Usually, yes—but installing updates alone does not guarantee offline play. For a digital game, load its virtual game card onto your Switch 2 while you are online. Nintendo says loaded virtual game cards can be played without an internet connection, provided the game itself does not require one. Games using an Online License check, and titles or features that depend on online services or Nintendo Switch Online membership verification, may still need internet access.
How offline access works for digital games
Nintendo treats digital games and DLC as virtual game cards. When a game’s virtual game card is loaded onto the console, users on that console can play it offline. Nintendo explains this in its Virtual Game Card Guide.
The key is the license method, not whether the game has been updated. An update installs game data; it does not, by itself, change how the console checks your right to launch the game or remove the game’s own internet requirements.
Virtual game card loaded
This is the digital setup suited to offline use. Load the virtual game card before disconnecting. Nintendo says loaded games and DLC can be played without an internet connection, though a particular title may still require online access for gameplay or a feature.

Online License used instead
The Online License setting lets purchased downloads launch without loading their virtual game cards, but it is intended for play while connected. Nintendo says an active internet connection is required for games that are not loaded as virtual game cards when this setting is used. See Nintendo’s instructions for enabling or disabling the Online License setting.
What to expect with each access method

Prepare a digital game before going offline
- While connected to the internet, make sure the game’s virtual game card is loaded on the Switch 2. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide explains this license arrangement.
- Do not rely on Online License for a game that is not loaded as a virtual game card if you expect to play without internet. Nintendo’s Online License instructions say an active connection is required in that situation.
- Start the game while you are still online. This is a practical precaution: it lets you confirm that the loaded license works and see whether the title asks for a connection or membership check.
- Review the specific game’s requirements, especially for online modes, connected features, or Nintendo Switch Online content. Nintendo’s guidance does not establish offline compatibility for every title.
If the game will not start without internet
Nintendo’s support article for the “Unable to connect to the Internet” message when starting software advises checking the connection-related cause and includes inserting a physical game card as another way to start software. A physical card can provide a launch path, but it cannot make an online-only game or feature work offline.

- If the game is a digital purchase, check whether its virtual game card is loaded on this console.
- If you are relying on Online License, reconnect to the internet or load the virtual game card before disconnecting.
- If the license is loaded but the game still asks to connect, check whether the title or the feature you are trying to use has its own online or membership requirement.
