Yes—usually. An Xbox One or Xbox Series X with an optical drive can play many physical games offline after the console has completed its initial setup, the game has finished installing, and any required compatibility package or mandatory update is installed. Keep the disc in the drive: it is the licence check for disc-based play. Internet is still required for some first-time downloads, backward-compatible games, Smart Delivery content, patches, downloadable content and games built around online servers. Xbox Series S consoles without an optical drive cannot read game discs at all.
The short answer, by console
The deciding factors are the console’s hardware, the game’s installation design and whether its playable modes depend on servers.

| Console or disc type | Offline result | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with an optical drive | Usually works | Native Xbox One discs commonly install from the disc. Updates, downloadable content and online features are separate considerations. |
| Xbox Series X | Usually works | The optical drive accepts compatible physical games. Smart Delivery may install a console-specific package, and updates can still be required. |
| Xbox Series S | Cannot use discs | This model has no optical drive. A physical Xbox One, Xbox Series X or older Xbox disc cannot be inserted or licensed. |
| Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc on a supported Xbox One or Series console | Works after preparation, when supported | The disc normally starts a download of the backward-compatible version to the hard drive; the original disc is not necessarily a complete native installation. |
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire policy update in 2013 stated that, after a one-time system setup, an internet connection would not be required to play offline Xbox One games from disc. Current consoles add download-based compatibility layers, Smart Delivery packages and game-specific online requirements, so that policy should be read as the baseline rather than a guarantee for every title.
What “offline” actually means
Offline play has three separate stages that are often confused:
#1 Best Overall
- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
- Console authorization: the Xbox must complete its initial setup and establish the account and system state needed to use games.
- Game installation: the console copies data from the disc or downloads a required compatible package. A disc can be present while the installation is incomplete.
- Game operation: the title must offer a mode that does not contact a server. A local campaign may work while matchmaking, cloud saves or a server-authenticated menu does not.
Once those stages are complete, the disc remains the physical licence token. If you remove it, the installed files can remain on the drive but the console may refuse to launch the disc licence. Installing a disc does not turn it into a disc-free digital purchase.
What to do before disconnecting the Xbox
1. Finish the one-time console setup online
Start with the Xbox connected to the internet. Complete system setup, sign in to the account that will use the console and install any system update the setup process requires. This is the safest time to let the console establish its licence and compatibility services; trying to perform first-time setup during an outage can leave you unable to reach the dashboard or install a required package.
2. Install the game from its disc
Insert the disc and follow the installation prompt. Keep the console online during this first pass even when you expect the disc to contain the whole game. The installation may need a title update, a Smart Delivery package for the specific Xbox generation or a backward-compatible download. Wait for the queue to report completion rather than launching as soon as a small playable portion appears.

3. Apply updates and required content
Check the game’s update status while connected. A patch is not automatically optional: some publishers make a particular update necessary for launch, save compatibility or local modes. Download any DLC you have purchased and intend to use; the base disc cannot provide content that exists only on a server or in a separate download.
4. Test the exact offline mode
Before travelling or relying on an outage setup, pause the network connection and launch the game with the disc inserted. Enter the campaign, arcade, split-screen or other local mode you plan to use. Do not stop at the title screen: some games allow the menu to open but require a server when a profile, match or mission is selected. Restore the connection afterward if you still need cloud saves or multiplayer.
How installation differs by game type
| Game situation | Installation path | Offline limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Xbox One disc | Most data is copied from the disc to internal storage; an update may follow. | Playable local content can work offline after installation, but online services and mandatory patches cannot. |
| Xbox Series X disc with Smart Delivery | The console may select a Series-optimised package rather than using only the files on the disc. | Complete the selected package and any required update before disconnecting. A later-generation package is not guaranteed to be fully on the disc. |
| Supported Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc | Inserting the disc triggers a download of the compatible version to the hard drive. | Internet is normally needed for that first download. Keep the original disc inserted afterward to prove ownership. |
| Online-only or server-dependent title | The disc may install normally. | Installation does not create an offline mode. Authentication, persistent-world simulation or server-side progression can still block play. |
| Game with substantial DLC | The disc installs its included build; expansions and packs are separate downloads. | Only installed content is available offline, and some games require all entitlement checks to complete while online. |
Backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs
Backward compatibility is the most common surprise. On a supported title, the older disc acts as proof that you own the game, while the Xbox One or Series console downloads an adapted version. The disc itself may contain data the newer console cannot run directly. As a result, “I have the disc” does not mean “I can install without internet.”

- Standard Edition for Xbox Series X (disc) includes the full EA Sports UFC 6 game. Not compatible with Xbox One.
- Powered by fighters: advanced striking and motion systems bring UFC stars to life with more realistic movement, impact, and responsiveness in every exchange.
- Step into the Octagon: refined gameplay delivers tighter controls, fluid animations, and authentic MMA action.
- Fight your story: new immersive modes add narrative depth, making every bout feel personal and driven by your choices.
Use the official backward-compatible game list to confirm support before disconnecting. Insert the disc while online, allow the compatible download to finish, install any update the title requests and then test its campaign or local multiplayer offline. If the game is not on the supported list, the newer console cannot use the disc merely because the original Xbox or Xbox 360 could.

Smart Delivery and Series X discs
Smart Delivery can provide the version built for the console in use. Microsoft’s publishing guidance documents offline use of Smart Delivery disc content, while also noting that updates can remain available or required. In practical terms, a Series X may read a disc, identify the entitlement and install a package suited to the hardware. The disc still needs to be present when you launch.
Do not assume that a disc labelled for Xbox One contains every Series X file. If the console presents a download, finish it before going offline. If storage is tight, leave enough free space for the installed package and its update; an interrupted queue can leave an apparently installed game that will not start without reconnecting.

When an internet connection is still required
- Initial setup: the first console setup and any setup-mandated system update require a connection.
- Compatibility downloads: supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs download their playable package.
- Smart Delivery or incomplete disc builds: the required console-specific files may not all be present on the physical media.
- Mandatory patches: a title can refuse to proceed until a particular update is installed.
- Online-only games: persistent worlds, server-authoritative games and titles with compulsory online authentication cannot be made offline by inserting a disc.
- Online features: matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud-based progression, live events, voice services and many social features stop when the console is disconnected.
- Uninstalled DLC: expansions, texture packs and other downloads are unavailable until they have been installed and licensed.
- Account or licence recovery: changing accounts, restoring a console or resolving a licence error may require Microsoft’s services even if the game normally supports offline play.
Offline preparation checklist
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and complete console setup.
- Install the disc game fully; do not rely on a partial “ready to start” state.
- Allow compatibility packages, Smart Delivery files and mandatory updates to finish.
- Install any DLC, language pack or content you expect to use without a connection.
- Leave the disc inserted or store it where it will be available; it is required for launch.
- Disconnect the network temporarily and test the precise local mode you need.
- Keep enough free storage for updates or reinstallation if the console’s drive is replaced or cleared.
Troubleshooting common offline failures
The console says the game needs an update
Reconnect, let the update complete and retry while offline. If the title is online-only, no patch will create a local mode; you will need a connection whenever the game starts.
The disc is not recognised
Clean the disc, check that it is the correct region and format, and try another known-good disc. If the Xbox model has no optical drive, there is no software fix. A Series S, for example, cannot read a disc at all.

A backward-compatible disc starts a download
This is expected for supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Stay online until the compatible version is installed, then launch it with the original disc inserted and test offline.

The game installed but will not launch without Wi-Fi
Reconnect and look for an incomplete download, a required update, missing DLC or an account/licence prompt. Then test a single-player or local mode. If every mode contacts a server, the game is not offline-capable even though its files came from a disc.
Local multiplayer works but saves or profiles do not
Cloud synchronisation and some profile services need a connection. Use the console’s local save and guest options while offline, then reconnect later to synchronise where the game supports it.
Bottom line
A physical Xbox game is not automatically an offline game, but a disc-equipped Xbox One or Xbox Series X can play many disc titles without Wi-Fi once setup, installation and required downloads are complete. The reliable test is practical: install while online, keep the disc inserted, disconnect the network and enter the exact local mode you plan to use. Backward-compatible discs, Smart Delivery packages, mandatory updates and server-dependent games are the exceptions that most often require internet access.
