To watch personal files stored on a drive, use your TV’s separate USB or media-player feature, or a compatible media player. You can upload videos you own to YouTube, but that is a different process from playing them straight from the drive.
What “YouTube streaming service” might mean
If you mean the regular YouTube app, it is an online video service, not a local-file browser. Connecting a drive to the same TV or streaming device does not make its files available inside YouTube. YouTube’s terms say that users may view or listen to content for personal, non-commercial use: YouTube Terms of Service.
YouTube TV is a separate paid service for live television delivered through authorized devices. Its subscriber terms restrict copying, storing, and transferring programming outside its built-in recording features. Do not copy YouTube TV programs to an external drive.
How to play your own videos from an external drive
- Check your device’s manual. Confirm that the exact TV or player supports USB storage, and check its supported file systems, drive capacity and power limits, video codecs, and audio codecs. Manufacturer support varies by model; LG notes that supported extensions and codecs can differ, and Sony cautions that a file may fail even when its format appears on a supported list. See LG support and Sony support.
- Connect the drive and open the device’s media player. Use the TV’s USB input or media-player interface, not YouTube. For example, Sony’s guide describes selecting Apps, then Media Player, then the USB device and file.
- If the TV cannot play the files, check compatible alternatives. Some Roku devices support local files from USB; certain Philips Android TV models support USB playback through an installed media-player app. Verify the exact model’s documentation before buying or connecting another device. See Roku support and Philips product support.
- Use casting only for YouTube content. Casting from a phone or tablet sends YouTube content to a compatible TV or streaming device; it does not turn the YouTube app into a browser for files on your drive.
What to check if a file will not play
- The drive does not appear: Check the device manual for supported filesystems, maximum capacity, and USB power requirements. Try a port or drive configuration the manufacturer supports.
- The drive appears, but the video does not: Check the exact file’s video and audio codecs, not just its filename extension. Support can vary by model, and a listed format is not a guarantee that every file will play.
- You cannot find a USB option in YouTube: That is expected. Exit YouTube and open the TV’s USB input or media-player app.
- You are trying to watch a YouTube video offline: Downloading a copy of a video you uploaded is separate from direct USB playback. YouTube provides a way to download MP4 copies of your own uploaded videos; service terms and third-party rights still apply.
Uploading your own videos to YouTube is a separate option
If the files are your own videos, you can upload them to your YouTube channel, subject to YouTube’s terms and any rights held by others. Once uploaded, they are YouTube content you can access through the service; the app still does not play the original files directly from the external drive.
