Yes. A Steam Community player reported that the free Hela demo ran on Steam Deck without problems, staying locked at 35 fps apart from a few brief drops when entering new areas. That is one player’s observation, not a universal benchmark or a guarantee for every Deck, SteamOS release, Proton build, or future demo update.
The demo is a Windows 64-bit build with controller support, so SteamOS runs it through Proton. Start with the normal Steam installation and default compatibility settings; only force a different Steam Play tool if the demo fails to launch or has rendering or input problems.

What the Hela demo is on Steam
The Steam demo is free and distributed as a Windows 64-bit executable named Hela.exe. Its Steam metadata lists full controller support and touchscreen configuration. On a Steam Deck, that Windows executable does not run natively in SteamOS: Steam Play uses Proton to translate the game’s Windows calls for the Linux-based operating system.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
SteamDB metadata detects Unreal Engine components associated with AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. Detection of those libraries does not prove that the demo exposes FSR, DLSS, or a corresponding toggle in its in-game menus. Do not assume that a graphics option exists simply because the executable contains related technology.

Valve’s Deck compatibility program also considers whether Proton and the game’s middleware work correctly. A Windows build can therefore be playable on Deck without having a native Linux version.
How well does the Hela demo run?
The observed result
In a Steam Community discussion, a player wrote that the demo ran without encountering issues. The same report described a frame rate locked at 35 fps, with only a few one-time drops while entering new areas, and called the visual quality decent for a Steam Deck.
This is useful real-world evidence that the demo can be played on Deck, but it is not a reproducible performance test. The report does not identify the Deck model, SteamOS version, Proton build, resolution, refresh rate, power limit, or individual graphics settings. It also does not establish how the game behaves after a later update.
| Question | What the available evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Can the demo launch and play on Deck? | One player reported playing it without issues. | Success on every Deck or every software configuration. |
| What frame rate was seen? | The player reported a 35 fps lock. | A guaranteed target, minimum frame rate, or benchmark average. |
| Are there traversal stutters? | A few brief drops occurred when entering new areas in that report. | How often the drops occur in other areas or on other systems. |
| What graphics preset is best? | No tested preset was documented. | Recommended resolution, TDP, refresh rate, FSR mode, or per-setting values. |
| Is it officially Deck Verified? | No current Verified or Playable badge is established by the cited evidence. | An official rating that may appear in a later update. |
How to interpret the 35 fps observation
A 35 fps lock can provide a consistent-feeling target on a 60 Hz display, but the report does not say whether the player used the game’s limiter, Steam’s frame-rate control, or another setting. It also does not say whether the lock was chosen for battery life, smoothness, or because it was the highest stable result on that particular configuration. Treat 35 fps as a starting expectation from one play session, not as a setting you must reproduce.
The brief area-entry drops sound like one-time traversal or asset-loading events in that session. They should not be described as a confirmed, game-wide stutter pattern: the evidence covers only the player’s run and does not include frame-time captures.

Install and launch the demo on Steam Deck
1. Add the free demo to your library
- Open the Steam Store in Desktop Mode or Gaming Mode.
- Add the free Hela demo to your Steam library.
- Install it to the internal drive or another location with enough free space for the Steam download and its installed files.
No separate physical game, accessory, or utility is required by the available information. The demo is digital software distributed through Steam.
2. Make the first test in Gaming Mode
- Return to Gaming Mode after installation.
- Open the demo from your Library and press Play.
- Leave the compatibility setting at its default for this first launch.
- Use the game’s default graphics settings for the initial test.
Testing the unmodified installation first gives you a useful baseline. If you change several settings before launching, you cannot tell which change affected startup, input, image quality, or frame pacing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Give the first launch time to complete
Judge the result after the game reaches its menu and you have entered gameplay, rather than treating a brief pause during startup as a definitive failure. If the demo reaches gameplay and the controls respond, record that baseline before experimenting with compatibility tools.
Forcing a Steam Play compatibility tool
Most players should begin with Steam’s default compatibility configuration. If the demo will not launch, renders incorrectly, or has unusable input, Valve documents the following override path:
- Open the demo’s Library page.
- Select the gear icon to open Manage options.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility section.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select an installed tool, close Properties, and launch the demo again.
The cited evidence does not prove that a particular Proton release is required. Consequently, there is no evidence-based “best Proton version” to prescribe for everyone. If you try an override, change one tool at a time and re-test so you can identify whether that specific change helped.

When to undo an override
If the default configuration launches and plays correctly, an override adds another variable without an established benefit. Return to the default setting if a forced tool causes a new crash, broken rendering, missing controller input, or worse frame pacing. Keep notes about which configuration worked on your Deck so a later demo update can be tested against the same baseline.
Recommended first-pass performance approach
There is no documented settings profile from the successful player report. The safest approach is therefore a controlled sequence rather than a copied preset.
Start with the game’s defaults
Do not immediately lower resolution, enable an upscaler, cap the refresh rate, or alter power controls. The available report does not document any of those changes, and SteamDB’s detection of FSR or DLSS does not confirm that either option appears in the demo’s menus.
Observe a representative section
Play long enough to enter more than one area. The only reported drops happened when entering new areas, so a menu or opening scene alone cannot tell you whether traversal causes a brief dip. Note whether a drop is a one-time event or repeats whenever you cross the same transition.
Change one variable at a time
If the default result is unsatisfactory, alter a single in-game option, apply it, and repeat the same route. Record the change and its effect on clarity, controls, frame pacing, and battery behavior. Because no controlled benchmark is available, this personal A/B comparison is more informative than assuming a setting used by another Deck will behave identically on yours.

Use the Deck’s performance controls only after the baseline
Steam Deck exposes system-level controls for frame limiting, refresh rate, and power behavior, but the cited Hela evidence does not identify values that were tested. Apply those controls only after you know how the unmodified demo behaves, and keep a note of every change. This prevents a system cap or power limit from being mistaken for a game-engine limitation.
Controller and touchscreen expectations
Steam’s metadata lists full controller support and touchscreen configuration for the demo. That indicates the build declares those input paths to Steam, which is appropriate for Deck use. It does not guarantee that every menu prompt, remapping, or gesture behaves perfectly on every SteamOS and Proton combination.
During your first session, check the actions you actually need: movement, camera control, confirming and backing out of menus, pausing, and any context-sensitive interaction. If gameplay works but a menu does not respond, test the default compatibility configuration before changing controller layouts or forcing Proton; an override can change more than the input layer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Hela demo Steam Deck Verified?
No official Deck rating is established by the cited sources. An earlier developer reply in the same Steam discussion said the team did not yet have Steam Deck compatibility details to share and was still evaluating compatibility. A later player report from October 2026 documented successful play, and the developer acknowledged that report.
Those two facts should be kept separate. The later hands-on result is evidence that the demo worked for one player. It is not the same as a Valve-tested Verified or Playable badge. Valve’s program evaluates compatibility for games that run through Proton, including their middleware. Until an official rating is shown on the current store page or in Steam’s Deck compatibility information, describe the demo as community-tested rather than officially rated.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The demo does not launch
- Confirm that the installation completed and that Steam can start other games.
- Launch once with the default compatibility configuration.
- If it still fails, use Properties > Compatibility and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Test one installed tool, then re-launch. Do not change several tools between tests.
No specific Proton version is proven necessary, so a failed launch on one tool should not be treated as evidence that the demo is unsupported on Deck.
The game launches but the picture is wrong
- Return to the default compatibility configuration if an override was enabled.
- Keep the first graphics test at the game’s defaults.
- Only then adjust one graphics option and repeat the same scene.
The available information does not identify a confirmed renderer fix, resolution, or upscaling mode, so avoid presenting an unverified setting as a universal solution.
Controls or touchscreen input do not respond
- Verify that the Deck is using its standard gamepad layout rather than a custom layout that may have stale bindings.
- Restart the demo after changing the compatibility tool.
- Check both a gameplay segment and the menus; a problem limited to one screen is different from total input failure.
The Steam listing’s controller and touchscreen declarations support trying those inputs, but they are not a guarantee that every Proton combination exposes them identically.

Frame rate drops when entering an area
A few one-time drops during area entry were part of the reported session. First determine whether your drop is brief and non-repeating or whether it continues throughout gameplay. If it is persistent, return to default settings and then make one controlled change at a time; there is no published Hela Deck benchmark that identifies a definitive fix.
What is known—and still unknown—about Deck performance
| Known from the player report | Not supplied by the report |
|---|---|
| The demo was playable without reported issues. | Deck LCD or OLED model. |
| A 35 fps lock was observed. | SteamOS version and Proton build. |
| A few drops occurred on entry to new areas. | Frame-time data, minimum fps, or average fps. |
| Visual quality was considered decent for Deck. | Resolution, preset, upscaling, TDP, refresh rate, and battery draw. |
| The developer acknowledged the later report. | An official Verified or Playable rating. |
These gaps matter when you compare your own experience with the report. A different Deck model, software stack, display configuration, or demo revision can produce a different result without contradicting the earlier observation.
Bottom-line guidance for Deck owners
Install the free Windows demo through Steam, launch it in Gaming Mode with the default compatibility setting, and use the default graphics configuration for your first session. The strongest available hands-on evidence indicates that it is playable and can hold a 35 fps lock for one player, with brief area-entry drops. If startup, rendering, or input fails, use the documented Compatibility menu to test a forced Steam Play tool one change at a time.
Do not promise yourself a universal 35 fps result, a particular Proton release, or a Verified badge: those points are not established by the available evidence. Treat your own controlled test as the authority for your Deck, and retain the working configuration so you can re-check it after future demo updates.
