You can redeem only the gift-card rewards and point costs currently shown on your signed-in Rewards page. If you need a particular balance amount, buying a gift card is a separate option: choose from the purchase amounts Microsoft makes available, then redeem the code for its full value.
How to redeem Microsoft Rewards points for an Xbox gift card
- Sign in to the Microsoft account connected to your Rewards membership.
- Open the Microsoft Rewards redemption page and review the available gift-card rewards and their displayed point costs.
- Select an Xbox or Microsoft gift-card reward that is listed for your account, review its details, and choose the redeem button to complete the redemption.
The available catalog is specific to your account and region. Microsoft says eligible rewards appear when you have enough points, and gift cards may not always be available. Check the signed-in page for the current offers rather than relying on a denomination or point cost shown elsewhere.

What to do if you need a specific balance amount
Microsoft separately lets customers add money by purchasing an Xbox or Microsoft gift card in one of the amounts available in the Store. This is a purchase, not a custom-value Microsoft Rewards redemption. After you receive a code, follow Microsoft’s gift-card redemption instructions; the full value associated with the code is added to the Microsoft account you redeem it on.
To compare the two routes: Rewards uses points and is limited to offers displayed in your Rewards catalog; buying a gift card uses money and is limited to the purchase amounts offered in the Store. Neither route guarantees that every possible amount is available in every region.

Know how Rewards gift-card credit works
Microsoft says Xbox and Microsoft gift cards redeemed with Rewards points are deposited directly into the Microsoft account as promotional balance. Promotional balance may expire under the terms of the promotion, so check the applicable terms and your account details. Microsoft’s gift-card terms also say balances are not transferable to another person or Microsoft account. See Microsoft Rewards details and Microsoft gift-card terms and conditions.
Why a redemption may fail or a gift card may be missing
- Region mismatch: Make sure you are using the Microsoft account’s current market. Rewards availability varies by country or region.
- VPN or proxy: Microsoft lists VPN or proxy use as a possible redemption problem. Try again without one.
- Phone verification: Use a mobile or landline number if verification is required; Microsoft lists VoIP numbers, incorrect codes, and phone-number usage limits among possible issues.
- Repeated verification failures: Microsoft says multiple unsuccessful phone-verification attempts may require waiting 48 hours before trying again.
- Temporarily unavailable reward: Microsoft Support does not provide dates for when a gift card will be restocked or removed. Check the redemption page again for current availability.

How many Rewards points is a gift card worth?
Microsoft gives a general estimate that it usually takes about 5,000 points to redeem something worth $5. That is not a guaranteed exchange rate for an Xbox gift card: the point cost shown for a particular reward can depend on the offers available to your account, and Microsoft says limits and terms vary by country or region.
