The announcement does not establish whether it targets the original PC release, the Remastered release, or both, so identifying the exact base game is the first compatibility check.

That evidence supports “likely possible with Proton,” not “confirmed working.” The distinction matters because a mod can fail even when the unmodified game launches: it may depend on a Windows-only launcher, a particular executable build, injected files, or a separate Proton prefix.

Check which Ghostbusters edition you own
Original PC release
The manual quotation describing Survival comes from the original PC game. If the announcement names that edition, its files and executable may not match the Remastered build. A mod made for one release normally cannot be assumed to work in the other without an explicit port or compatibility note from its author.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered
The Remastered game has a Steam PC release, and the Linux path documented by a Steam Community mod guide is:

Do not mix files between editions
Before copying anything, read the survival mod’s release notes and confirm the listed game title and version. Keep the original and Remastered installations separate. Copying a mod intended for one executable into the other can produce a failed launch, missing assets, or a save that no longer loads. If the announcement does not identify the edition, that omission is a compatibility risk rather than evidence that both editions are supported.
What you need before attempting the install
- A Steam Deck with the intended Ghostbusters PC edition installed and able to launch without modifications.

4. Install exactly what the author requires
Some mods are copied directly into the game directory; others require a manager or a loader. The Remastered texture guide demonstrates a manager-based workflow, but it does not say that the survival mod uses the same tool. Follow the survival mod’s own file list and preserve the archive until the mod has been tested. Do not rename executables or substitute files from another Ghostbusters edition.
5. Return to Gaming Mode and test
- Launch the game from Steam rather than opening its executable manually.
- Check whether the mod adds a menu entry, changes an existing mode, or requires a separate launch option described by its author.
- Start a single-player session and confirm that waves begin, enemies appear, and the game recognizes controller input.
If the game returns to the library immediately, undo the mod using your backup and verify the base game again before trying another configuration.
Forcing Proton when the Windows build will not launch

In Gaming Mode, open the game’s page, select the gear icon, open Properties, choose Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select a Proton version. Try the latest Proton version available on your Deck first, then test another installed version only if the first choice fails.
Lowering graphics settings is also recommended general guidance when a Windows game has launch or performance problems. This does not establish a performance profile for the survival mod; it simply removes graphics load as one possible variable.

A mod that needs a Windows-only launcher or executable may require its own Proton prefix and manual configuration. That is a possibility, not a documented requirement for this survival mod. If the author supplies a launcher, ask whether it is meant to run inside the game’s prefix. Installing it as an unrelated Desktop application can leave the game and launcher using different environments.
How to test whether it is actually usable
A successful launch is not enough. Test the functions that define a playable survival session:
- Mode access: confirm that the survival activity can be selected without a second player or an online connection.
- Wave progression: play through several waves and check that stronger ghosts, knockouts, and the end-of-session condition behave as intended.
- Input: verify movement, aiming, firing, equipment selection, pause, and menu navigation with the Deck controls. No published test confirms the mod’s control mapping.
- Stability: watch for crashes when a wave starts, when the arena changes, or when the player is knocked out.
- Performance: check sustained frame pacing during larger waves, not only the quiet opening seconds. No measured frame-rate result is available for this mod.
- Save behavior: determine whether leaving a session or quitting to Steam damages saves or settings. Keep the backup until this is clear.
If only the modded mode fails while the unmodified game remains stable, the problem is more likely an edition mismatch, missing loader, incompatible file, or Proton-prefix issue than a general Steam Deck limitation.

The game launches, but the survival option is missing
Check that the files were copied to the folder Steam actually opened and that the mod targets your edition. A mod written for the original PC release may not add anything to Remastered, and the reverse is also possible. Re-read the author’s installation notes before adding more files.

The game crashes before the menu
Restore the clean backup, verify that the unmodified game launches, then reinstall only the required mod components. If the author specifies a loader, confirm that it is running in the same Proton environment as the game. Changing Proton versions cannot repair an incorrect file set.
A manager works on Desktop Mode but not from Gaming Mode
The manager may be intended only to install files, not to launch the game. Close it after installation and start the game through Steam. If the manager must remain active, follow its documented launch method; the available guide does not establish one for the survival mod.
Controls or frame pacing feel wrong
First test the unmodified game with the same Proton version and controller layout. Then compare a short survival session with a longer wave. Because no Deck tester has published control or frame-pacing results for this mod, report the specific mode, Proton version, and edition when seeking help rather than assuming every Deck installation behaves identically.
