Can You Play Street Fighter 6 on the Same Console With Friends?

Yes. Street Fighter 6 supports two people playing against each other on one console through Fighting Ground’s local Versus mode. Connect two compatible controllers, open Fighting Ground from the main menu, select Versus, assign one controller to each player, choose fighters and a stage, and start the match. You do not need to enter Battle Hub for a basic couch-versus game.

Battle Hub is Street Fighter 6’s online social and matchmaking space. Internet access and a Capcom ID apply to online-only features described by the PlayStation store listing, whereas the local-versus match is a same-device activity. Exact menu wording and controller-pairing screens can differ between PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and the Switch 2 edition.

What local multiplayer in Street Fighter 6 includes

Capcom describes Fighting Ground as the traditional fighting-game portion of Street Fighter 6. Its modes include local versus battles, alongside options such as Arcade and Training. In local Versus, both fighters are controlled by people using input devices connected to the same system. The game is not streaming one player in from another machine, and it does not use Battle Hub’s online lobby.

The official Versus documentation explains that a player can battle either the CPU or another human player. That wording applies directly to a two-person couch match: one person takes Player 1’s side, the other takes Player 2’s side, and the console runs the fight locally. The Switch 2 manual separately documents the same human-versus-human concept and Joy-Con support for that edition.

CAPCOM Street Fighter 6 (PS5)
  • Stunning visuals and an all new battle system depicts the world of Street Fighter with unprecedented detail.
  • For the first time ever, SF6 provides an ever evolving immersive storytelling experience that gives power to the player to create their own World Warrior and truly engage in the Street Fighter Universe
  • SF6 provides the gold standard fighting experience for both casual and battle-tested pros can enjoy for years to come.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC content may not work unless using an EU Playstation account as stated this is an EU Import Region Free Version

Local play is useful when you want a quick match without matchmaking, an internet connection, or an online lobby. It also lets both people share the same screen and take turns immediately, which is why Fighting Ground is the correct starting point for a living-room session.

How to start a two-player couch match

  1. Connect two compatible controllers. Pair or plug both devices into the same console or computer before launching the match. On Switch 2, the official manual documents Joy-Con support; other editions use the controller types supported by their platform.
  2. Open Street Fighter 6’s main menu. Look for Fighting Ground, the game’s traditional fighting section.
  3. Choose Versus. Select the local Versus option rather than Battle Hub. Platform or language differences can change the exact wording, but the destination is the offline fight mode inside Fighting Ground.
  4. Assign the inputs. Move or press a button on each controller when the game asks for Player 1 and Player 2. If only one side responds, return to the controller settings and confirm that the second device is recognized by the operating system or console.
  5. Select characters and a stage. Each person chooses a fighter, then you confirm the arena and match settings shown by your edition.
  6. Start the battle. Once both selections are confirmed, the round loads locally. You can return to character select after the match to run another game without entering Battle Hub.

Some menus place Versus one level deeper inside Fighting Ground, and translations can use slightly different labels. If you see several Fighting Ground variants, choose the one explicitly marked Versus or local versus.

Local Versus and Battle Hub are different ways to play

Feature Fighting Ground local Versus Battle Hub
Where the opponents are Two people at the same console or PC Players using online systems and a shared online space
Connection Designed for a same-device match; an internet connection is not part of the local-versus concept Internet access is needed for online-only content identified by the PlayStation listing
Accounts No Capcom ID is identified as necessary for the basic couch match The PlayStation listing says a Capcom ID is required for online-only content
Input arrangement Two compatible controllers connected to one system Each remote player uses a separate online system and controller
Best use Instant head-to-head play in the same room Meeting other players and using online features

Do not launch Battle Hub merely because you want to fight the person sitting next to you. Battle Hub’s purpose is online social play; Fighting Ground’s Versus mode is the direct route to a couch match.

Do you need internet, PS Plus, Xbox online, or a Capcom ID?

For the basic local-versus activity, the official material does not identify an online subscription or Capcom ID as a prerequisite. The PlayStation store listing does warn that certain elements are online-only, require an internet connection, and require a Capcom ID. Those conditions describe online content rather than the existence of a local match in Fighting Ground.

That distinction matters on a shared console. You can set up two controllers and play the local fight without signing into Battle Hub. If the game prompts for a network connection or account while you are navigating an online feature, back out and select Fighting Ground’s Versus mode instead. Platform policies and edition-specific services can change, so consult the store page or manual for your exact release if a system-level subscription prompt appears.

Choosing Classic, Modern, or Dynamic controls

Classic controls

Classic is the traditional control layout. It gives each fighter the full command approach associated with a conventional Street Fighter game and is available throughout Fighting Ground. It suits players who already know the series or want the complete motion-and-button system.

Modern controls

Modern simplifies some inputs while remaining a standard Street Fighter 6 control type. Capcom lists Modern as available in Fighting Ground, so one person can use it while the other uses Classic. That can reduce the experience gap when two people have different levels of fighting-game experience.

Dynamic controls

Capcom’s support article describes Dynamic Controls as intended for friends and family visiting for quick, casual games. They are designed to make a short, approachable match easier to start. Dynamic is limited to offline play in certain Fighting Ground modes, so it is the option to try for a casual couch session rather than an online Battle Hub match. If Dynamic is unavailable in a particular mode, select Classic or Modern instead.

Control-type choice is independent for each player. Before the round begins, check that both people understand which layout they selected; a player expecting Classic inputs can otherwise mistake the simplified commands for a controller problem.

Platform and controller notes

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4

Capcom announced PS5 and PS4 versions, and the PlayStation store listing identifies both editions. Pair two supported wireless controllers or connect them by cable, then verify that each is assigned to a separate local user or player slot as the console requests. The store listing’s online-only warning applies to specific network features, not to the basic instruction to choose local Versus in Fighting Ground.

Xbox Series X|S

The announced Xbox version is for Xbox Series X|S. Use two Xbox-compatible controllers recognized by the console, then follow the Fighting Ground and Versus path. If the second pad controls the system menu but not the game, open the console’s accessories or profile screen and confirm that it is active before returning to Street Fighter 6.

PC

Capcom announced a PC version. Two compatible gamepads can be connected through USB or wireless methods supported by the computer. Windows may show both devices even when the game has assigned only one; test each controller at the player-assignment screen and close other software that could be remapping or claiming a gamepad.

Switch 2 edition

The official Switch 2 manual documents Versus against another human and specifically covers Joy-Con support. Attach or pair the two Joy-Con devices according to the console’s controller screen, then select Fighting Ground and Versus. Because the Switch 2 edition has its own manual and control behavior, use that edition’s instructions if a button prompt or menu name differs from another platform.

Across all platforms, the exact pairing procedure belongs to the console or operating system. Street Fighter 6 can only assign devices that the platform has already recognized.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

What you need for a local match

  • A supported copy of Street Fighter 6 for the platform you are using.
  • One console or PC running the game.
  • Two compatible controllers or supported input devices, one for each player.
  • A display that both people can see and enough space for the controllers.
  • Fighting Ground access; Battle Hub is not required for the couch-versus route.

Keyboard-and-controller combinations on PC depend on how the PC edition exposes local inputs. If the game does not register a second device, first confirm that the operating system lists it and then test it in Street Fighter 6’s player-assignment screen.

Troubleshooting when the second player cannot join

The game shows only one controller

Pause at the platform’s controller screen, disconnect and reconnect the second device, and make sure it has power. On a wireless controller, check pairing rather than assuming that a lit indicator means the game has assigned it. Reopen Street Fighter 6 after both devices are visible to the system if the game was launched before the second controller was connected.

Both controllers move the same menu cursor

Many platforms use a primary controller for menus until the Versus screen. Enter Fighting Ground’s Versus option and press a button on the second device when the game asks for Player 2. If both devices remain linked to one player slot, unassign the duplicate profile in the console’s controller settings and repeat the assignment.

Versus is not visible

Confirm that you opened Fighting Ground rather than Battle Hub. Menu labels can vary by language and platform, and Versus may appear after selecting Fighting Ground instead of on the first main-menu screen. If you are using a special edition, consult its platform-specific manual for the exact route.

A network or account prompt appears

You have probably entered an online-only feature. Return to the main menu and choose Fighting Ground, then its local Versus option. The PlayStation listing associates internet access and a Capcom ID with online-only content; those prompts are not evidence that a basic couch match must use Battle Hub.

Dynamic Controls are unavailable

Dynamic is restricted to offline play in certain Fighting Ground modes. Select Classic or Modern for that mode, or move to the offline Fighting Ground activity where Dynamic is offered.

Making a couch session work well

Set up both inputs before choosing fighters

Connect both controllers before opening character select. This avoids interrupting the match to pair a device and makes it clear which side belongs to which person.

Match control types to experience

A newcomer may prefer Modern or, where available, Dynamic, while an experienced player uses Classic. Agree on the layouts before the first round so the control difference is intentional rather than confusing.

Use Fighting Ground for a quick rematch

After a bout, stay in the local Versus flow and return to character or stage selection. There is no reason to visit Battle Hub between couch matches unless you specifically want an online feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the edition before troubleshooting

Controller names, menu labels and supported devices are edition-specific. The announced platforms are PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the Switch 2 manual separately documents its own Versus and Joy-Con behavior. Troubleshooting advice for one platform may not match another platform’s pairing screen.

What local Versus does not provide

Local Versus is not an online tournament, ranked matchmaking queue or shared Battle Hub lobby. Both participants must be present at the same system, and each needs a compatible input device. If a friend is in another location, you need an online feature instead, with the internet and account requirements that apply to that feature.

Local play also does not imply that every Fighting Ground mode supports every control type. Dynamic’s offline limitation is a specific example; Classic and Modern are the broadly available choices within Fighting Ground.

Bottom line for a two-person match

Street Fighter 6 does have couch multiplayer. Connect two supported controllers, open Fighting Ground, choose local Versus, assign one device to each player, and begin the fight. Keep Battle Hub separate from this process: its online-only elements may require internet access and a Capcom ID, while the local-versus concept is built for two people sharing one console or PC. When in doubt, follow the manual for your edition, especially for Switch 2 Joy-Con setup and platform-specific controller menus.
