No—there is no identified official native release of the original Grand Theft Auto (1997) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch. The modern collection often mistaken for it, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, contains Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas—not the first, top-down game.
You may still encounter the 1997 title as legacy PC software, an original PlayStation or Game Boy Color release, or a preserved physical copy. None of those formats is a plug-and-play modern-console edition.

Which game is “the first GTA”?
The game in question is the original Grand Theft Auto, released in 1997. It is a top-down action game, not Grand Theft Auto III, which launched the series’ later 3D era. That distinction matters because current console products use the “GTA” name while containing entirely different games.

PlayStation 5
There is no identified native PS5 edition of Grand Theft Auto (1997). Rockstar’s announced modern trilogy is available on PS5 and PS4, but its listed games are GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The original top-down title is absent.
An original PlayStation copy therefore cannot be treated as a PS5 game. The disc was designed for the first PlayStation generation, and the existence of a newer console version of other GTA games does not convert that disc into a supported PS5 release.
Xbox Series X|S
No official Xbox Series X|S release of the 1997 game has been identified. The current trilogy is sold for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, but again includes only GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas.

That means buying the trilogy on Xbox gives you three later 3D games, not the original top-down entry. An old PlayStation disc cannot be used in an Xbox console, and no Xbox backward-compatibility listing for the 1997 title is identified.

Nintendo Switch
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is available on Nintendo Switch, yet the collection’s contents remain limited to GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. There is no identified native Switch release of Grand Theft Auto (1997).
Consequently, seeing “GTA” on the Switch eShop or on a retail listing does not mean the first game is included. Check the individual game list before buying.
PC and the Rockstar Games Launcher
Rockstar Games Customer Support places the original Grand Theft Auto under “PC titles not currently supported via the Rockstar Games Launcher.” The published wording is explicit: “PC titles not currently supported via the Rockstar Games Launcher: … Grand Theft Auto …”

This is a statement about launcher support, not proof that the game never existed for Windows. The 1997 title did receive a Windows release, but current launcher support should not be assumed simply because an old PC copy or installation file exists.

Original PlayStation and Game Boy Color
The PlayStation and Game Boy Color versions are legitimate releases of the first game, but they are legacy editions. To use them as intended, you need the corresponding period hardware or a lawful preservation setup that supports that software. They are not current-generation console ports.
What the modern Definitive Edition actually contains
Rockstar’s announcement and product information list the following three games:
| Game | Included in the Definitive Edition? | Modern platforms listed by Rockstar |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto III | Yes | PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC |
| Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | Yes | PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Yes | PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC |
| Grand Theft Auto (1997) | No | Not stated as a current console release |
The collection’s availability on a modern platform tells you where the collection can run; it does not expand the collection to include earlier games. No edition of the trilogy listed by Rockstar adds the 1997 title as a bonus or unlockable.

- Identify the edition. Confirm whether your item is the 1997 PC release, the original PlayStation version, or the Game Boy Color version. Do not rely on a listing that says only “GTA.”
- Separate ownership from compatibility. A PlayStation disc may be valuable for collecting or preservation, but ownership does not create a PS5 license or a current-generation port.
- Check the platform named on the packaging or store record. MS-DOS and Windows software was not designed as a console download. PlayStation and Game Boy Color software was designed for those older systems.
- Do not substitute the trilogy. If a modern-store page offers The Definitive Edition, verify the three included games. It is not a re-release of the top-down original.
- For an old PC installation, read the support status carefully. Rockstar’s support documentation identifies a former GTA Classics Steam installation path at
C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommongrand theft auto. That documentation concerns Windows installation files and does not promise that the package is currently sold, supported by the Rockstar Games Launcher, or usable on a console. - Plan for legacy-software limitations. If your goal is simply to experience the original, the realistic category is PC or period hardware, not a native PS5, Xbox Series, or Switch install. Preserve the original media and documentation, and use only software and hardware you are legally entitled to use.
Why an old console disc is not automatically backwards compatible
Backward compatibility is a platform-specific feature, not a general consequence of a game being famous or belonging to a long-running series. A current console must have an officially supported way to recognize, license, and run that particular older release. The fact that later GTA games appear on PS5, Xbox Series consoles, or Switch does not establish the same treatment for the first game.
The original PlayStation edition also belongs to a different software and hardware generation from the PS5. Without an identified official compatibility listing, you should treat the disc as legacy media. The same reasoning applies to a Game Boy Color cartridge: it is an original release, not a modern Switch product.

“GTA Trilogy” in a modern store
The word “trilogy” can make the package sound like a historical series collection. Here it refers specifically to three 3D games: GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. It does not include the 1997 game.
A listing that says “classic GTA”
“Classic” may describe an era, a seller’s category, or an older PC bundle. Confirm the exact title and platform. Rockstar’s support article about “Grand Theft Auto (The Original)” discusses the former GTA Classics Steam pack and a Windows folder path; it is not a declaration of console availability.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A PS1 disc advertised as playable on modern PlayStation
Unless the seller identifies an official current-console release, regard that wording as a claim requiring proof. The documented PlayStation version is from the original console generation. It should not be marketed as a native PS5 solution.
Confusing GTA 1 with GTA III
Search results, videos, and storefronts often shorten titles to “GTA.” Check the year and subtitle. “1997,” “top-down,” and “The Original” identify the game discussed here; “GTA III” identifies a separate 3D release.
Is buying the original PlayStation disc worthwhile?
It can make sense as a retro collectible, a preservation item, or part of a period-hardware setup. It does not make sense if your only requirement is to insert a disc into a PS5 and start playing. The purchase decision should therefore be based on collecting or preservation value, not an expectation of modern-console compatibility.
The same qualification applies to old PC copies and the Game Boy Color release. They preserve access to the original game in their respective ecosystems, while the modern trilogy serves a different purpose.
Direct answers to the compatibility questions
- Can I play GTA 1 on PS5? No official native PS5 release of the 1997 game has been identified.
- Is the first Grand Theft Auto backwards compatible on Xbox Series X? No official Series X|S release or compatibility listing for the 1997 title has been identified.
- Is GTA 1997 on Nintendo Switch? No native Switch release has been identified. The Switch trilogy contains three later games.
- Does the Definitive Edition include the original top-down GTA? No. It includes GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas.
- Can I buy the old GTA Classics Steam version and use it on console? Rockstar’s support documentation describes it as Windows software and lists the original game as unsupported by the current Rockstar Games Launcher. That documentation does not establish console use.
The answer in one sentence
If you specifically want Grand Theft Auto from 1997, look to its legacy PC, original PlayStation, or Game Boy Color releases; the officially listed modern-console trilogy is not that game, and no native PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Switch edition is identified.
