Yes. The best current version for most players is Resident Evil HD Remaster, Capcom’s high-definition revision of the 2002 Nintendo GameCube remake. It is available on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with access on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles depending on the backward-compatible edition offered in your local store.
The original 1996 PlayStation game and the 2002 remake are still relevant for collectors and preservation, but they are not the straightforward modern purchase. The HD Remaster keeps the remake’s redesigned mansion, story content and fixed-camera survival-horror structure while adding widescreen presentation, higher-resolution visuals, remastered sound and alternate controls.

The short answer: buy Resident Evil HD Remaster
If you want to play the first Resident Evil on hardware released in the last decade, look for Resident Evil HD Remaster (also sold as Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER on PC). It is not a remaster of the 1996 PlayStation release. It is a remastered version of the 2002 remake, which was rebuilt from the ground up for Nintendo GameCube.
That distinction matters. The remake changes the original game’s environments, enemy behavior, puzzles, cutscenes and pacing while preserving the mansion-survival formula. The HD edition then improves image and audio output without turning the game into an over-the-shoulder action title. You still explore from fixed camera angles, conserve ammunition and healing items, solve inventory puzzles and decide when to risk returning through previously cleared rooms.

Resident Evil 1 has three important versions
Resident Evil (1996): the original PlayStation game
Capcom identifies the first Resident Evil as a 1996 release. This is the original PlayStation design: pre-rendered backgrounds, the first version of the Spencer Mansion story and the original cast of playable scenarios. Original discs and used copies are now mainly collector purchases. A disc’s region, condition and the hardware that can read it are as important as the game itself.
Resident Evil remake (2002): a ground-up GameCube rebuild
The 2002 Nintendo GameCube release is not simply the 1996 game with sharper graphics. Capcom rebuilt it from the ground up. Rooms were redesigned, new areas and puzzles were added, and the remake introduced mechanics and story details that became standard for later versions. The HD Remaster is based on this edition.
Resident Evil HD Remaster (2014–2015): the modern release
Capcom’s HD version launched in January 2015 for the worldwide PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC release; Steam lists 19 January 2015, while Capcom lists 20 January 2015. It updates the 2002 remake with high-resolution environments and characters, remastered audio and 5.1 surround output. Capcom reported worldwide sales above one million units in an April 24, 2015 press release.
Where you can play it today
| Platform | What is available | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER through Steam | Windows 10 minimum; verify your system meets the storage and DirectX requirements |
| PlayStation 4 | Resident Evil HD Remaster | Confirm the edition and language options shown by your regional PlayStation Store |
| PlayStation 5 | Play the PS4 edition when it is offered as backward compatible | Search the local PlayStation Store; Capcom’s platform listing names PS4 rather than a native PS5 SKU |
| Xbox One | Resident Evil HD Remaster | Check the regional Microsoft Store listing and account region |
| Xbox Series X|S | Use the Xbox One edition if backward compatibility is provided | Verify availability on your local Microsoft Store; do not assume a native Series release |
| Nintendo Switch | Switch edition in the same HD Remaster content family | Check the eShop listing for your region and whether you want digital or physical distribution |
| Original PlayStation or GameCube hardware | 1996 original or 2002 remake on used physical media | Confirm disc region, condition, console compatibility and whether required accessories work |
Platform availability can vary by territory and storefront policy. A store search is more reliable than assuming that a listing seen in another country will appear on your account.
What the HD Remaster changes
Higher-resolution presentation
The remaster raises the resolution of the environments and character assets created for the 2002 remake. The mansion’s pre-rendered backgrounds remain part of the visual design, but they are presented more cleanly on modern displays than the GameCube-era output.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
16:9 widescreen option
You can select a 16:9 presentation for contemporary televisions and monitors. Because the original scenes were composed for a narrower frame, widescreen can alter how much of a room is visible at once. Players who prefer the original composition can use the alternative display setting where offered.
Remastered audio and 5.1 output
Audio is remastered and supports 5.1 surround output. Headphone users still receive the directional cues that matter for doors, footsteps, enemy attacks and environmental effects, but the exact result depends on the console or PC audio configuration.
Two control schemes
The game includes the original-style control scheme and an alternate analog movement scheme. The original controls preserve the deliberate, direction-relative movement associated with the remake. The analog option makes movement feel more immediate for players accustomed to modern controllers. Neither scheme changes the fixed-camera structure or the underlying survival-horror difficulty.
Single-player fixed-camera survival horror
This remains a single-player game. Camera angles change as you cross room boundaries, and enemies can disappear from view while you reposition. Inventory slots are limited, ammunition is finite, and saving depends on the game’s established save-system rules. The HD label does not mean a modern action remake, open-world design or online mode.
Buying the PC version
Steam currently sells the Windows version. The listed requirements are modest by modern standards, but the operating-system requirement is specific enough to check before purchasing.

| Requirement | Steam listing |
|---|---|

| Memory | 2 GB RAM minimum |
| Storage | 20 GB available space |
| Graphics API | DirectX 9.0c minimum |

PC setup checklist
- Check that the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and has at least 20 GB of free storage.
- Install the game through Steam and allow the client to download any current files or updates.
- Connect an XInput-compatible controller if you want analog movement or a console-style layout. Keyboard and mouse remain supported.
- Open the game’s display settings and choose the aspect ratio and control scheme that suit your monitor and preference.
- If the game does not detect a controller, reconnect it before launching, confirm that Steam Input is enabled for the title, and test another XInput-compatible pad.
The minimum figures describe what the store lists, not a guarantee that every combination of graphics driver, monitor scaling and controller software will behave identically. Keep graphics drivers and Windows updates current if you encounter display or input problems.

Playing on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
PlayStation 4
Capcom documents a PlayStation 4 release of the HD Remaster. On PS4, search the PlayStation Store for the exact remaster title, then confirm the screenshots, edition and regional language information before purchase. The PS4 version is the edition Capcom names in its modern-console release record.
PlayStation 5
Capcom’s researched platform list names PS4, not a native PS5 version. To play on PS5, search the local PlayStation Store for the PS4 edition and check whether it can be downloaded or played through backward compatibility on your console. Availability can differ by country, account region and whether you are using a digital purchase or a compatible disc. Do not assume that a PS5-branded product page exists simply because the game runs on some PS5 systems.
Digital purchase versus disc
A digital PS4 purchase is the simplest route when the store presents it as playable on PS5. A physical PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive and still depends on the console’s compatibility support. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc.
Playing on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One
Capcom documents an Xbox One release. Use the Microsoft Store listing for your account region and verify that the product is the HD Remaster rather than a different entry in the series.

Xbox Series X|S
Capcom’s release record names Xbox One rather than a native Xbox Series X|S version. On a Series console, search the Microsoft Store and look for the Xbox One edition’s backward-compatibility information. The listing is the authoritative check for your territory, console model and purchase method.
Disc considerations
Xbox Series X can use compatible Xbox One discs; Xbox Series S has no disc drive. If the store offers the game digitally, that is the practical route for Series S owners. Confirm the backward-compatible designation before buying a used disc from another region.
Nintendo Switch edition
Capcom’s Switch documentation identifies a Nintendo Switch edition in the same HD Remaster content family. It retains the remake’s single-player structure, fixed-camera presentation, widescreen option, remastered audio and control choices. Check the Nintendo eShop for your country because pricing, language support and physical distribution can differ between regions.
Switch is useful if you want handheld play or a console that does not require the backward-compatibility checks associated with PS5 and Xbox Series. It is still the remake-based HD version, not the 1996 PlayStation game.

Choose the HD Remaster when you want to play the game
- You want the easiest current purchase on PC, PS4, Xbox One or Switch.
- You want widescreen output, remastered audio and modern controller support.
- You want the expanded 2002 remake rather than the original PlayStation design.
- You need a version that can potentially run on PS5 or Xbox Series through the listed backward-compatible edition.
Choose the 1996 original when preservation is the priority
- You are studying the first release’s original pacing, room layouts and presentation.
- You collect PlayStation software and accept the cost and maintenance of used physical media.
- You have compatible original hardware or a legitimate method of running the regional disc you own.
Choose the 2002 GameCube remake when collecting matters
- You want the remake in its original GameCube form.
- You value original packaging, manuals or hardware-specific display output.
- You accept that used copies require checks for disc condition, region and console compatibility.
For a first playthrough, the HD Remaster is generally the practical choice because it contains the remake lineage while removing most of the hardware barriers associated with older discs.

Used and physical buying: checks that prevent expensive mistakes
- Identify the exact release. Listings may say “Resident Evil 1” while referring to the 1996 original, the 2002 remake or the HD Remaster. Look for the subtitle and platform on the case or product page.
- Check the region. PlayStation and GameCube discs can be region-specific, and language options can vary. Ask for a clear photograph of the disc label and case information.
- Inspect condition. Scratches, disc rot, missing manuals and damaged cases affect both playability and collector value. A seller’s statement that a disc is “tested” does not replace checking the actual condition.
- Confirm hardware. A PS1 disc needs a compatible PlayStation system or approved compatible hardware. A GameCube disc needs compatible GameCube hardware. A PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S cannot accept physical discs.
- Compare the total cost. Add shipping, replacement memory cards or controllers, and any adapter required for your display. A cheap disc can become the more expensive way to play.
Common buying and compatibility pitfalls
Mistaking the HD Remaster for a native current-generation release
Store pages may show the game as playable on a newer console while the underlying product remains a PS4 or Xbox One edition. Check the compatibility label and product details. This avoids paying for a supposed PS5 or Xbox Series SKU that does not exist.
Buying the wrong “Resident Evil 1”
Search results can mix the 1996 original, the 2002 remake and the HD Remaster. Confirm the release year, platform and title before checkout. If the listing does not identify those details, ask the seller or choose a clearer listing.
Expecting modern third-person controls
The HD Remaster keeps fixed cameras. Select the alternate analog scheme if the original directional controls feel unfamiliar, but do not expect free camera movement or an over-the-shoulder view.

Capcom’s documented platforms do not guarantee identical availability in every country. Search your own PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop or Steam account before relying on a price or compatibility claim seen elsewhere.
Controller detection problems on PC
Use an XInput-compatible controller, connect it before launching, and review the game’s Steam Input settings. If keyboard and mouse work but the pad does not, test the controller in another XInput title to distinguish a game setting from a hardware or driver issue.
Which version should you buy?
| Your situation | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time player on a modern system | HD Remaster | Most accessible remake-based version with current display, audio and control options |
| Windows player | Steam HD Remaster | Clear system requirements, keyboard and mouse support, and XInput controller support |
| PS5 owner | PS4 HD Remaster, if the local store marks it backward compatible | Capcom lists PS4; the store confirms whether your PS5 can run it |
| Xbox Series owner | Xbox One HD Remaster, if the local store marks it backward compatible | Capcom lists Xbox One; Series access depends on the compatibility listing |
| Switch player | Switch HD Remaster | Official Switch edition with the remake-based HD content |
| Historian or collector | 1996 PlayStation or 2002 GameCube physical copy | Preserves the original release or the remake’s original hardware version |
The practical verdict is straightforward: buy Resident Evil HD Remaster unless your goal is specifically to own or study the 1996 original or the 2002 GameCube release. Before purchasing on PS5 or Xbox Series, verify the PS4 or Xbox One edition in your regional store rather than assuming a native current-generation SKU.
