The Epic Games Store giveaway people remember ended in 2020. Later free upgrades were for people who already owned the game, while account-linking rewards provide GTA Online content—not the base game. Promotions can be limited, so check the official store for your platform and region.
What “free GTA 5” can mean
Several different offers are easy to confuse. A full-game giveaway gives a new player a game entitlement; an upgrade changes an eligible owner’s existing version; and a GTA Online reward adds in-game content to an account. Only the first means you can start playing without already owning GTA V.

- Free full game: a limited-time offer that grants the base game to eligible claimants.
- Free upgrade: a newer platform or edition for someone who already owns a qualifying version.
- GTA Online reward: in-game currency or items, not a copy of GTA V.
Was GTA 5 really free on Epic Games?
Yes. Rockstar announced on May 14, 2020 that GTA V: Premium Edition would be free on the Epic Games Store through 11 a.m. ET on May 21, 2020. The announcement said people who claimed it could keep the game. That was a genuine but expired giveaway, not evidence of a current free offer. Rockstar’s 2020 announcement
Are the free upgrades a free copy for new players?
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar’s support article, updated June 18, 2026, describes free upgrades for owners of the corresponding PS4 or Xbox One version. This route requires prior ownership; it does not give a new player the older game for free. PS4 disc owners must keep the disc in the console to verify ownership. Xbox physical-disc owners cannot upgrade to a digital version because of platform limitations. Rockstar’s console upgrade instructions

PC Enhanced
Rockstar announced on February 27, 2025 that GTAV Enhanced would be available free on March 4, 2025 to people who already owned GTAV on PC. Eligible owners could access the upgrade in their Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam library. This is an owner upgrade, not a free entitlement for someone who does not own the PC game. Do account-linking rewards include GTA 5?
No. Rockstar’s account-linking FAQ describes rewards such as GTA Online currency and in-game items for eligible linked accounts. Those rewards are content for use in the game, not a free copy of the base game. Rockstar’s account-linking FAQ

Can Rockstar send you a free offer?
Rockstar says special offers may be available to certain Rockstar Games members or mailing-list subscribers, and may be restricted by platform. Its support page states, “You must receive a promotion or offer to be able to redeem it.” Rockstar does not guarantee that offers will be available to everyone or offered at any particular frequency. Check your own eligibility and the offer terms rather than assuming a promotion applies to all players. Rockstar’s special-offers guidance
