sale notifications by email and through its mobile app. You can opt out of email notifications or turn off mobile notifications using Steam’s notification controls. Steam’s notification page covers the options.
- Organize a long list. Steam’s wishlist features include custom categories, category-specific notification choices, improved search and sharing options. Steam also describes notifications about demos becoming available. These features can help separate games you are ready to buy from those you are merely keeping an eye on. How to check whether a sale is a good deal
Compare the store price with the price history recorded for the same game and your own Steam store region. A historical chart provides context, not a forecast. Check the tracker’s coverage dates before interpreting any “low” label: it means the lowest price found in that tracker’s records, which may cover only part of the game’s pricing history.
SteamDB provides price-history charts and a browser extension that can surface recorded price information on Steam store pages. Its price-history page says daily records began on July 2, 2026, so a low shown there is a low within that observed window—not necessarily an all-time low. SteamDB says it cannot know which particular games will be discounted in an upcoming sale or what discount they will receive. Its price-change information is useful for reviewing recorded changes, not for confirming future sale participation or prices.

A practical buy-or-wait routine
- Wishlist a game when you want to revisit it or receive sale alerts.
- Set email, mobile and category notifications to suit how you want to be alerted.
- When an alert arrives, note the current store price and compare it with a tracker’s recorded history. Check the tracker’s coverage window and region before relying on its low-price figure.
- Decide whether the current price is acceptable to you. Waiting may bring another discount, but neither the wishlist nor historical prices establish when that will happen or how large it will be.
- Review the final checkout total. Steam Support says coupons and loyalty discounts generally do not stack with sale pricing unless the offer clearly says otherwise. Check Steam Support’s wishlist and discount guidance.
