A Windows PC or Mac can stream a PS5 game with Sony’s PS Remote Play app, and selected PlayStation Studios games have separate native PC releases. A PS4 cannot run a PS5-native game locally; it can only act as a Remote Play endpoint for a PS5 in supported configurations. PlayStation Portal is also a streaming endpoint: ordinary Remote Play requires a PS5, while its separate cloud-streaming mode requires PlayStation Plus Premium and supports only eligible PS5 titles.
The key distinction is native execution versus streaming. A native PC version runs on the computer and is a separate product. Remote Play sends video and audio from a PS5 to another device. Portal does not run PS5 games by itself, and it cannot connect to a PS4 console.

What “PS5 exclusive” means in practice
“Exclusive” describes where a game is officially available, not a permanent promise that it will never appear elsewhere. Sony can release a separate PC version of a game that first launched on PS5. That PC release is treated as its own product: buying the console edition does not grant the PC edition, and Sony says saves cannot currently be transferred between the console and PC versions.
Streaming is different. With Remote Play, the PS5 remains the machine running the game. The PC, PS4 or Portal receives the PS5’s stream and sends controller input back over a network connection. This means streaming does not bypass the need for a PS5, except where a Portal game is available through the separate Premium cloud-streaming service.

Sony’s current support guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for Remote Play or cloud-streaming sessions and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. Speed alone does not guarantee a stable session: the quality of the connection between the device, the internet and the PS5 also matters.
Playing PS5 games on a PC
Option 1: Native PC releases
Some PlayStation Studios games receive an official Windows release. In that case, the PC runs the game itself, so you do not need a PS5 for that version. You do need to buy the PC product separately, even if you already own the PlayStation version. Sony also says saves cannot currently be transferred between the console and PC versions, so progress on PS5 should not be assumed to carry over to a PC installation.
This is the closest PC equivalent to playing a normal PC game. It is not a compatibility layer and it is not Remote Play. Availability is title-specific: a game being a PlayStation Studios release does not automatically mean that a PC version exists.

Option 2: PS Remote Play from your PS5
Remote Play lets a Windows PC or Mac display and control a game that is running on your PS5. The PS5 is still required, and the computer is not running the game natively.
- Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Prepare the PS5 as the source console and enable Remote Play in its system settings.
- Sign in with the account associated with the console, then select the PS5 in the app.
- Connect a compatible controller to the computer and start the game from the streamed PS5 session.
- Use at least 5 Mbps broadband; Sony recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better Remote Play experience.
Remote Play is useful when the television is occupied or when you want to play elsewhere, but it does not change ownership. The game remains installed and licensed on the PS5, and the computer is receiving an interactive video stream.
Which PC route should you choose?
- Choose a native PC release when you want the game to run independently of a console and the title has an official PC version.
- Choose Remote Play when you already own a PS5 game and want to play it on a laptop or desktop without buying another copy.
- Do not expect shared saves between a PlayStation purchase and a separately purchased PC version; Sony’s current position is that saves cannot currently be transferred.
Can a PS4 run PS5 exclusives?
No. A PS4 cannot execute a PS5-native game locally. The hardware generation is not changed by installing an application or connecting an accessory.
Using a PS4 as a Remote Play screen
In supported configurations, a PS4 can be the endpoint for a Remote Play session whose source is a PS5. The PS5 does the processing and sends the stream; the PS4 supplies the display and controller input. This is therefore a streaming arrangement, not a PS4 version of the game.

- Use a PS5 that has the game installed and is configured for Remote Play.
- Set up the supported Remote Play connection between the PS5 and PS4.
- Keep the network within Sony’s stated limits: 5 Mbps is the minimum, while 15 Mbps is recommended for a better experience.
- Start the session from the PS4 and play while the PS5 remains the source machine.
If you only own a PS4, there is no method in the information Sony provides here that turns it into a local PS5-compatible console. You need either a PS5 for Remote Play or a different platform with an official release of the game.
Can PlayStation Portal play PS5 games by itself?
Not through its normal Remote Play function. Portal is a dedicated PS5 streaming device, not a standalone console. It streams compatible games installed on a PS5, so a PS5 is required for that mode. Portal cannot connect to PS4 consoles.
Portal Remote Play requirements
- A PS5 console containing the game you want to play.
- Remote Play enabled on that PS5.
- A broadband connection capable of at least 5 Mbps; Sony recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience.
- A title that is compatible with the Remote Play setup.
Because the game is running on your PS5, Portal does not create a second copy of the game and does not provide native execution. Turning off or losing access to the PS5 source ends the ordinary Remote Play path.
Portal cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium
Sony announced official Portal cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members on November 5, 2025. This is a separate route from Remote Play. Premium members can stream selected digital PS5 games from their own library and selected catalog games, subject to title and regional availability. Sony said thousands of PS5 games were supported at launch, but the eligible list is not universal and can change by region and title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cloud streaming does not make every PlayStation game available. Sony’s current information specifically limits Portal cloud streaming to eligible PS5 titles; PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal through this service. A Premium membership is required for the cloud path, and broadband quality still matters: Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 15 Mbps as the recommended level for a better Remote Play experience.
Ownership, eligibility and saves
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| If I own the PS5 version, do I get the PC version? | No. A native PC port is a separate product and requires its own purchase. |
| Can I stream a PS5 game to a PC without buying it again? | Yes, when you own it on the PS5 and use Remote Play. The PS5 remains the source. |
| Do PS5 and PC versions share saves? | Sony says saves cannot currently be transferred between the console and PC versions. |
| Can Portal use games installed on my PS4? | No. Portal is not compatible with PS4 consoles. |
| Do I need Premium for ordinary Portal Remote Play? | No. Ordinary Remote Play requires a PS5 and a network connection. Premium is required for Portal’s separate cloud-streaming mode. |
| Does Premium make every PS5 game streamable on Portal? | No. Only selected PS5 titles are eligible, and availability varies by title and region. |
Network expectations and common failure points
The connection is below 5 Mbps
Sony’s stated minimum is 5 Mbps for Remote Play and cloud-streaming sessions. Below that level, a session may fail to start or become unstable. Reaching 15 Mbps gives the connection more headroom, but it remains a recommendation rather than a guarantee of perfect performance.
The stream looks blurry or responds slowly
Remote Play is interactive streaming, so congestion or an inconsistent connection can affect image quality and input response even when a speed test briefly reports a high number. If possible, reduce competing traffic on the same connection, move the endpoint closer to the network equipment, and test again. These steps improve the network path; they do not convert the session into native execution.

The game is missing from Portal cloud streaming
Check the title’s eligibility and your region. Premium cloud streaming is limited to selected PS5 games, and Sony says availability varies by title and region. A game being playable through PS5 Remote Play does not automatically make it part of the Portal cloud catalog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The PS4 cannot find the game
Confirm that the PS4 is being used as a Remote Play endpoint for a PS5. A PS4 cannot launch a PS5-native game directly, so the PS5 must be powered or otherwise available as the source and configured for the supported Remote Play connection.
Which option fits your situation?
You have no PS5 and want to play on a computer
Look for an official native PC release. If one exists, buy the PC version; owning the PlayStation version does not substitute for that purchase. If no PC release exists, Remote Play is not an option because it needs a PS5.
You own a PS5 and want to play away from the television
Use PS Remote Play on a Windows PC or Mac, or use Portal for a purpose-built handheld streaming experience. Both options still depend on the PS5 as the source and on a suitable network.
You own a PS4 but not a PS5
You cannot play a PS5-native exclusive locally on the PS4. A PS4 can participate only when a PS5 is available to provide the Remote Play stream.
You want Portal without relying on a PS5 at home
Portal’s cloud-streaming mode is the relevant path. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium and supports only selected PS5 titles, with availability determined by the game and region. Ordinary Portal Remote Play still requires a PS5.
Bottom line
PC, PS4 and Portal provide different kinds of access rather than interchangeable versions. A PC can run a separately purchased native port or stream from a PS5. A PS4 cannot run PS5 games locally and can only receive a PS5 Remote Play stream. Portal does not run games natively, requires a PS5 for ordinary Remote Play, and adds a Premium cloud-streaming option for selected PS5 titles. Check the game’s platform listing, ownership terms, save compatibility and regional cloud eligibility before choosing a route.
