Sometimes—but only when the specific game supports crossplay between your platforms and editions. “Co-op” describes a way to play together; it does not guarantee that a Steam copy can connect to a console version or a copy bought from another PC store.
There is a separate option for some games: Steam Remote Play Together streams supported local multiplayer sessions to Steam Friends. It can let friends join remotely, but it is not a general Steam-to-console or Steam-to-other-store crossplay feature.
What to check before inviting your friends
- Verify the exact platform combination. Look for an official statement that names both platforms. “PC crossplay” may not say whether different PC storefronts are included, and support for one console pairing does not prove support for every other pairing.
- Check the edition and update version. Some games require players to be on compatible releases. Iron Gate’s 2022 Valheim crossplay announcement advises players to use the same patch version because a mismatch can prevent connections.
- Find out how joining works. Depending on the game, you may need an external account and display name, an in-game friends list, a join code, or a server with crossplay enabled.
- Check host, party-size, and content restrictions. Some games make limits depend on the host’s platform or require compatible installed content. Mods may also affect whether players can join.
- Confirm current support with the publisher. Announcements and FAQs can become outdated; check the game’s current official support information or its in-game crossplay settings for your specific platform pair.
Crossplay and Steam Remote Play Together are different
Native crossplay
Native crossplay is a game feature that lets players on specified platforms connect to one another. The developer or publisher determines which platforms, editions, accounts, versions, and multiplayer methods are supported. A game’s presence on Steam, or its co-op label, does not establish that support.
Steam Remote Play Together
Valve describes Remote Play Together as a way to invite Steam Friends into a supported local multiplayer session by streaming the game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says only the host needs to own and install the game, while other players connect through Steam Remote Play streaming. This is remote access to a local multiplayer session, not a general-purpose connection to console copies or another store’s version. The documentation describes invitations to Steam Friends, so do not assume it covers friends who cannot use Steam.

How requirements differ between games
Official examples show why it is important to check the game rather than rely on a general Steam rule.
| Game | Platforms and joining details in the cited official information | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Iron Gate’s 2022 Steam announcement describes cross-platform play and joining mixed-platform sessions with a code. | Dedicated-server hosts must enable crossplay for non-Steam players. Players should use the same patch version. The announcement says the crossplay server parameter uses PlayFab instead of Steamworks; its details are from 2022 and do not establish every current pairing or requirement. |
| Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands | 2K’s Steam-hosted FAQ lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store for online crossplay. It says crossplay uses SHiFT Matchmaking. | The FAQ describes an opt-in prompt and a required Crossplay Display Name. These are requirements for this game, not for Steam crossplay generally. |
| Farming Simulator 22 | Its Steam-hosted FAQ lists PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia. | The FAQ says player limits depend on the host platform and discusses compatible installed content and mod restrictions. It is historical and mentions Stadia; that old list should not be read as evidence of current Stadia availability. |
A practical way to compare games for a mixed-platform group
- Platforms and storefronts: Confirm the exact consoles and PC stores that can connect.
- Joining method: Find out whether friends join through a friend list, an external account, a code, or a server.
- Accounts and opt-in: Check whether everyone needs to link or create an account, enter a display name, or enable crossplay.
- Versions and content: Look for requirements involving patches, editions, DLC, mods, or other installed content.
- Host rules: Check whether the host’s platform controls player limits or server settings.
These checks are more reliable than assuming that “co-op,” “multiplayer,” or “PC crossplay” means your particular group can connect. The three game FAQs above are examples, not a complete or continuously updated catalog of compatible Steam titles.
