A Steam Deck cannot install and run PS5 software directly. Sony’s Remote Play streams a game from a PS5, so it requires both the console and a network connection. You can play a separate PC release locally on Steam Deck, including offline after installation, when that particular game and its launcher support Proton and offline use.
The important distinction: PS5 version versus PC version
When people say “PS5 game,” they may mean either the console build sold for PlayStation 5 or a separate Windows PC release of the same title. Those are different software versions. Steam Deck runs a PC operating system and PC game builds; it does not accept a PS5 game installation and execute it as if the Deck were a PlayStation console.

| Version you own or want to play | Where the game is rendered | PS5 required? | Network required? | Steam Deck result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console build through Remote Play | The PS5 renders the game and sends video and audio to the Deck | Yes | Yes, for communication between devices and Sony’s service requirements | Streaming only; not an offline solution |
| Separate Windows/Steam PC release | The Steam Deck renders the game locally through SteamOS and Proton | No | Usually only for downloading, account checks, updates or online features; the title may still require a connection | Possible, subject to Proton and Deck compatibility |
| PS5-only title with no PC release | Neither the Deck nor a remote device has the required local game build | Yes for Remote Play | Yes for Remote Play | Not playable locally on Steam Deck |
Buying a PlayStation copy does not, by itself, establish that you own a Steam copy. The available official information confirms the platform and streaming requirements, but it does not promise cross-buy rights. Check the game’s current Steam listing and licensing terms rather than assuming a console purchase transfers.

Remote Play is a video-streaming connection, not a way to copy PS5 software to the handheld. Sony’s PS Remote Play documentation says, “A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream your games to another devices.” The console starts the game, performs the rendering, and sends an interactive stream to the client. Without that console, there is no source producing the game image.

Sony also states that Remote Play needs at least 5 Mbps internet, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. The minimum applies to both upload and download in Sony’s troubleshooting guidance. Upload capacity matters because the PS5 has to send the stream out; download capacity matters because the Steam Deck has to receive it. A connection that is fast enough for ordinary web browsing can still produce delay, compression or disconnects if its upload performance is weak or unstable.

Does same-home Wi-Fi count as offline?
No. A local Wi-Fi network can keep the PS5 and Steam Deck in the same house and may reduce the distance data travels, but the devices still have to communicate. The PS5 remains essential, and the play session remains a stream rather than local execution. Turning off the internet while keeping a private router may allow some local-network configurations to communicate, but that is not the no-network, no-console mode described in the question and should not be treated as an offline feature.
How local Steam Deck play works
For local play, the game must have a PC build that can be installed on the Deck. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” Proton is the compatibility layer that allows many Windows games to run on SteamOS. Whether a particular release works well is title-specific: Proton behavior, anti-cheat, launchers, graphics settings and controller support can all affect the result.
Valve also says, “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” That statement applies to the installed PC game, not to a PS5 console build. Offline success therefore depends on the game’s own authentication and launcher behavior as well as its basic compatibility with Proton.

How to prepare a PC release for offline play
Use this process before you travel or deliberately disconnect the Deck. It separates what can be verified in advance from what cannot be solved without a network.
- Find the actual PC release. Search Steam for the title and confirm that the listing is a Windows/Steam edition rather than a page that only describes the PlayStation version. If no PC edition exists, there is no local installation route on Steam Deck.
- Check compatibility indicators. Review the game’s Steam Deck Verified or playable status, the system requirements and recent player reports. A compatibility label is useful evidence, not a promise that every update, mode or launcher will work offline.
- Install while online. Download the complete game and any required updates before leaving reliable connectivity. Allow first-run setup to finish while signed in, because some launchers or digital-rights systems perform an initial check.
- Identify account and launcher dependencies. Read the game’s current store description for third-party launchers, online-only modes or account requirements. If a separate launcher appears, sign in and complete its setup before testing offline; do not assume that starting Steam in offline mode bypasses another service’s requirement.
- Test Steam’s offline mode deliberately. With installation complete, switch the Deck to offline mode and launch the game from the library. Test the exact single-player mode you plan to use. If it refuses to start or requests a live check, that title does not meet your offline requirement, regardless of how well it runs when connected.
- Reserve local storage. Keep enough internal or removable storage for the game, updates and saved data. A Steam Deck microSD card can hold additional installed games, but it does not change compatibility or remove authentication requirements.
- Check controls and suspend behavior. Confirm that built-in controls, controller layouts and sleep/resume behavior work without downloading a new profile. A game that launches offline but requires a missing control mapping is not ready for a trip.
What accessories can and cannot change
| Accessory | What it helps with | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck microSD card | Adds space for locally installed PC games and their files. | Cannot install or translate a PS5 console build, provide a PS5’s rendering power, or satisfy an online-only check. |
| DualSense controller | Provides a familiar PlayStation-style control option for compatible PC games or a Remote Play setup. | Does not replace the PS5 and does not remove Remote Play’s network requirement. |
| Dock or external display | Connects the Deck to a larger screen and peripherals. | Does not turn the Deck into a PS5; Valve says docking does not improve game performance. |
Common situations and the correct answer
You own the PS5 game but not a PS5
You cannot use Remote Play because there is no console to render the game. Look for a separately sold PC edition. If one exists, evaluate that edition on its own Steam and Proton terms; do not treat the PlayStation purchase as proof of PC ownership.
You own a PS5 and want to play in the same house without internet service
Remote Play still requires communication between the PS5 and Deck. A local router may reduce latency, but this remains networked streaming and still requires the console. It is not equivalent to installing the game on the Deck.

You have no PS5 but the title has a Steam release
This is the viable path. Install the PC version while online, complete any first-run account work, and pass an offline-mode test. The Deck then runs the PC build locally; the PS5 is irrelevant to that installation.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
The title is available only on PS5
There is no supported local Steam Deck method in the supplied platform information. Remote Play remains dependent on a PS5 and connectivity, so neither requirement can be removed by adding storage, a controller or a dock.
You want to play during a flight or in another low-connectivity location
Choose a PC release that has already been installed and proven to launch in Steam offline mode. Downloading it for the first time, authenticating a launcher or recovering a failed license check may be impossible without a connection, so perform those checks before departure.

The game asks you to sign in
Reconnect and determine whether the prompt comes from Steam, a separate launcher or the game itself. Complete the required account setup, then repeat the offline test. If the title explicitly requires a live connection, there is no setting that converts it into an offline game.

The game is listed for PC but performs poorly or does not start
Recheck the Steam Deck compatibility status and current Proton notes for that title. A PC release is a necessary condition, not a guarantee: updates can change behavior, and a game may be playable on Windows while unsuitable on Deck.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The Deck has insufficient space
Move other installations or add a properly formatted microSD card, then install the complete game and its updates before testing offline again. Extra storage addresses capacity only; it cannot solve a missing PC release or an online dependency.
You expected console-quality features or saves to carry over
Treat the PC edition as a separate product and configuration. Confirm its own save system, graphics options, controller support and ownership terms in the Steam listing. The platform requirements establish how each version runs, not automatic transfer of purchases or progress.
Bottom line
A Steam Deck cannot play the PS5 console version of a game without a PS5, and Remote Play cannot work without a network connection. The practical offline alternative is a compatible PC release installed locally: verify the Steam listing, complete setup while online, test offline mode, and use local storage such as a microSD card if needed. A title-by-title answer still requires checking its current PC availability and Steam Deck compatibility.
