Yes. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection supports online play on Nintendo Switch, but online versus is limited to four included games: Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition (the overseas Hyper Fighting/Champion Edition release), Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.
You need broadband internet, a Nintendo Account, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists the Switch version as supporting two to four players online. The collection also supports one to two players on one console and two to eight through local wireless, so the best setup depends on whether everyone is in the same room.

Which Street Fighter games in the collection work online?
Capcom’s support information identifies four overseas versions as online-capable. The collection contains 12 titles in Japanese and overseas versions, but the online feature is not available across the entire package. Selecting one of the other games, or selecting a Japanese version that is not identified as online-capable, will not give you the same online-versus option.

| Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition | Yes | This is the overseas release associated with the Hyper Fighting/Champion Edition version. The overseas release uses English text. |
| Super Street Fighter II Turbo | Yes | Online matchmaking and custom-lobby play are available for the overseas version. |
| Street Fighter Alpha 3 | Yes | It is one of the four games Capcom lists for online play. |
| Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike | Yes | The overseas version supports online versus and custom lobbies. |
| All other included titles or versions | Not listed as online-capable | They can still be used for the collection’s other features, but Capcom does not identify them as supported online-versus games. |
Names can look slightly different between Capcom’s announcement and the in-game menu. Capcom’s launch announcement calls the first supported game Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, while its support documentation identifies the overseas version as Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition. Treat those references as the same online-capable slot when choosing a game in the Switch collection.

What you need before starting
Online play is straightforward once the account and network requirements are in place. Check these items before launching the collection:
- A Nintendo Switch connected to broadband internet. A wireless or wired connection is acceptable as long as the console can reach Nintendo’s online service.
- A Nintendo Account. The Switch user launching the game must be linked to an account that can use online services.
- A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo requires an active paid membership for online play in this collection. A Nintendo Account by itself is not enough.
- The game installed on the console. Nintendo lists the Switch download size as 5 GB. Available storage can change with system data and updates, so leave more free space than the listed package size.
- Compatible controllers for local play. If multiple people are sharing one console, Nintendo says an additional compatible controller may be required for each player.
The game was released for Switch on 29 May 2018, with Capcom listed as publisher. Those product details identify the Switch edition; they do not indicate that every included game has online support.
How many people can play?
Nintendo publishes three separate multiplayer limits for this version. They describe different connection methods, not three settings inside the same match.
| Connection method | Nintendo’s player count | Hardware and service requirement |
|---|---|---|
| One Switch system | 1–2 players | One console and one compatible controller per person. |
| Local wireless | 2–8 players | Players use compatible Switch systems connected through local wireless; each person needs the game and a controller. |
| Online | 2–4 players | Broadband internet, a Nintendo Account, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
The online figure means Nintendo supports an online session of two to four players. Street Fighter matches themselves remain versus bouts rather than four fighters appearing in one round. A custom lobby can include participants and spectators, with the lobby owner controlling how many people may join.
Step-by-step: start an online match
- Connect the Switch to broadband. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings and verify that the console is connected to the intended Wi-Fi or wired network. If the connection test fails, fix that before opening the game.
- Check the account and membership. Confirm that the active Switch user is linked to a Nintendo Account and that the account has a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. If several people use the console, check the specific user profile that will launch the collection.
- Launch the collection. Start Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and choose the user who will play online.
- Select an online-capable title. Choose Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, or Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. If the menu offers Japanese and overseas versions, choose the overseas version identified for online play. These versions use English text.
- Open that game’s online area. Enter the selected title’s online-play menu rather than its ordinary single-player or local-versus option.
- Choose matchmaking or a custom lobby. Use the available search option for a ranked or casual-style match when you want the service to find an opponent. Choose a custom lobby when you want to control the game, version, region, rules, or participants.
- Confirm the connection. When a match is found or another player joins your lobby, complete the on-screen confirmation and select your character as prompted. Keep the console connected until the match ends.
The exact labels can differ between the four games, but the important decision is made at step four: online support is title-specific. Entering the collection’s general menus does not make all 12 games available online.

How to play with a friend in a custom lobby
A custom lobby is the most controlled option for arranging a private session. Capcom’s online manual documents settings for the game, version, region, lobby title, event and rule options, first-to score, participant limit, and who may start matches. It also documents spectator support.
- Create the lobby. From the selected game’s online area, choose the option to create a custom lobby.
- Choose the game and version. Set the exact title your friend should launch. Both players must select the same online-capable game and compatible version.
- Set the region. Choose the region setting you want the lobby to use. A friend searching with a different region filter may not see the room.
- Give the lobby a clear title. Use a distinctive title that your friend can recognize in the lobby list. Avoid changing it while the other player is searching.
- Set match rules. Configure the event or rule settings and the first-to score to match the kind of session you want. A first-to value determines how many games are needed to win the set.
- Set the participant limit. Keep the limit high enough for every intended player and spectator, but low enough to avoid admitting unwanted participants.
- Choose who can start matches. The documented lobby controls let you decide who may begin a match. Set this deliberately if one person is organizing a rotation.
- Have the friend search and join. The friend should open the same game’s online menu, use the custom-lobby search, and match the room’s game, version, region, and title. Once the room appears, they can join and wait for the host’s match start.
Capcom’s online manual describes creating and joining rooms rather than promising a universal console-level invitation notification. If your friend cannot see the room, compare every search field first instead of assuming the membership or internet connection is the problem.

Automatic matchmaking
Matchmaking is the quickest route when you do not need to choose a specific opponent. Select the title you want, enter its online area, and use the ranked or casual-style search option where it is offered. The service chooses an available opponent according to its search rules.
This option is useful for a solo player, but Nintendo and Capcom do not publish a current Switch matchmaking population, average wait time, or a guarantee that an opponent will be available at a particular hour. Do not interpret a long search as proof that your console is misconfigured.
Custom rooms
Custom rooms are better for a friend group, a practice night, or a rotation in which players want to watch matches. They expose the settings that automatic searches hide: the title and version, region, event or rule settings, first-to score, participant limit, and match-start permissions. Spectator support allows people in the room to follow a match without being one of the two active fighters.

Local multiplayer options on Switch
You do not need Nintendo Switch Online when everyone is playing locally. Nintendo separates local play into one-system and local-wireless modes.

One Switch supports one to two players. Assign a compatible controller to each person before entering local versus. The console’s bundled controllers may be sufficient, but Nintendo’s specification still applies: each player needs a compatible controller, so an extra controller may be necessary depending on how the console is equipped.
Several nearby consoles
Local wireless supports two to eight players. This is the larger in-person option and does not use an internet matchmaking room, although every participant needs a compatible Switch setup and the relevant game installation. Choose local wireless when the group is together and wants to avoid a paid online membership.
Local wireless and online are separate modes. A room made for local wireless will not appear in the internet lobby list, and an online room cannot be joined through the local-wireless menu.
Use Training Mode before going online
Capcom’s launch announcement specifically lists Training Mode for Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Those are the same four game families supported for online play, with the first one labeled as the overseas Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition in Capcom’s support documentation.

Training Mode is useful for more than learning a combo. Before entering a lobby, use it to confirm that your controller inputs register correctly, practice the character’s basic anti-air and reversal options, and make sure the display and audio settings are comfortable. Because each game has different systems and timing, practice in the exact title you intend to play rather than assuming skills transfer perfectly between entries.

You selected the wrong game
Only the four titles listed above are identified as online-capable. If you opened another game in the 12-title collection, return to the collection menu and choose one of the supported entries.
You selected a different regional version
Capcom identifies the overseas versions for online play and notes that those versions use English text. If the menu presents Japanese and overseas releases separately, switch to the supported overseas entry.
The Nintendo Account or membership is not active
Online play requires both the account setup and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the user profile launching the game, not only another profile on the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe network connection is unavailable
Run the Switch connection test and confirm broadband access. A console can open the collection while still failing to reach the online service if the network has dropped or the connection test is unsuccessful.

Your friend cannot find the room
Compare the custom lobby’s game, version, region, title, and search settings. Also check the participant limit and whether the room is already full. Both players should enter the online area of the same supported title before searching.
A search takes a long time
There is no official current population figure, average wait-time measurement, or guaranteed lobby availability published for the Switch version in Nintendo’s published product information. A slow search can reflect the number of players online at that moment; it is not a published indication of a fault.
Can four people play Street Fighter Collection online?
Yes, Nintendo lists online support for two to four players. Four people can therefore use an online session or custom lobby, subject to the room’s participant limit and the game’s lobby rules. The active fight remains a versus battle, while additional people can take turns or spectate when the lobby settings allow it.
If your goal is four people playing in the same physical room, local wireless supports up to eight players and may be the better fit. If everyone is in different locations, use one of the four online-capable games and create a custom lobby with a participant limit that covers all players and spectators.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Recommended mode | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want a random opponent | Matchmaking | It searches for an available player without requiring you to coordinate a room. |
| You want to play a specific friend remotely | Custom lobby | You can set the title, version, region, rules, first-to score, and participant limit. |
| Two people share one Switch | Single-system local play | Nintendo lists one to two players on one console; Nintendo Switch Online is not needed for this local mode. |
| A group is together with several Switch systems | Local wireless | Nintendo lists two to eight players locally. |
| You want to practice before a match | Training Mode | Capcom lists Training Mode in all four games that support online play. |
What is and is not guaranteed
The Switch edition definitely has online play, but that feature is narrower than the collection’s title count suggests. Four overseas versions support online versus; the remaining included games and versions are not identified as online-capable by Capcom’s support information. Nintendo’s published online player range is two to four, while local wireless has the larger two-to-eight range.
Nintendo and Capcom do not establish the current number of active Switch players, how quickly a search should find an opponent, or whether a lobby will be available at a particular time. Plan a custom room with friends when guaranteed participation matters, and use local wireless when the group is physically together.
