Yes. Red Dead Redemption 2 works on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. PS5 runs the PS4 edition, while the Xbox consoles run the Xbox One edition. You do not need to purchase the game again when the digital license is tied to the same platform account, but physical discs require a console with the matching disc drive.
How compatibility works
Red Dead Redemption 2 was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. There is no separate current-generation edition identified in the official compatibility information covered here. The PS4 version runs on PS5
The PlayStation Store identifies the product as the PS4 Version. It is playable on PS5, but the store notice warns that some features available on PS4 may be absent on PS5. This is a compatibility listing rather than a promise of a native PS5 build.

The listing includes both Story Mode and Red Dead Online. It records Rockstar Games as publisher and the original release date as October 26, 2018. The PlayStation Store page also shows a 4.76/5 rating from 488,754 ratings in 2026; that rating describes the store listing and is not evidence of a PS5-specific technical upgrade.
Using a digital PS4 purchase
If you bought the digital PS4 game on your PlayStation account, sign in to that same account on PS5. Open your game library, select Red Dead Redemption 2 and choose the download option. The console should recognize the existing license rather than asking you to buy the game again. If the title is not shown, check that you are using the account that made the purchase and review the console’s game-library filters.
Using a PS4 disc
A PS4 disc can be used only in a PS5 model equipped with a disc drive. Insert the disc, allow the console to install the game and leave the disc inserted whenever you want to launch it; the disc acts as the ownership check. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot use a physical PS4 copy. Owners of that model need a digital license.

Xbox Series X|S: edition, licensing and discs
The Xbox One version runs through backward compatibility
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S run the Xbox One edition through backward compatibility. The Xbox listing includes Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode and Red Dead Online, along with the content associated with the Special and Ultimate Editions. Availability of a particular bonus therefore follows the edition attached to your Xbox purchase or disc.
Digital ownership
A digital Xbox One purchase is usable on Xbox Series X|S when you sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the license. On the console, open My games & apps, choose Full library and look under owned games, or find the title in the Microsoft Store while signed in. Select the install option for the owned copy. A Series S owner must use this digital route because that console is digital-only.
Physical Xbox copies
Xbox Series X has a disc drive and can read a compatible Xbox One Red Dead Redemption 2 disc. Insert the disc and install the game; keep the disc in the drive to verify ownership when playing. Xbox Series S cannot read discs, so an Xbox One disc does not provide access on that model. You need a digital license instead.

Do you have to buy the game again?
Usually, no. Digital ownership is attached to the platform account, so a PS4 digital license carries to PS5 through the same PlayStation account, and an Xbox One digital license carries to Xbox Series X|S through the same Microsoft account. The backward-compatible version is the entitlement you already own.

If you switch to one of those disc-free models, plan on buying or otherwise obtaining a digital copy.
Can you play Red Dead Online?

Red Dead Online is included with the PlayStation listing, and PlayStation online multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Story Mode remains available as a single-player option, so you do not need PlayStation Plus to play the campaign offline. The listing states support for up to 32 online players with PlayStation Plus.

Xbox Series X|S
The Xbox listing includes Red Dead Online as part of the compatible Xbox One product. You will need the Xbox subscription tier required by your account and region for console multiplayer, in addition to owning the game or the applicable online product. Because subscription names and requirements can change, check the multiplayer requirement shown on your console’s current store page before subscribing.
What changes on the newer consoles?
Compatibility is not the same as a remaster
Backward compatibility lets the original console version run on newer hardware. The official notices covered here do not promise a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S remaster, a 60-frames-per-second patch or a specific resolution upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2. Do not buy the game expecting those features solely because you are playing on a newer console.

Your console may provide general system-level benefits, such as faster storage access or more convenient resume behavior, but those are not the same as a developer-issued current-generation enhancement. Rockstar Games or the platform holder would need to publish a later update before a PS5- or Series-specific feature could be treated as official.

PS5 feature caveat
The PlayStation Store explicitly says that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5. The notice does not identify every missing feature in the information available here, so it is safer to treat the PS5 release as the compatible PS4 product rather than assume complete feature parity. If a particular peripheral, system integration or PS4-only function matters to you, verify that feature separately.

How to get playing
PS5 digital copy
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the digital PS4 license.
- Open the game library and locate Red Dead Redemption 2 under your collection or purchases.
- Select the download or install command and choose the available PS4 product.
- Install any required updates, then launch Story Mode or Red Dead Online.
- For online play, confirm that PlayStation Plus is active on the account being used.
PS5 disc copy
- Confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot read the game disc.
- Insert the PS4 disc and follow the installation prompts.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever you start the game, because it verifies ownership.
- Install updates before entering Story Mode or Red Dead Online.
Xbox Series X digital copy
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the digital Xbox One license.
- Open My games & apps, then Full library, and find the game in owned titles, or open its Microsoft Store page.
- Choose the install option for the owned Xbox One product.
- After installation and updates, select Story Mode or Red Dead Online.
Xbox Series X disc copy
- Use an Xbox Series X, because it has the disc drive required for a physical Xbox One copy.
- Insert the disc and let the console install the compatible game.
- Leave the disc inserted when launching the game to satisfy the ownership check.
Xbox Series S
- Use a digital Xbox license; the Series S has no disc drive.
- Sign in to the owning Microsoft account and install the game from your library or the Microsoft Store.
- Install updates and verify the subscription requirement before entering Red Dead Online.
Troubleshooting access problems
The console asks you to purchase the game again
- Check that you are signed in to the account that originally bought the digital copy.
- For a disc, confirm that the console has the correct drive and that the disc matches the platform: PS4 for PS5 or Xbox One for Xbox Series.
- Do not expect a disc to work on PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S; those systems require digital ownership.
- Refresh the library or restart the console after account verification so the entitlement can be checked again.
Red Dead Online is unavailable
- Verify that the game and its updates are installed completely.
- On PlayStation, confirm an active PlayStation Plus subscription; Story Mode does not require it.
- On Xbox, check the multiplayer subscription requirement displayed for your account and region.
- Make sure the platform service is signed in before launching the online mode.
A feature appears to be missing on PS5
The store warning allows for some PS4 features to be absent on PS5. Confirm whether the function is a PS4-specific feature before treating it as an installation fault. The available official information does not provide a complete feature-by-feature list, so a missing function cannot automatically be attributed to a damaged install or account problem.
Which console version should you choose?
Choose PS5 when
- You already own the PS4 digital license on your PlayStation account.
- You have a PS4 disc and own the disc-equipped PS5.
- Your multiplayer friends and subscription arrangement are on PlayStation.
Choose Xbox Series X when
- You own the Xbox One digital license or physical disc.
- You want to use an Xbox One disc on new hardware.
- Your existing online profile and multiplayer group are on Xbox.
Choose Xbox Series S only with a digital plan
Series S is suitable if you already have, or intend to buy, a digital Xbox license. It is not suitable for someone whose only copy is an Xbox One disc, because the console has no optical drive.
