Yes. Xbox Series X|S plays most Xbox One games through backward compatibility. Digital purchases appear in your account’s Ready to Install list; supported Xbox One discs work on Xbox Series X after the console installs the game, but the disc must stay in the drive. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it can run only digital games. Compatibility, downloads and performance enhancements vary by title.

What works on each console

Xbox describes the library as “Most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S.” That is a broad statement, not a promise that every Xbox One release works. The official Backward Compatible Games catalog identifies supported and excluded titles, and individual games can differ in required downloads, features and enhancements.

How digital Xbox One games transfer

Digital ownership is tied to the Microsoft account that bought the game (or otherwise holds its license), not to the old console. Sign in to that same account on the Series X or Series S. Compatible purchases are listed under Ready to Install, as described in Xbox’s compatibility FAQ.

  1. Connect the Series console to the internet and complete its system setup.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox One game.
  3. Open My games & apps, then look in Ready to Install for the compatible title.
  4. Select the game and choose Install. The console downloads the required files; the size and any additional content depend on that game.
  5. Start the game after installation. If it does not appear, verify the account and check the official compatibility catalog before assuming the license is missing.

The free backward-compatibility feature does not remove the ownership requirement. A title must be in the supported catalog and your account must have a valid license. Online multiplayer can also require a separate Xbox subscription, depending on the game and the service rules that apply to it.

How Xbox One discs work on Series X

Xbox Series X is the model to choose if your Xbox One library is on discs. Insert a supported Xbox One disc into the Series X. The console uses the disc to identify the game, then downloads and installs the playable version to internal storage. Xbox’s compatibility FAQ states that the disc must remain in the drive after installation because it serves as the play license.

  1. Turn on the Series X and connect it to the internet.
  2. Insert the supported Xbox One disc.
  3. Accept the installation prompt and wait for the required download and updates.
  4. Leave the disc inserted whenever you launch and play the game.

The disc is not a way to bypass compatibility. If the title is excluded from the catalog, inserting its disc will not make it playable. A disc also cannot be used directly on Series S: that console is digital-only and has no optical drive.

Moving games from an external drive

Xbox says games already installed on an external drive can be brought to either Series console. This can save a substantial download when moving a large library from an Xbox One. Connect the drive to the new console and let the system scan it; compatible installations can then be launched or moved to internal storage according to the game’s requirements.

  • Keep the drive connected while you test the transferred library.
  • Check every title against the compatibility catalog; an existing installation does not make an excluded game playable.
  • Move a game to internal storage if the console or that title requires it for operation or an enhancement.
  • Plan for updates even when the base game is already on the drive.

An Xbox-compatible external USB storage drive is useful for transporting large installations, but it does not change a game’s compatibility status or transfer ownership between accounts.

What backward compatibility does—and does not—guarantee

Most, not all, Xbox One games

The catalog is selective. Xbox maintains an excluded-games list, so the correct test is the individual title rather than the Xbox One label on its box or store listing. A game may also require a specific download or have features that differ from the Xbox One version.

Free compatibility, paid ownership

Xbox does not charge a separate backward-compatibility fee. You still need to own the digital license or possess the supported disc. If the game’s multiplayer mode has a subscription requirement, backward compatibility does not waive it.

Enhancements are title-specific

Some compatible games can run with a higher resolution, faster frame rate, improved textures or Auto HDR on Series X|S. These are not universal guarantees. The game determines which improvements are available, and a compatible title may receive none of them. Do not infer a particular frame rate or resolution unless the game’s own listing or update information confirms it.

Downloads are normal

Even a disc owner should expect an installation download. The disc provides the license check, while the console installs the playable files on its storage. Digital owners likewise need enough free space and an internet connection for the initial download and updates.

Series X or Series S for an Xbox One library?

Decision point Series X Series S
Your library is mostly physical discs Fits the library: supported discs can be installed and must be kept in the drive Does not fit: there is no disc drive
Your library is entirely digital Works with supported digital purchases Works with supported digital purchases
Moving an existing external-drive library Supported for compatible titles Supported for compatible titles
Need to preserve disc-based ownership Yes, this is the relevant choice No disc-based access
Expected visual or performance changes Depends on each game; possible resolution, frame-rate, texture and Auto HDR improvements

The practical dividing line is the format of your library. A digital Xbox One collection can move to either console when its games are supported. A collection on discs requires Series X; Series S cannot read or validate those discs.

Why a game may not appear or start

The title is not in the compatibility catalog

Search the official Xbox Backward Compatible Games catalog for the exact game. Similar names, regional editions and bundles can have different support. If Xbox lists the title as excluded, there is no console setting that enables it.

The wrong account is signed in

Digital purchases appear only for the account that owns them, or through the console’s authorized sharing arrangement. Sign out and check the Microsoft account used on the original purchase before reinstalling anything.

A disc is missing or unreadable

Series X needs the supported disc in the drive each time you play. Clean the disc, check that it is an Xbox One disc rather than an unsupported release, and try the installation again. A completed installation without the disc will still fail the license check.

The installation is incomplete

Check the download queue and available internal storage. A transferred game can still need updates or additional files. Do not delete the external installation until the Series console has recognized and launched the title successfully.

Multiplayer is unavailable

Backward compatibility covers the game’s console support, not every online-service condition. Confirm that the game’s servers remain available and that your account has any subscription required for online multiplayer.

What changed in 2026: disc-based digital entitlements

On August 26, 2026, Xbox announced an Insider test for supported disc-based games. In the program, inserting a disc can allow an eligible player to claim a digital entitlement, reducing the need to use the disc as the ongoing license check after the entitlement is granted.

This is a limited, changing test—not a blanket conversion of every Xbox One disc. Xbox said testing begins with Insiders, starts with thousands of titles and does not include every title at launch. Availability can change while the program is evaluated, so owning a disc does not by itself guarantee eligibility. Until a particular game is confirmed in the program, use the normal Series X rule: install from the supported disc and keep that disc in the drive.

Xbox’s compatibility work

In an Xbox Wire explanation published October 13, 2020, the backward-compatibility team said Xbox Series X|S preparation involved “more than 500,000 hours of gameplay testing.” That effort helps explain why many Xbox One titles run on the newer consoles, but it does not turn the catalog into a complete copy of every Xbox One release. The title-level listing remains the authority for support and features.

A practical checklist before you upgrade

  • List the Xbox One games you actually play and identify whether each is digital, disc-based or installed on an external drive.
  • Check each title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog, including the edition you own.
  • Choose Series X if any essential games are physical discs; choose Series S only if you are comfortable with an entirely digital library.
  • Use the same Microsoft account on the new console for digital purchases.
  • Reserve internal storage for downloads, updates and games that need to be moved from an external drive.
  • Expect game-specific behavior rather than a universal enhancement: resolution, frame rate, textures and Auto HDR vary by title.
  • Keep supported discs available for Series X play unless an eligible 2026 Insider entitlement has actually been granted.
