To run prerecorded videos in a continuous YouTube livestream and show a still image between them, connect an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Studio, loop a playlist, and arrange for the image to appear at the transitions. OBS documents playlist looping and image display as separate features; its documentation does not describe a built-in setting that automatically inserts a timed still between every playlist item. For unattended transitions, render each video and its still-image interval into a single sequence, or use an automation workflow you have verified with a test stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A computer that can run OBS and stay powered on, plus a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen bitrate.
- VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Video files you own or are authorized to broadcast, and the still image you want to show between videos.
YouTube receives a live audio/video feed from an encoder. In this setup, OBS sends the feed using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to set up an encoder stream, or open Manage → Schedule stream if you want to create a scheduled watch page. Follow YouTube’s prompts to enable live streaming if asked; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Use the values associated with the stream you intend to run.
- Keep the stream key private. It is the credential OBS uses to connect to your broadcast; do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public pages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio before continuing.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream. If that source type is unavailable, install VLC; OBS’s documentation calls for 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. See OBS’s media sources guide.
- Add the local video files in the order you want them played. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the order matters.
- Enable Loop Playlist so OBS returns to the beginning after the last item. Check that every file is accessible from the computer running OBS.
- Play through the list in a test scene. Confirm the order, audio, aspect ratio, and transitions before sending it to YouTube.
Add the still image—and choose how it appears between videos
Set up the image source
- Add an Image source in the same OBS scene and select the still image file. OBS supports common formats including PNG, JPEG/JPG, BMP, TGA, and GIF. See OBS’s image source guide.
- In the Sources list, move the image above the VLC Video source. Higher sources appear over lower ones, so the image will cover the video when visible.
- Resize and position the image to fit the output canvas. Preview it at the actual stream resolution so edges, text, or logos do not get cropped.
Make the transition reliable
OBS documents how to loop a VLC playlist and how to display an image, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a built-in control to show the image for a chosen interval after every playlist item. Simply adding an image source above the video will cover the video whenever that source is visible; it does not by itself schedule the image at playlist transitions.
- Most predictable unattended option: render each video together with the desired still-image interval into one media file, then put the resulting files in the playlist and loop it. Verify the finished sequence before going live.
- Automation option: use a separately verified OBS automation workflow that detects or schedules transitions. Test repeated cycles, including the final item returning to the first, before relying on it unattended.
- Manual option: toggle the image source on between videos. This requires someone to operate OBS and is not an unattended transition method.
These are implementation approaches based on the documented source capabilities; the OBS documentation does not say that OBS cannot be extended with automation.

Choose encoder settings that fit your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends matching stream quality to the available upload connection, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube lists H.264, RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Its bitrate recommendations for H.264 ingestion include:
| Output | Minimum bitrate setting | Recommended bitrate setting |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations for encoder settings, not guarantees of viewer quality. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, with upload headroom for network variation and other traffic, and confirm performance in a test. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming stream for playback on different devices. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Test, then start the continuous broadcast
- Start the OBS stream output and check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative audio and motion. Check stream health, dropped frames, audio levels, playlist order, and whether the still appears at the intended intervals.
- Correct any problems before making the broadcast public. Monitor stream health after launch, especially if the connection or media changes.
- Keep the computer running OBS and its network connection available for the duration of the local stream. If either stops sending the feed, the broadcast cannot continue from that local setup.
Plan for rights, monetization, and the archive
Use media you are allowed to broadcast
Only stream videos and images that you own or are authorized to use in a livestream. Having a copy of a video—or having published it previously—does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright claims and YouTube’s repetitive-content and monetization rules depend on the content and channel; check the applicable YouTube policies for your specific material before running a recurring loop.
Do not rely on one complete YouTube archive
YouTube Help says: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder. All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement covers streams under 12 hours; do not assume a single broadcast running longer than 12 hours will be archived in full as one video. If retaining the broadcast matters, arrange separate capture or segmentation and check YouTube’s current archiving behavior.
