Usually, no. An Xbox console purchase does not create a PS5 version, and Xbox Play Anywhere works across Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and supported handhelds—not PlayStation 5. You can play an Xbox-associated game on PS5 only when its publisher has released a separate PS5 edition. Cloud streaming is another route on supported browsers, TVs, phones, PCs and headsets, but Microsoft’s cited Xbox Cloud Gaming documentation does not list PS5 as a client.
The practical choice is straightforward: use Xbox Series X|S for native Xbox games, buy the PS5 edition of a specific title when one exists, or stream through a device and service that explicitly supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What “playing an Xbox game on PS5” can mean
People use the phrase for three different situations, and they do not have the same answer:
- Running an Xbox console version on PS5: this is not supported. PS5 cannot install or execute an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One game package.
- Playing the same game after a PS5 release: possible when the publisher sells or provides a distinct PlayStation 5 version.
- Streaming an Xbox game to another device: possible through Xbox Cloud Gaming on the devices Microsoft lists, subject to service, region, network and title availability.
Those distinctions also determine your license, save data, controller options, latency and subscription needs. Owning a digital or disc copy for Xbox does not automatically grant a PlayStation entitlement.

Does Xbox Play Anywhere work on PS5?
No. Xbox Play Anywhere is an Xbox ecosystem entitlement. Microsoft describes it as a single purchase that can provide the console and Windows PC versions, with supported handheld access, shared progression and achievements at no additional cost. The current program page says more than 1,000 titles are enabled and that more than half of players use multiple devices.
The supported devices in that entitlement are Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and Microsoft-supported handheld access. PlayStation 5 is not included, so an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase cannot be redeemed as a PS5 copy. If you bought a Play Anywhere game on Xbox, you can continue it on an eligible PC or supported handheld, but you must obtain a PS5 release separately if you want to play on Sony’s console.
Microsoft’s 2025 Xbox Games Showcase described the model this way: “With a single purchase, they can play with Xbox, including their progress and achievements, across Xbox console, PC and Xbox Ally—at no additional cost.” That statement does not extend the entitlement to competing consoles.

Availability depends on the individual game, release date and region. Check the game’s current PlayStation Store listing and the publisher’s support page before buying or promising PS5 compatibility. A listing for Xbox, PC or cloud does not prove that a PS5 edition exists.
Microsoft confirmed in February 2024 that four formerly exclusive Xbox games would come to rival consoles. The Associated Press reported that announcement and quoted Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer saying, “The teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away.” At that time, AP reported that Starfield and Indiana Jones were not among those four. That was a dated announcement, not a permanent catalog rule; later releases and regional storefronts can change what is available.
How the main routes compare
| Route | What you actually run | License and saves | Input and service requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Native Xbox console versions | Xbox ownership; Play Anywhere titles can synchronize with eligible PC and handheld versions | Xbox controller and the console; no streaming latency for local play |

Can Xbox Cloud Gaming run on a PS5?
Microsoft’s GDC 2025 documentation says Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream through virtually any device with a web browser, including iOS, Android, Chromebooks and non-gaming PCs. It also names Samsung TVs, Fire TV devices and Meta Quest headsets. The same documentation says, “Game progress, purchases, and add-ons synchronize seamlessly across console, PC, and cloud.”

That means you should treat Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5 as unsupported unless Microsoft explicitly adds a PS5 app or supported browser route. A PS5’s web browser capabilities, by themselves, are not a promise that the Xbox streaming service will work, accept sign-in, deliver controls or remain supported.

Do not confuse controller compatibility with console compatibility. Microsoft says Xbox Cloud Gaming supports Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro Bluetooth controllers. You may therefore use a DualSense with Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported phone, PC, TV or headset; that does not make the PS5 itself an approved Xbox Cloud Gaming device.
Microsoft reported more than 140 million hours streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming between October and December 2024. That figure demonstrates usage of the service across its supported endpoints, not availability on every console.
What can a PS5 stream natively?
PS5’s own streaming feature is PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming for selected games from the PlayStation library. Sony also offers Remote Play for PlayStation devices. Both are PlayStation services: neither imports your Xbox library, recognizes an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement or turns an Xbox purchase into a PS5 game.

How saves, purchases and cross-progression work
Xbox console, PC and cloud
For Xbox Play Anywhere titles, Microsoft’s model is one Xbox entitlement across eligible Xbox, PC and supported handheld versions. Xbox Cloud Gaming documentation separately promises synchronization of game progress, purchases and add-ons across console, PC and cloud. You still need to sign in with the account that owns the game or has the applicable access.
PS5 ports
A PS5 port has its own PlayStation entitlement. Some games implement cross-progression or cross-save with Xbox, PC or other platforms; others keep saves separate. The showcase listing for Gears of War: Reloaded specifically included cross-play and cross-progression, but that feature should not be assumed for every port. Read the individual game’s account-linking and save-transfer documentation.
Physical copies
An Xbox disc is formatted for Xbox hardware and cannot be inserted into a PS5 to install the game. A PS5 disc or digital listing is required for the PlayStation version, unless the publisher offers a clearly documented entitlement program for that specific title.

What you need for each option
For native Xbox play
- Use an Xbox Series X|S console and the Xbox account that owns the game or has access through the applicable subscription.
- Install the Xbox version locally, or use the console’s supported cloud features when offered.
- For a Play Anywhere title, sign in to the same Microsoft account on an eligible Windows PC or supported handheld to access the linked version and synchronized progression.
For a PS5 version
- Search the current PlayStation Store listing for the exact game and edition.
- Confirm the listing says PS5, not only PS4, Xbox, PC or cloud.
- Check whether cross-play, cross-progression, account linking and save transfer are explicitly documented.
- Buy or redeem the PS5 edition through its PlayStation entitlement; an Xbox purchase alone is not sufficient.
For cloud streaming away from Xbox
- Choose a device Microsoft explicitly lists for Xbox Cloud Gaming, such as a supported browser device, Samsung TV, Fire TV device or Meta Quest headset.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the required service access.
- Pair a supported controller. Microsoft lists Xbox, DualSense, DualShock and Nintendo Switch Pro Bluetooth controllers.
- Check that the title is in the service catalog for your region and account tier.
- Use a stable, low-latency connection; streaming sends video to the screen and your controller input back to the server, so network conditions affect responsiveness.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “Xbox exclusive” means one permanent platform policy
Publisher strategy changes. A game once marketed as an Xbox exclusive may later receive a PS5 edition, while another may remain limited to Xbox, PC or cloud. Use the current store listing for the exact title and region rather than relying on an old exclusivity label.

Buying the wrong edition
Store pages can show multiple platforms, generations and editions. Verify the PS5 logo or platform designation before checkout. Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and cloud listings are not PS5 licenses.
Expecting a PS5 browser to substitute for an approved client
Microsoft’s published Cloud Gaming device list does not identify PS5. A workaround found online may be blocked, unsupported or removed, and it may not provide reliable controls or updates. Use a listed endpoint instead.
Expecting every save to follow you
Cross-progression is a title-level feature. Xbox’s synchronization promises apply to the Xbox, PC and cloud ecosystem described by Microsoft; a separately released PS5 port may use a different entitlement and save system. Confirm the game’s own policy before switching platforms.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring region and release timing
Catalogs, launch dates, cloud availability and subscription benefits vary by country and can change. A game announced for PS5 may not yet be released in your market, and a cloud title can leave a service catalog. Recheck the official listing when you are ready to play.
Decision guide: which platform should you choose?
- You want the broadest access to Xbox console versions: choose Xbox Series X|S. It is the direct native route and avoids the extra entitlement issue created by a PS5 port.
- You already own a PS5 and want one named game: first verify that a PS5 edition exists, then buy that edition and confirm its cross-progression policy.
- You want to use an Xbox library without buying an Xbox console: use an eligible Windows PC or supported handheld for Play Anywhere games, or a listed Xbox Cloud Gaming device where the title is available.
- You mainly want streamed games on PS5: PS5’s native option is PlayStation Plus Premium for selected PlayStation titles, not Xbox purchases. Select a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming endpoint instead for Xbox streaming.
The dividing line is entitlement: Xbox ownership travels within Microsoft’s supported ecosystem, while a PS5 release is a separate product. Streaming can move the game session to many kinds of hardware, but only where Microsoft explicitly supports the client.
