Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10 as the operating-system requirement and identifies Krafton Security Services (KSS) as kernel-level anti-cheat. Proton can run many Windows games, but it cannot automatically make this anti-cheat configuration compatible with Linux.
The dependable choices are dual-booting Windows, playing on another Windows PC through remote play, or using cloud gaming only if a current provider listing confirms PUBG support in your country.

What “PUBG” means here
This guide concerns the free-to-play PC game PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on Steam. It does not refer to PUBG Mobile or the Xbox and PlayStation versions.

There are several different questions that are often confused:
- Is the game sold through Steam?
- Can its Windows files launch through Proton?
- Can its anti-cheat initialize?
- Can it enter and remain in protected online matches?
A game reaching its menu is not proof that online multiplayer works. For PUBG, anti-cheat compatibility is the decisive issue.
Is PUBG officially available for Linux?
No official Linux or SteamOS version is listed for PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. The Steam page lists 64-bit Windows 10 as the operating-system requirement and lists KSS as kernel-level anti-cheat. Steam distribution alone does not imply Linux compatibility.

That does not mean Steam or Proton is generally unsuitable for Linux. Proton supports many Windows games, but support depends on the technologies used by each game and, for anti-cheat systems, on configuration by the developer.
Why Proton does not provide a reliable PUBG solution
Proton adapts many Windows game technologies for Linux. Anti-cheat is different from ordinary graphics, audio, or input compatibility: the game and its servers must accept the anti-cheat environment as legitimate.
Valve’s Proton documentation explains that selected anti-cheat systems can work only when the individual developer enables and configures them. It also says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported by Proton.
Steam specifically identifies PUBG’s KSS as kernel-level anti-cheat. Kernel-level software operates with deeper system access than normal user-space game files, and a Windows kernel driver cannot simply be loaded as an ordinary Proton component. Even if the executable launches, anti-cheat initialization, matchmaking, or access to protected servers can still fail.

Proton Experimental, GE-Proton, custom Wine components, DLL replacements, launch parameters, and unofficial patches cannot be presented as reliable or supported solutions for the live game.
Can a Proton launch option fix PUBG?
No reliable, supported launch-option fix has been established. Switching Proton versions may change whether the game opens, but it does not remove the underlying anti-cheat restriction.

Do not attempt to bypass or disable anti-cheat, replace protected files, manipulate kernel drivers, conceal processes, or use suspicious automation and overlay tools. Such methods can stop working after an update, violate the game’s rules, create security problems, or put the account at risk. PUBG’s official anti-cheat communications describe enforcement against unauthorized interaction with the client and its processes; see PUBG’s anti-cheat announcement and its anti-cheat roadmap.
Can PUBG run on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck uses SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system, and Proton runs many Windows games on it. However, PUBG’s Windows-only listing and kernel-level KSS anti-cheat mean the game should currently be treated as unsupported on SteamOS and Steam Deck.
Do not rely on an old ProtonDB report or an anecdotal claim that the game once launched. Updates can change anti-cheat behavior, and launching into a menu is not the same as completing a protected online match.
The best ways to play PUBG while keeping Linux
1. Dual-boot Windows: the best local option
For competitive play, dual-booting is the most dependable compromise. Linux remains your primary operating system, while PUBG runs natively in Windows on the same PC. You get the supported operating-system path, direct hardware access, and lower complexity than virtualization or streaming.
The trade-offs are the need for storage, Windows updates and drivers, a separate installation, and a reboot whenever you want to play. Windows must also meet PUBG’s published requirements.
2. Use a separate Windows gaming PC
If your main device is a Steam Deck, Linux laptop, workstation, or low-power computer, run PUBG on a compatible Windows gaming PC. You can play locally at that computer or stream it to Linux using a remote-play solution.
Remote play keeps your Linux session open but adds dependence on the network. Latency, compression artifacts, controller mapping, audio problems, and inconsistent frame delivery can matter in a competitive shooter. It is generally less suitable for ranked play than running the game directly on Windows.
3. Cloud gaming: conditional, not guaranteed
Cloud gaming may work if a provider currently lists PUBG, permits the required Steam or other account connection, supports your country, and allows the game’s anti-cheat environment. Availability changes by region, plan, game edition, and provider policy.

- PUBG is listed in your country.
- The supported edition matches your account.
- Linux browser or client access is available.
- The provider’s environment permits the game’s anti-cheat.
- The plan offers adequate session length and performance.
- Your internet connection can deliver stable low-latency streaming.
Do not assume that GeForce NOW, Boosteroid, Shadow, or another service supports PUBG without checking its current official catalog.
4. Virtual machines: an experimental option
A Windows virtual machine is a poor recommendation for a stable competitive setup. The game or anti-cheat may reject the hypervisor or virtual hardware, and GPU passthrough can be difficult to configure. Performance overhead, input and audio problems, driver interactions, and lack of official assurance from Krafton remain additional risks.
A VM may interest technical users as an experiment, but it is not a dependable replacement for native Windows play.

How to judge an unofficial method
If someone claims a community workaround works, check all of the following before treating it as usable:

- Does the method survive the latest game update?
- Is it permitted by Krafton’s rules?
- Does it avoid modifying protected files or processes?
A menu screenshot or an old community report does not answer these questions.
Troubleshooting: compatibility versus ordinary problems
If PUBG is installed through the supported Windows route, use the official PUBG Support hub and its technical-issues section. General steps include:
- Verify the integrity of the game files through Steam.
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the published requirements.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers.
- Check firewall and network configuration for connection problems.
- Follow PUBG’s specific guidance for crashes and anti-cheat errors.
These steps can resolve damaged files, driver failures, and connectivity problems. They do not turn an unsupported Linux anti-cheat configuration into an officially supported one.

Final verdict
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is not currently a reliable Linux or SteamOS game through Proton. The Windows requirement and KSS kernel-level anti-cheat are the reasons a simple Proton tweak should not be expected to solve it.

Treat VMs and unofficial compatibility methods as unsupported experiments, not dependable routes to competitive PUBG.
