Yes—if you prepare first. Steam Offline Mode lets you launch eligible installed games without an active Steam Network connection. It does not make every Steam game playable offline: games with mandatory online services, an external launcher that requires sign-in, or an unfinished first-time setup will still fail. Prepare each title while online, then test it before you lose connectivity.
What Steam Offline Mode actually does
Offline Mode is a Steam client state for playing supported games without reconnecting to Steam every time. Steam describes it this way: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” The mode uses the files and authentication information already stored on your computer; it is not a way to download a game, verify a new installation, or bypass a game’s own network requirement.

Eligibility is determined per game. A fully installed title may still require an online login, a publisher account, an anti-cheat service, or a separate launcher. Conversely, an installed single-player game that completes its first launch while online can usually start and save locally in Offline Mode.
Steam also warns that “Any Steam client feature that requires a connection will be unavailable while offline.” That includes community communication, cloud synchronization, and update delivery, even though the game itself may continue to run.

Prepare Steam before you leave the internet
Use Steam’s complete preparation sequence. Skipping a step is a common reason a game refuses to start on a flight, train, or unreliable connection.
- Sign in while online and select “Remember me.” Steam needs locally stored sign-in information to enter Offline Mode later.
- Finish every download. Let Steam update the client and the games you intend to use. A queued workshop item, shader download, or game patch can leave the installation in an incomplete state.
- Launch each game once while online. Start the title from your Library and wait through any installation, first-run configuration, redistributable setup, entitlement check, or external-launcher sign-in. Reach the main menu or a playable session, then exit normally.
- Check the credential setting. Open Steam > Settings > Security and make sure “Don’t save account credentials on this computer” is not selected. If credentials are not stored, Steam may be unable to authenticate you offline.
- Switch deliberately to Offline Mode. Open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline. Confirm the restart or relaunch prompt and wait for Steam to reopen in offline status.
- Test the exact setup. With networking disabled, restart Steam, open the game, load a save, create a small new save, quit, and launch it again. This verifies the real machine, installation, account, and game version you will use away from the internet.
Close Steam normally after the test. A forced shutdown or suspended update can leave the client in a state that is not ready for offline use. Before a long trip, test while you still have time to reconnect and repair the installation.
Which Steam games can work offline?
There is no permanent Steam-wide list. Offline behavior can change when a game updates, changes DRM, adds an external launcher, or alters its authentication policy. Evaluate each game against the following questions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Check | Offline-friendly result | Offline blocker or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory connection | The game offers a local single-player mode after its first online launch. | The game requires a live server for the main menu, authentication, or gameplay. |
| External launcher or DRM | Any required component is installed and can start with cached credentials. | A publisher client, DRM service, or anti-cheat service insists on an online sign-in. |
| First launch | Initial entitlement checks and setup completed online and the game reached its menu. | The first launch has never been completed, or an installer is waiting for a download. |
| Save location | Progress is stored in local files on the computer. | Progress exists only on a remote account or requires a live service to save. |
| Multiplayer | Same-device or supported local-network play that does not need Steam’s online services. | Online matchmaking, dedicated servers, or an account service is required. |
| Update cadence | The current build remains playable until you can reconnect. | A frequent mandatory patch or version check may stop an older build from launching. |
The safest rule is practical rather than theoretical: if the game cannot complete a full start, save, quit, and restart while your computer is disconnected, do not rely on it offline.
What continues to work in Offline Mode
Installed single-player games
An installed game that supports offline operation can launch from the Steam Library after preparation. Local single-player campaigns, skirmishes, puzzles, and other self-contained modes generally remain available. Steam itself does not determine every in-game feature; the game’s design decides whether a menu, mission, or progression system calls a network service.
Local saves
Games that write saves to the computer can continue to record progress without internet access. You can create new saves, overwrite existing local saves, and load them later on that same machine, subject to the game’s own save system and storage permissions. Keep enough disk space available, and exit the game normally so its final save is written.

Offline use without repeated sign-ins
The purpose of Offline Mode is that an eligible, prepared game does not need a fresh Steam Network connection at every launch. You can open Steam, choose the title, and play while the computer has no Wi-Fi or wired connection.
What stops working or waits until you reconnect
Friends, Chat, and community features
Going offline signs you out of Steam’s community services. Friends lists, Steam Chat, presence updates, invitations, community pages, and other online-dependent communication features are unavailable. Messages or activity that occur while you are disconnected do not become a live conversation until Steam reconnects.
Steam Cloud synchronization
Steam Cloud does not upload or download saves in Offline Mode. A local save can still be created, but it remains on that computer until you reconnect. If Cloud is enabled for the game, Steam may warn of a Cloud conflict after you go online again because the local save and the stored cloud copy have different timestamps or contents.
When that warning appears, compare the dates and progress represented by each copy before choosing. Selecting the older version can replace newer progress. If you deliberately want the machine’s files to remain authoritative, make a backup of the local save first and then choose the option that preserves the local data. You can also disable Steam Cloud for an individual game; in that case, progress remains local to that computer and will not be synchronized to another device.
Steam and game updates
Offline Mode prevents Steam and installed games from receiving important updates. That includes security fixes, compatibility changes, bug fixes, and patches that may be required by the game’s servers. Reconnect before travel to finish downloads, and reconnect periodically afterward so the client and games do not remain stale.
LAN game-file transfers
Steam’s local-network transfer feature is not available when either client is in Offline Mode. Both Steam clients must be online and able to see each other directly on the same LAN. Being connected to the same router is not enough if one client has deliberately entered Offline Mode.

Games built around online services
A title that requires a live server, online entitlement check, publisher account, or external launcher cannot be made playable merely by selecting Go Offline. Competitive online games, persistent online worlds, and games whose menus are server-backed are typical examples of software that will not function without their required service. The exact requirement belongs to the game, not to Steam’s offline switch.
Do Steam saves work without internet?
They can, but only as local saves. Offline play does not erase the game’s normal save process; it removes the network connection that would copy those files to Steam Cloud. A useful way to think about it is:
- Local save: written to the computer and usable offline.
- Steam Cloud copy: synchronized only after Steam reconnects.
- Other computer: cannot receive the offline progress until synchronization or a manual save transfer occurs.
Do not assume that a save visible in one game is cloud-backed. Check the game’s Steam Cloud setting and its own documentation, and keep a manual backup if the progress matters. Reconnecting can present a conflict rather than automatically selecting the copy you intended.

Can you play Steam games on a plane or without Wi-Fi?
Yes, provided the computer is prepared before boarding and the game passes the offline test. Airplane mode, disabled Wi-Fi, or a location with no service does not prevent a prepared offline-capable game from launching. It does prevent chat, cloud synchronization, updates, Steam-based matchmaking, and any game feature that needs a server.
For a trip, download all intended games and patches, complete their first launches, switch Steam to Offline Mode while still online, and test again with networking disabled. Do not wait until the airport to discover that a title opens an external launcher or demands a one-time authentication.

Steam asks you to sign in
Reconnect if possible, sign in with Remember me enabled, verify that “Don’t save account credentials on this computer” is off under Steam > Settings > Security, then enter Offline Mode from the Steam menu. If the computer was never successfully authenticated online, Offline Mode may not have the information it needs.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The game says an update is required
Reconnect and let Steam finish the client and game updates. Launch the game once after updating, exit normally, and repeat the offline test. An old build may be refused by the game itself even if Steam’s files are present.
An external launcher appears
Reconnect, complete the launcher’s installation and sign-in requirements, and test with the network disabled. If the launcher always requires a live service, the game is not suitable for offline use; Steam cannot override that dependency.
The game opens but a mode or save is missing
That feature probably depends on an online service, cloud data, or a server-side account. Check whether the game offers a local alternative, and verify that the save was created on this computer before disconnecting.
Cloud reports a conflict after reconnecting
Stop and inspect both versions before selecting one. Back up the local save first if the progress is valuable. Choose deliberately; accepting the wrong copy can replace newer progress.
A practical offline-play checklist
- Steam signed in online with Remember me selected.
- All client and game downloads completed.
- Every intended game launched successfully once online.
- First-run installers, external launchers, and account checks completed.
- Credential saving enabled in Steam > Settings > Security.
- Steam switched to Go Offline and restarted successfully.
- Each game tested with networking disabled, including loading and creating a save.
- Important local saves backed up before travel.
- Time reserved to reconnect and resolve any Cloud conflict afterward.
Offline eligibility is not permanent. A later game update, launcher change, or DRM-policy change can alter the result, so repeat the test whenever the title or its required services change.
