A PS5 with an integrated disc drive can install a disc-based game and run its offline-capable content without Wi-Fi after the console has been set up. Insert the disc, let the game data install, launch it from Games home, and keep the disc in the drive whenever you play. The important exceptions are first-time pairing for a detachable drive, games that require servers or extra downloads, and features such as patches, online multiplayer and cloud services.
The short answer depends on your PS5 hardware
Physical media only works if the console can read it. A standard PS5 with a built-in Blu-ray drive is ready to read PS5 game discs once system setup is complete. Most games whose playable data is present on the disc can then be installed and started while the console is disconnected from the internet.

A compatible detachable Disc Drive changes the answer for some PS5 Digital Edition slim consoles and PS5 Pro consoles. Sony requires an internet connection to pair that drive with the console during initial setup. Pairing is a one-time activation step; ordinary disc play can be offline after it succeeds.
A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot read a physical game disc at all. It can play downloaded games, and adding the compatible detachable drive gives it physical-disc capability after the required pairing process.

What you must do before going offline
Prepare the console while you still have an internet connection. This prevents a setup problem from being mistaken for a game problem.
- Identify the drive. Confirm that the console has an integrated drive, or install a detachable drive that Sony lists as compatible with your specific Digital Edition slim or PS5 Pro model.
- Complete system setup. Finish the initial console setup and install any system software update the setup process requires. A console that has never completed activation may not be ready to launch games offline.
- Pair a detachable drive. If your drive is not built in, connect the console to the internet and complete the one-time pairing requested during setup. Do not assume the drive is ready merely because it is physically attached.
- Insert the PS5 game disc. The console begins copying the game data from the disc and displays a notification when the game is ready to play. Installation time varies by title and storage speed.
- Launch once. Start the game from Games home while connected. This confirms that the disc, installation and the title’s own startup requirements are satisfied.
- Test the actual offline condition. Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable, then start the game again. Test the single-player activities and saves you intend to use; an offline test is more reliable than assuming every mode has the same requirements.
Keep the disc inserted whenever you play. The installed files are on the console, but the disc remains the license check for a physical copy.
What works, and what does not, without a connection

Features that disappear when the PS5 is offline
Updates and patches
The disc provides the version pressed for that release. A console without internet cannot obtain later patches, performance fixes, accessibility changes or version-specific bug fixes. If an update was downloaded before disconnecting, the installed update remains available; otherwise you are limited to the disc version.
Online multiplayer and server modes
Competitive matches, cooperative sessions, leaderboards, matchmaking, cloud-hosted worlds and any mode that validates a session with a publisher server require a connection. A game can have a complete offline campaign and still keep selected menus or modes unavailable.
Cloud saves and other cloud features
Cloud synchronization cannot run while the console is offline. Local saves can still be created for an offline-capable game, but they stay on the console until connectivity is restored and synchronization is allowed. Features such as streaming, remote services, online photo sharing or server-side progression likewise cannot operate without their service.
DLC, bonus items and downloads
Additional chapters, language packs, texture packs, digital artbooks and preorder bonuses may be delivered as separate downloads rather than stored on the disc. Install them before disconnecting if the publisher supports offline use; otherwise they are unavailable offline. A disc therefore does not guarantee that every advertised item is present locally.
Always-online titles
Some games require a recurring server check even for solo play. For those titles, installation from a disc may succeed while launch fails offline. Check the package, the game’s publisher guidance and the title’s requirements instead of treating the disc as proof of offline support.

Do PS5 discs contain the whole game?
There is no universal answer across the PS5 library. Sony documents the normal process—insert the disc, allow game data to install, then select the game from Games home—but Sony does not maintain one official, title-by-title list identifying every offline requirement.

Use the physical release’s packaging and the publisher’s own instructions to determine three separate things:
- Whether the core, playable version is actually present on the disc.
- Whether a mandatory download is needed before the first launch.
- Whether a server, account sign-in or online subscription is required for the mode you want.
Do not confuse an optional update with a required download. A game may launch from its disc version without a patch, while another title may place only a launcher or a portion of its content on the disc and require a network download to finish installation.
Digital games have a different offline path
A digital purchase cannot be installed from a disc. Internet access is required to sign in to PlayStation Network, buy or redeem the game, download its files and complete the console’s license setup. Once an eligible game is fully downloaded, Console Sharing and Offline Play can allow it to start without a continuing connection.
That setting does not turn every entitlement into a permanent offline license. Games obtained through a subscription remain tied to an active PlayStation Plus subscription, and a subscription that has expired or been canceled can remove access even when the files remain on the SSD. Games owned outright and games accessed through a subscription should therefore be treated as separate cases when planning an offline library.

Before disconnecting a digital library
- Download the complete game and every expansion you need.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console that will be used offline.
- Launch each important game once while signed in, then test it with the network disabled.
- Keep enough free storage for updates or reinstalls you may need later; deleting a game while offline means you cannot download it again until connectivity returns.
Using PS4 discs and PS4 downloads
PS5 models fitted with a Blu-ray drive also support PS4 Blu-ray game discs. The same physical-media conditions apply: install the game, keep the disc inserted, and expect only the modes and content that function without servers. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 game disc; PS4 games on that hardware must be downloaded.
Backward compatibility does not change a game’s own online requirements. A PS4 title that depends on a service remains dependent on that service when launched on PS5.

Disc ownership does not mean the game runs directly from the disc. PS5 installs the game data to internal storage, and many large releases can occupy a substantial portion of that space. Keep free capacity for the installation itself and for any update or downloadable content you choose to install before going offline.
A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD can provide additional PS5 game storage, but compatibility and heatsink requirements change as Sony updates its specifications. Verify the current requirements for your console model before buying or installing a drive. Extra storage helps hold more installed games; it does not remove a title’s need for a disc, a license check or an online service.

Troubleshooting an offline disc game
The console does not recognize the disc
- Confirm that the disc is a PS5 or supported PS4 game disc, not an unsupported format.
- Check the disc for dirt, scratches or damage and reinsert it with the label orientation specified for your drive model.
- Restart the console and try another known-good game disc. If every disc fails, the issue is more likely the drive or its installation than the title.
- On a detachable-drive system, verify that pairing was completed while online. An unpaired drive cannot be made ready by disconnecting the network.
Installation stops or the game says it is not ready
- Leave the disc inserted and check available console storage. Delete or move an unused installation if there is not enough space.
- Wait for the disc-copy process to finish before launching. Starting too early can open a limited portion of the game while the remainder is still installing.
- If the title reports that additional content is required, reconnect once and identify whether the requirement is a patch, a mandatory download or optional DLC. Record what was installed before testing offline again.
The game launches but a mode is locked
Check whether that mode uses matchmaking, a publisher account, cloud data or another server. Test the game’s campaign or local modes separately; a locked online menu does not prove that the entire game is unusable offline.
Saves do not appear on another console
Offline saves are local. Without cloud synchronization, they will not automatically follow you to a second PS5. Reconnect and allow synchronization, or use the console’s supported local transfer and backup options before changing hardware.
Buying checklist for reliable offline play
If offline access is your priority, evaluate the complete setup rather than the box alone:

- Confirm that the particular game lists playable content on the disc and does not require a mandatory download or always-online service.
- Plan internal or compatible M.2 NVMe SSD capacity for the installed game data.
- Install patches, DLC and language packs while connected if you will need them away from the internet.
- Test the title with the network disabled before taking the console somewhere without service.
The safest expectation is therefore specific, not absolute: a properly set-up PS5 with a functioning drive can play the offline-capable, disc-installed version of many games without internet, but the disc cannot supply updates, servers, cloud functions or content that was never stored on it.
