When a gacha RPG’s live service ends, the game may stop working, become playable offline, or survive only as a story or gallery archive. There is no standard shutdown plan: whether your account, characters, progress, and access remain depends on the publisher’s official instructions for that specific game.
What “end of service” can mean
End of service (EOS) is not a promise that the game will remain playable—or that it will disappear in one particular way. A publisher may terminate the app, remove its online features and offer an offline version, or preserve selected content in a theater, story viewer, or gallery. These outcomes can differ even between modes inside the same app.
- Full termination: If the game requires the publisher’s servers and no offline version is provided, access may end when service stops.
- Offline conversion: Some gameplay may continue without the live service, but events, online functions, or other content may be removed.
- Archive mode: A story or theater viewer can preserve scenes without preserving the original playable RPG. A gallery may retain only selected material.
Do not assume that “offline” means the whole live game remains intact. Check which modes and content the publisher says will be available.
What happens to your account, characters, and progress?
Account data and offline access are separate questions. A publisher might preserve some gameplay but not transfer the live account or its progress. Data may be kept locally, moved through a deadline-bound process, excluded from the offline version, or left unspecified. Characters and purchases are not guaranteed to carry over unless the notice says so.

For example, Aniplex said player data from before service ended for Alterna Vvelt: Blue Exorcist Another Story would not carry over to its offline version. That means an offline release should not be treated as a continuation of your live account by default. Read Aniplex’s service-ending notice.

The examples show why it is important to read the exact plan: offline play, archival access, data transfer, and device rules are distinct promises.

Will reinstalling the game or changing phones affect access?
It can. An installed app is not proof that you can keep using it after shutdown, and an account alone may not restore a converted or archived version. A transfer process may depend on keeping the app or data on the current device. In its notice for KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ Dark Road and Union χ, Square Enix specifically warned that deleting and reinstalling the app or changing devices would prevent player data from transferring.
Before uninstalling, resetting a device, or moving to a new phone, check the game’s notice for those exact cases. Do not assume a later reinstall, account login, physical copy, third-party server, or unofficial workaround is supported.

What to check in the official shutdown notice
- Confirm the dates and region. Note the final service date and whether the notice applies to your region. Check separately for deadlines to buy or use currency, initiate a transfer, download an update, or access an offline release.
- Identify what remains. Look for an explicit statement about offline gameplay, a story or theater viewer, a gallery, or no post-shutdown access. Check which stories, events, characters, and battle systems are included or removed.
- Read the data-transfer rules. Find out whether the publisher will retain or transfer the account, progress, characters, purchases, or only selected save data—and whether you must take action before service ends.
- Check device and app requirements. Look for rules about deletion, reinstalling, changing devices, required updates, app availability, and any disc or platform requirements.
- Follow the game-specific instructions before the deadline. If the notice does not say that an item or feature transfers, do not treat it as guaranteed.
Can you keep the story if the gacha closes?
Possibly, but only if the publisher provides a way to access it. That might be a theater or story archive rather than the original RPG, and it may preserve only selected content. Square Enix’s plan for KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ, for example, was theater mode, while Dark Road was to remain playable offline. Check the notice for the exact title and mode you want; a general promise of an offline app does not establish that every event or story chapter will be included.
