Sometimes—but only if an earlier copy still exists. Check the platform’s cloud history, the game’s local save folders, a game-specific backup slot, an operating-system backup, or a separate USB/SSD copy. If the save was deleted or overwritten everywhere, support guidance treats it as unrecoverable. Permadeath creates a second question: even a technically successful restore may conflict with the game’s intended challenge, achievements, or community rules.
What to do immediately after a permadeath save disappears
Your first actions can determine whether any recoverable copy survives. Do not launch the game again, load a new run, or continue from a replacement save. A new save can occupy the same slot, and cloud synchronization can copy that new state over the older one. Insomniac Games’ support guidance is unusually direct: “If you noticed your save file is missing after booting up the game, do NOT continue playing.”

- Stop launching and playing. Close the game and, where practical, pause the platform’s automatic cloud synchronization before opening the title again.
- Preserve the current local data. Copy the entire game-save directory to a different folder or external drive. Do not move or rename the only copy; make a duplicate first.
- Record the last known good session. Note the date and approximate time of your last successful play. You will use that information when comparing local and cloud timestamps.
- Inspect the platform cloud state without accepting a conflict blindly. If the platform reports that local and cloud files differ, compare the dates with your last play session before choosing either version.
- Look for an in-game recovery or backup slot. Some games keep a separate backup save even when the main slot is missing.
Do not “test” the game by starting another run before making a copy. On systems that synchronize automatically, merely starting the game can be enough to propagate an empty, new, or corrupted state.
How likely is recovery?
Recovery is possible when at least one earlier copy remains intact. The age of that copy matters less than whether it predates the deletion and has not been overwritten. A cloud service that contains only the current synchronized file is not automatically a historical archive. If the deletion or corruption was synchronized, the cloud copy may now contain the same unusable state as the local drive.

| Possible source | What must be true | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Platform cloud save | An older cloud version still exists or a conflict presents the older file. | Synchronization may have replaced the older state with the deletion or corruption. |
| Local save folder | The computer or console still has an untouched copy. | Launching the game can overwrite it with a new save. |
| Game-specific backup slot | The game created a separate recovery file before the main slot disappeared. | Backup behavior is title-specific and may not exist. |
| Operating-system backup | A file-history, restore-point, or full-system backup predates the loss. | A backup that ran after the deletion may preserve only the deleted state. |
| External copy | You manually copied the save or a restorable game backup elsewhere. | The copy may be old, incomplete, or stored in a format that requires manual replacement. |
There is no authoritative percentage for success. Support documentation describes conditions and limitations rather than a recovery rate, so any universal “recovery chance” figure would be misleading.
Steam: check cloud conflicts and local userdata
Steam Cloud can store save games, but Valve warns that lost saves are unlikely to be recoverable. Steam Support can explain how the Cloud system works, yet it cannot restore lost saves or resolve a cloud conflict for you. Your best opportunity is an unresolved conflict, an older computer that has not synchronized, or a local file that was never overwritten.
Compare a Steam Cloud conflict safely
- Close the game without creating a new save.
- When Steam reports that local and cloud files differ, inspect the displayed timestamps and file dates.
- Match those dates against your last successful permadeath session.
- Choose the copy that demonstrably predates the deletion and contains your progress. Do not choose solely because it is labeled “cloud” or “local.”
- After synchronization completes, launch the game once and verify the save from the load menu. If the run is present, create a new manual save only if the game supports that operation without compromising the restored state.
If Steam presents no conflict, it may already have synchronized one state to both locations. That does not prove that every older version is gone, but it means you should investigate local folders and other computers before repeatedly launching the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFind Steam’s cached save files
Valve documents these Steam userdata locations:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Inside the userdata directory, games are organized by Steam application and user identifiers. Do not delete or edit files in place while investigating. Copy the complete relevant folder to separate storage, then inspect modification dates and any files that appear to be backups or alternate versions. The exact filenames and subfolders are chosen by the game, not by a universal Steam naming standard.
Check an older computer before it synchronizes
An older PC can retain a newer or older local save that never reached the cloud. Disconnecting it from the network before opening Steam can prevent an unwanted synchronization, but Steam’s normal cloud behavior and the game’s own launcher can vary. Preserve the entire userdata folder first. If the older machine contains the desired progress, use the platform’s conflict screen and timestamps to decide which copy should become authoritative rather than allowing an automatic choice to overwrite it.

Steam backup files: useful, but not guaranteed to include saves
Steam’s Backup feature creates restorable game backups, but save-file inclusion varies. Valve notes that third-party save locations are determined by the developer. Restoring the game itself therefore may not restore a save stored outside Steam’s installation directory; you may need to copy that save back manually from the backup media.
- Create or locate the Steam game backup on the storage where you saved it.
- Restore the game using Steam’s backup and restore workflow.
- Before launching, identify whether the game’s save directory was included. Developer-controlled locations may be separate from the game files.
- Copy any separately backed-up save folder into the game’s documented save location, keeping the original restored files as a safety copy.
- Test the backup media after creating a backup. Valve specifically recommends verifying that a backup can be read and restored rather than assuming that a completed copy is usable.
A Steam game backup is not proof that your permadeath progress is protected. Treat the executable and the save data as two related but potentially separate items.

For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Activision’s support guidance says that deleting saved-game data is permanent and cannot be undone through the console. Recovery therefore requires a prior online backup or a USB backup made before deletion. Current menus, subscription retention rules, and available cloud options vary by console generation, so use the game and platform’s current support page for the exact navigation on your hardware.
If a prior online backup exists
Do not start the game until you have checked the platform’s saved-data management screen. Look for a cloud copy dated before the loss and compare it with your last successful run. Restore only after confirming the date; a cloud copy created after the deletion may simply preserve the empty or replacement slot.
If you made a USB backup
Connect the same storage device and use the console’s saved-data restore function. Keep the current console data untouched until you know which version the USB contains. A USB backup made before the deletion can restore the run; a backup made afterward cannot reconstruct changes that were never captured.

If no backup exists
Console deletion guidance does not provide a reversal mechanism. Reinstalling the game, rebuilding the database, or contacting support cannot recreate a save that has no remaining copy. Avoid unofficial tools that claim to recover every console save; they cannot manufacture data that was overwritten or securely erased.

Some games maintain their own recovery file independently of platform cloud storage. This is not a standard feature, so look in the game’s support documentation, release notes, or load menu rather than assuming that every permadeath title has one.
Insomniac’s backup-save procedure
Insomniac documents a pattern in which a backup can appear only after a controlled start:
- Start a new game.
- Quit during the first cutscene.
- Open the Load Game menu and check whether a backup save is listed.
- If the backup appears, load it.
- Create a manual save immediately so the recovered state is no longer dependent on the temporary backup entry.
This procedure applies to the games and versions covered by Insomniac’s support article. Starting a new game is normally risky because it can overwrite existing data, so first copy the local save directory and follow the title’s own instructions exactly.
Separate backup folders, as used by some PC games
A Dead Cells announcement describes a separate backup folder and a restoration process that temporarily disables Steam Cloud before restoring an archive. The important principle is to stop synchronization while replacing the local file, restore the archive, verify the run, and then re-enable cloud synchronization only after the desired state is safely established. This is an example, not a universal Dead Cells or PC-game procedure; folder names, archive formats, and menu labels differ by title.

Why cloud synchronization can make recovery impossible
Cloud synchronization is designed to keep devices consistent, not to provide unlimited version history. Suppose the last good permadeath save exists on both your PC and the cloud. You delete it on the PC, launch the game, and allow the empty state to synchronize. The cloud can then become a copy of the deletion. If the game uploads a corrupted file, the same problem can occur without any deliberate deletion.
Capcom’s guidance for Monster Hunter: World illustrates the hard limit: save data is stored on Xbox Live Cloud and the local hard drive, but a save that was manually overwritten or deleted—or corrupted and uploaded to the cloud—cannot be recovered. The practical lesson applies broadly: a cloud copy is useful only while it still contains an earlier, valid state.
Will restoring the file break permadeath?
That depends on what “break” means in the specific game. Technically, restoring a previous file may let you continue the run. Rules-wise, it may undo the consequence that permadeath is intended to enforce. Some games may flag achievements based on save history, while community challenges may prohibit restoring any earlier state. The available support guidance establishes recovery mechanics, not a universal policy for every title.
- Check the game’s terms, achievement descriptions, and official support notes.
- Check the rules of any leaderboard, challenge, tournament, or community run you are participating in.
- Keep the original deleted or corrupted state preserved separately so you can document what happened.
- If the game has an explicit ironman or permadeath integrity check, assume that a restored file may invalidate it unless the developer says otherwise.
For a private offline run, the decision is yours. For a shared challenge or achievement hunt, disclose the restoration and follow that activity’s rules rather than treating a technically valid file as automatically legitimate.

Recovery options compared
| Option | Best indication it may work | What can prevent recovery | Permadeath concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud conflict selection | The platform shows local and cloud files with different dates, including one from before the loss. | The deletion or corruption already synchronized to both sides. | Restoring an earlier state may undo a death or invalidate a challenge. |
| Steam userdata copy | An older computer or untouched local folder contains a pre-loss file. | The folder was overwritten when the game was relaunched. | The recovered timestamp may not match the run’s intended final state. |
| Game backup slot | The title’s Load Game menu exposes a separate backup entry. | The game never created a backup or the backup was replaced. | The game may treat the backup as a rollback. |
| Operating-system backup | A file-history or system backup predates the deletion. | No backup was enabled, or it captured the deleted state. | Restoring files does not guarantee achievement or rule compliance. |
| USB or external copy | A manually copied save or archive exists on separate storage. | The copy was made after the loss or cannot be read. | Using it can still constitute a rollback under challenge rules. |
Common failure modes and safer fixes
Launching repeatedly to see whether the save returns
Why it fails: each launch can create or synchronize a replacement file.
Safer fix: stop playing, duplicate the local folder, then investigate copies offline or through the platform’s conflict interface.

Choosing “cloud” automatically in a conflict
Why it fails: the cloud may contain the deletion or a corrupted upload.
Safer fix: compare timestamps with your last successful session and choose by evidence, not by location.
Assuming a game backup includes the save
Why it fails: developers decide where third-party save data is stored, and Steam’s game backup may omit it.
Safer fix: restore the game, then separately restore the documented save folder and keep the original files until verification.
Starting a new run before checking for a backup
Why it fails: a new run can overwrite the very backup or slot you hoped to inspect.
Safer fix: copy the save directory first and follow the game’s documented backup-menu procedure.
Expecting support to reconstruct an overwritten file
Why it fails: Valve says Steam Support cannot recover lost saves, and console guidance treats deleted saves as permanent without a prior backup.
Safer fix: search every surviving copy, including older computers and external media, before concluding that the data is gone.
How to prevent the next permadeath-save loss
- Keep one separate copy. Copy the save folder or a restorable game backup to an external USB hard drive or SSD before major updates, migrations, mod experiments, or platform changes.
- Use more than one location. A local copy and a physically separate copy protect against different failures. Do not rely on a single synchronized folder.
- Label copies by date. Include the game, platform, profile, and date in the folder name so you can identify the last known good state without opening the game.
- Test the backup. Valve recommends testing backup media after creation. Confirm that the drive can be read and that the archive contains the expected files.
- Preserve before risky actions. Make a copy before changing computers, reinstalling a game, enabling mods, or accepting a cloud conflict.
- Understand the game’s storage model. Find out whether the title uses a separate backup folder, multiple slots, or a developer-controlled save location.
An external drive is a destination, not a time machine. It cannot recover a file after every copy has been securely deleted or overwritten. Its value comes from creating and preserving a known-good copy before something goes wrong.
The practical decision path
- Freeze the situation: stop playing and prevent avoidable synchronization.
- Preserve evidence: duplicate the local save directory and note timestamps.
- Check the platform: inspect Steam Cloud or the console’s cloud/USB saved-data manager for a pre-loss version.
- Check other devices: inspect an older computer or removable backup that may not have synchronized.
- Check the title: look for a documented backup slot or separate backup folder, using the game’s exact instructions.
- Restore cautiously: replace files only after preserving the originals and, where relevant, disabling synchronization during the replacement.
- Verify the rules: decide whether continuing from the restored file is acceptable for the game mode, achievements, and any community challenge.
- Accept the limit: if every local, cloud, game-specific, operating-system, and external copy contains the deletion or overwrite, recovery is not available through ordinary support channels.
The decisive question is not whether the save was deleted; it is whether an earlier, valid copy still exists somewhere that has not been overwritten.
